The reason for adding a resistor isn't for what you mentioned it's for, it reduces the power going through it..... it "resists" , it does however stop (technically it heavily reduces) reflection(s) which will give an overall cleaner signal across the length of your strip and reduces the chance of weird behavior .
@kraddoomsters
@kraddoomsters Жыл бұрын
I don't understand why a resistor is used in a long run like this, cause it limits the power. To me it would make more sense to use it in the shorter runs
@initialb123
@initialb123 Жыл бұрын
@@kraddoomsters Outside my area of expertise however I believe the longer the run is a factor, as you put a 400kHz signal down meters of cable as it runs the entire length the reflections now nano seconds delayed come back and could cause interference to the source, I would imagine with a tiny cable run any reflection is near instantaneous so as not to be a factor?

Great presentation without any of the fluff that so many add in. I appreciate you sharing the corner detail manufacturer to help simplify a clean installation. Using a level is an option but since many homes aren't as square, true and plumb for that type of installation, I suggest just measuring up or down from the nearby parallel feature to maintain an appealing aesthetic look. I wouldn't use a level unless the LED strip is over a foot away from everything else.

Hi Chris, I'm a big fan of your channel... Thanks for all the great videos. I have a few questions, and hoping you can help me. I have two tray ceilings that I am looking to light with LED strips. The LED's themselves will not be directly visible as they are hidden by the lip or ledge of the trey ceiling. Each tray ceiling is square/rectangular and about 53ft (or 16m) in total length. Here are my questions... 1) Do you think the Govee M1 or LIFX Lightstrip is a better option in this application. LIFX is about double the cost, but if there is a noticable improvement in quality, I'm open to it. My original plan was to use two Govee M1 kits and six 40 inch extension kits per ceiling and just sync/group them together in the app (2 kits + 3 extensions per kit in each ceiling). 2) Would a DIY option work best? If so, what would you recommend? I was originally considering the BTF Lighting FCOB WS2814 RGBWIC LED Strip DC24V 784LED/m 70IC. I could get a 24v 20A power supply and inject from both ends (with the same power supply). What controller would I need for this application to use WLED? BTF recommends BanlanX, but WLED looks better. 3) Since these lights are to be installed in a tray ceiling, do I need a diffuser channel, or will the tray ceiling itself act as the diffuser? I really appreciate your help with the above. If you have a Patreon or some way to donate to your channel, I'd be happy to do so... Thanks in advance 🙂

So I finally created my dream space that I’ve always wanted to create, and the last thing I need to install is some beautiful LEDs… I obviously came across your page as well as this video and I’ll be honest, I’m completely blown away at the theatrics, your LEDs of choice, create. I do have one issue, I don’t really speak this “technical language“ so your additions to your LEDs kind of stumped me a bit… It’s great that you provide the links to all the products you’ve purchased however, it kills me that I don’t necessarily know what I’m actually purchasing lol I would hate to buy something foreign just wanted to come to my doorstep and be intimidated by it. Lol, I would literally have to follow this video down to the smallest detail if everything here is what I need for my LED to mimic what yours are doing… For someone who isn’t as technologically savvy, I would love to know your best solution to something I could potentially buy off the shelf or online that would have this same effect lol I could just plug-in after installation😅 (wishful thinking) if there is something on the market that provides these types of theatrics for LEDs. I will happily place my purchase, no matter the price, but if there isn’t, I will proceed with what I need to obtain in this video… Thanks again for the inspiration I am pretty excited at the fact that I didn’t settle for the typical LEDs, that all these teenagers get for their rooms Without the diffusers, which just looks so tacky,… this will look absolutely perfect in my room anyways I would love to hear back from you🙏

Maybe it helps someone else. I believe the LEDs use 60ma if they are white (Red, green and blue) on 100%. So you would need to x(amount of leds) * 60ma. For a 144leds/m strip that would be 8,64A

My experience is that with 5m and full brightness, the end of the 5m strip reaches about 2.5V. I am not worried about connecting 2 power injectors against eachother provided they are "identical" (i.e. the same voltage up until a certain resolution). The resistance of the wire is so big it doesn't really become a problem unless one of the two is broken. If one end is 5V and the other is 5.01V, the difference is 10mV. Connecting them both would result in maybe 5mW loss. I use 20V dc wiring with 1.5mm^2 cable and have any-to-5V DC-DC converters limited to 4A, and the string should be capable of eating at least 18A. At the end of that DC wiring, the drop of the 20V rails is bigger than the drop of a strip. So always go from "high voltage" for distribution and DC-DC that to spec. For 12+V strips this is of course not necessary. Everything depends also on the spec of the strip itself. But my experience is (8 year old strips): if you want to use it as lighting instead of a gimmick, you need power injection, or better: you just need higher voltages, which they didn't have a that time.

I feel like i get confused on the power supply part. Ive been playing with strips and the esp boards. But it seems like i dont understand how much say a 96led/m needs in order to be powered. Say its a 12v strip or a 5v strip. How do i calculate the amps and watts i would end up needing?

I really like the continuous plastic. Sadly, they say it won’t fit their V-shaped channels. Your paper hack might do the trick though. I’m looking at running something like what you’ve done here around my entire living room, as primary lighting. I need bright overhead, and don’t want to put it cans. I’d like to use the cool effects on occasion. The room is 21x13, so like 68 feet of continuous LED strips, full power. Is that something that can be done and have all of it synch up so one controller can make all of it “work as one strip”. I understand power injection will be needed. Thanks Chris, your kung fu is strong!

How long can you make it? Is there a guide for how often you have to inject power? And is there a limit on how far the data signal will get relayed? I have 122 feet I want to cover with one continuous strip around the room. I have no problem injecting power a few times.

My basement is currently unfinished and i want to finish it in the next yr or so. I wamt the Baseboards LED, all of it, its about 1400 sq ft and id say it would be at least 150ft of LED’s how do you best recommend going about that?. I was thinking maybe wiring to every 30ft or so as i want it 1 seemless strip vs multiple strips doing the same effect

I'm wondering if we can control the power outage behavior? E.g. when the power goes off and then on again, most LED strips immediately turns on. Some remember last settings (color and brightness), some don't. What I'm trying to understand here is if there is some setting to tell what the power outage recovery behavior should be. Phillips HUE have such. E.g. If the LED strip was off when power outage happened, I'd like it to be off when the power recovers. Do you think that's possible?

Hi Chris, I followed your set up. Nonetheless when I connect the second LED strip SK 6812 it doesn’t light up. The head voltage is 5.1V at the end of the first LED strip it drops to 4.8. The first strip works just fine but the second does not fire up. Connecting the second strip by its own (as it would be one only strip) it works fine so that I dismiss any factory failures. I would appreciate your help on this ine please. Thank you

I would like to do around the perimeter of my house. Can anyone tell me if there is a limit to the number of lights, light strips that can be connected together so they can be controlled in this fashion.also since each light is addressable, are ertain controllers better than others as far as to the number of light that can be controlled? Thank you

Chris I need your help -- I've soldered together 4 continuous strips of WS2815s (60leds/m) and am controlling them with the same plug-n-play controller you show in one of your videos, compatible w/ 5, 12, & 24v. This is the sound react version. While soldering I made sure each strip still worked and increased the length in WLED accordingly, but past 900 they randomly flash colors and don't respond, while the first 900 respond to whatever I tell them to. Is this a power issue, or can I not control all 1200 leds with one controller? Do I need to buy another to add to the other end? I don't know how you're controller all 50ft with one controller :(

I have a long corridor, I always want to put a led strip in that area. A more natural place to put is at the ankle height since it’s a corridor(walk way), as a comparison I would put at ceiling if it’s a living room. The issue is that along the corridor, there are several bedroom doors which will break the light strip line. Now, the only alternative I can think is to put at the ceiling but it kind of violating the purpose of it being a walk way. Any alternative ideas? Thanks.

Still don't understand how to figure out the exact power requirements for any given project. What's the formula to figure out what you need exactly? The ESP32 is a 5V controller, so I'd assume you always have to use a 5V power box if you want to connect the ESP32 directly to it.
