I enjoy watching technique. The drummers that are technically precise without throwing in tons of flash in there enable me marvel more easily at what they are able to do. How they are able to co-ordinate to use all four limbs while I struggle to co-ordinate just my arms and hands when playing on the guitar. You should give the Korean drummer A-Yeon a listen, especially her recent cover of Dream Theatre's "Pull me Under". She does covers of Metallica, Avenge Sevenfold, Slayer, Bullet for my valentine, etc. as well. There are those who dismiss her because she uses her looks to grab people's attention, but I think her skills on the drums are the real deal and would love to hear your opinion. She uses a top end Roland kit most of the time now, but also uses a traditional drum set featuring Pearl drums and Paiste Symbols.

NO sampling, NO triggering, and I believe no quantizing. Just sheer skill. As a drummer, it always impresses me when other drummers can do like 8/16th note sustained double kicks and then mid beat increase the tempo and then drop it again. Takes so much control.

A few words about Nightwish (Floor Jansen), Dimash and anither cool vocalists! Alan Dean Foster, the famous American fantasy and science fiction writer who applied his writing talent to such hits as Star Wars and Star Trek, maintains a music section on his blog. "There are many good singers, fewer great singers, and a very small number who are unique singers. Diana is a natural dramatic contralto. This is the lowest range for a female singer. She is also polyphonic. Roughly, this means that when she sings she often sounds like more than one person singing at once. As you can imagine, the combination is extraordinary. So too is her full range. Singers at age 14 can do things that astonish us. Witness the careers of Jordan and the Dutch prodigy Amira Willighagen. But even when included in this company there is something special about Diana. I love the performances of the two singers I just mentioned, but they are (perfectly) controlled and measured. Diana is more akin to a force of nature. One of the most common descriptions of her performances is “shamanistic.” Some of this has to do with the remarkable timbre of her voice, some with the sheer intensity of her performing. In this she is closer to Floor Jansen. With both women you can see as well as hear the intensity, the emotion, contained with both the lyrics and the music. A duet between the two would be something magical." I also recommend checking out the top vocalist, the most unique and incredibly talented Diana Ankudinova.

Alan Foster writes at the end of his article about Diana:. "Her first two-minute performance on the show (all the initial performances are brief) is of a very dark version of Elvis Presley’s “Can’tHelp Falling in Love.” I’m not sure what you anticipate hearing, but I guarantee it won’t be anything like what you expect. The show’s production values are also outstanding. Two things I noticed immediately when comparing this performance to Diana’s previous ones: first, her control shows the results of ayear’s worth of professional voice training, and second, as she matures her power is becoming fully unleashed. When someone says she blows you away, it carries a literal meaning. " Alan's full article about Diana Ankudinova is posted in my Community section. Best choice from Diana's channel: Can’t Help Falling in Love 4.5 million views 144k likes - total 777 reactions to this performance by Diana. (all added to my playlist)

Too bad that video has a bunch of shitty camera movement so you can't coherently see what's happening for most of the song, and it also switches every half second. Would have been better if it was just 2 or 3 angles on mounts that switched at appropriate times. The videos for his solo project like this one are a lot better, though still not perfect if you actually care about watching what he's doing.

This was AWESOME!! So the next criminal move would be to NOT watch Luke Holland doing the "Tendinitis" drum playthrough!! Maybe even the actual video with Jason Richardson. Also you need to get to Thomas Hakke "Clockworks" playthrough as well. Luke is a youtube drummer that has played with many and Thomas is the drummer from Meshuggah. You NEED to do both of these.

Solid reaction as per always, man! Chris Turner is wild to watch. I don't know why, but the unique way he positions himself at his kit and how he sits with his tippy toes hanging down onto the pedals makes him look like he's gonna tip over if he slaps a crash too hard and it cracks me up. I would be super interested in seeing you react to Alex Rudinger's playthrough of The Faceless - XenoChrist. I feel like there's a lot there you'd really dig. Keep em coming!

Fun fact for you; all these music videos he's posting are one take playthroughs. There's zero samples, triggers, quantising or snapping to grid. His whole thing is playing 100% natty with mics, and he's so good at it that people think he has to have it with any of those artificial elements or cleaned up in post but it never is. Also if you want to see a video with another monster drummer, check out his song Triggered where he plays WITH Thomas Lang independently through the track with their own parts and partial overlays of each other.

Hello there. Just discovered your Junna and AOT videos. Awesome. I didn't find anything on Wagakki band though. Highly recommend it if you never heard them before. They're mixing traditional Japanese instruments with modern western ones. Check out songs Homura, Senbonzakura and basically anything by them. You won't be disappointed. That is, of course, if you haven't heard them.

Since you are into percussion a lot - I wonder how you would react to music from Heilung (band from Denmark, with 3 main members from Norway, Germany and Denmark). I'll put links in a reply to this comment. All live performances at LIFA - live but good production like you also noticed from the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. For percussion I recommend: Krigsgaldr. For awesome vocals: In Maidjan. For a push to work out or just get going: Alfadhirhaiti. From Heilungs own KZbin page: "Heilung is sounds from the northern european iron age and viking period. We used everything from running water, human bones, reconstructed swords and shields up to ancient frame drums and bronze rings in the songs. The lyrics contain original texts from rune stones and preserved spear shafts, amulets and other artifacts. Furthermore poems, which either deal with historical events or are translations/ interpretations of the originals. Every attempt to link the music to modern political or religious points are pointless, since Heilung tries to connect the listener to the time before Christianity and its political offsprings raped and burned itself into the northern european mentality. Heilung means healing in german and describes the core of the sound. It is supposed to leave the listener eased and relaxed after a sometimes turbulent musical journey."

Oooof Chris wouldn’t appreciate the sampling or trigger question. Someone below mentioned the duo with Thomas lang. there’s a interview too about how they managed that. Took them about a year to make and Chris will scrap the recording until he hits that perfect one take. He is also the songwriter for the band oceans ate Alaska. Recommend the song hikari. He does a play through for that too.

Interesting take. Musicians generally enjoy legitimate questions when someone is trying to learn about something new. This is a first time listen of a song from an artist that I have never encountered before. How could my question possibly have any negative attachment. It was an interesting sound in the section I pointed out. 🤷‍♂️
