If it is turning on after taping the device means it's due to battery loose connection.. if it turns on after pressing switch multiple time means it has push switch problem so you can replace switch

Connect the battery of 3.7v externally if the same type of battery is not available

Battery working voltage is 3.7V and yes you can operate it on USB connection directly without battery

I have a question. If I have 2 of them. Can I just unsolder bothe batteries and run a positive and negative wires. A set from each unit joined together in my car and with they operate fine when their is power going to them when the car is started. I just want to make sure before I try this please.

Yes you can do that but voltage supply should be same as that of batter or C type charge ie 5V

I have one faulty unit: only the first four leds turn on the rest is off, all leds are under 4v I cheked one on one and even the Din and Dout pins are all connected in cascade (I thought if one data pin was disconnected the next led wont display anything). What else I can check?

Try to test each led with a multimeter.
