⏩ Video Question: How long have you known about this band?!?! What a gem For live content catch me on Twitch. www.twitch.tv/drumrolltony

I've been listening to Chon for about 2 years. Glad you took the suggestion and a shot at this one (think I mentioned it a few months back)! Excited to see the video in the next few days. Polyphia actually has a collab with the two guitarists from Chon, Mario Camarena and Erick Hansel, on the song Yas. Clay has a pretty cool style video production side of that video for the drums.

Chon is literally the first math rock band i've known, back in 2014 i think, they were the best of the genre (not saying they're bad now, but in terms of innovation, Polyphia has grown much more)

I found Chon about a year ago through their song "Bubble" which is fantastic. If you haven't heard his work before I highly recommend checking out Angel Vivaldi. his Away With Words album is incredible as well his Universal Language album. All instrumental works that inspired me to buy my first guitar some years ago. Ironically I'll never be able to play any of his masterpieces.

Hella excited you’re checking out Chon. They definitely became my favorite band immediately when I first heard their stuff. Some suggestions I have are Story, Continue?, Ghost, Perfect Pillow, No Signal, and Thanks. I know it’s a lot of suggestions, but that doesn’t even scratch the surface of all their amazing songs. I would recommend more, but these are my personal favorites along with Splash.

Love CHON! They're who got me really into the mathier, jazzier, more progressive side of instrumental metal-influenced music, like Plini, AaL, Scale the Summit, and Covet and shit like that. Super tight outfit. Their latest LP is fantastic. Not a single track worth skipping over. Keep em coming dude! Love these reactions.

Best thing about Chon is they're all into Death Metal. The guitarist Eric sometimes wears a Necrophagist T-shirt. They also done the guitar parts for Alex Rudingers cover of Necrophagist - Stabwound. The bass player here left, but the drummer and guitarist (Mario)'s brother Esiah has joined making it 3 bros and Eric. Excellent musicians! EDIT: They also gave away the guitar they painted in the video.
@chrismcconkey85792 жыл бұрын
Necrophagist is considered their earliest influence from when they started.
@RustyGonzo2 жыл бұрын
Oh hey, great comment! Never knew that about the painted guitar - very neat. I recommended an Alex Rudinger video to Tony a couple weeks back (his Xenochrist vid). Guy's an absolute technician on the kit. And Necrophagist are phenomenal and imo changed the entire course of tech death.

you should do pitch dark! my absolute favourite tune by these guys, some cool rhythmic stuff happening in the main idea that makes you feel a modulation but drops you back in on the downbeat

when i found out about them around 2015 its all i would listen to. I saw them live in 2016 and Polyphia was one of the bands that opened for them. At the time i only knew one Polyphia song so i didnt really get to enjoy them as much as if i were to see them today.

Toe has an amazing drummer that rivals Clay in terms of innovation. I'd check out their first album (メトロノーム [metronome] is absolutely mental drumming but 孤独の発明 [Kodoku no hatsumei] is probably their most well-known track album). Goodbye (グッドバイ) or long tomorrow are the most craziest and most intricate songs though so don't sleep on those (by far and away my favorite especially cuz the Goodbye music video really captures the wild nature of their drummer)
@Imadumbdoodoohead Жыл бұрын
Honestly, that's just the norm for Japanese Jazz/Math Rock drummers. Special OTHERS, a picture of her, Mouse on the Keys, Jizue, etc. If Toe is all you know you should look into other Japanese bands, as toe is a nice introduction, but there's many that rival and surpass both of them.

If you liked this then I highly recommend checking out the Meinl Cymbals Live recording of Nathan Camarena (the drummer). He did two songs: "Sleepy Tea" and "Perfect Pillow". The rhythmic modulation these guys pull off is so sick. Especially if you have a drumline background like we do.

Matt Garska has a feature on this album, and you can tell their drummer learned a lot from him. He's the youngest member of the band, pretty sure he was 13 when they started and like 20-21 for this album. He's a young prodigy for sure

Seeing what you like, you should definitely check out Charlie Robbins or The Omnific (or both). Let's say Nostalgia for Charlie Robbins and Ne Plus Ultra for The Omnific.
