There's passive listening and active listening. I've played music all throughout my house for years and my gf always tells me to change it when "hard rock" 🙄 comes on my playlist. Took her to a tool show and in the middle of EVERY song she'd turn to me and shout "OMG THESE GUYS ARE SO GOOD!" With an unspoken tone of, "like why haven't you plaid them at home before". 🤦🏼‍♂️

well. years and years of training. we all have the potential for great things but it takes dedication and time. on a pro level these people spend 8 hours+ a day on practice. do this for a few decades and you get someone like danny who at age 60 seems like at the peak of his profession. he's as great as ever and no sign of loosing his abilities. i mean look at him. he's friggin buff. and the polyrhythmic stuff... it just shows we he rightfully earned the nickname octopus.

Favourite Tool song would have to be Lateralus. Just an all round performance from every member of the band. A masterclass in build up and payoff for a prog rock song. Yeah Maynard may think it's trivial, and people may meme on the composition. But I will always appreciate it for how thoughtful everything was put together in this track - and the whole album really.

@DrumRollTonyReacts
@DrumRollTonyReacts Жыл бұрын
The time signature would flow in a grouping sense more focused on the 8th note instead of the qtr. Most likely split splitting up what is divisional by 2 and then odd parts separately. Meaning, we wouldn't count to 33. We feel the patterns 3,3,2 for 7/8 3,2 for 5/8 etc and so on following how the grouping goes. Amazing song and such a cool use of structure

As a non-drummer this has always stood out to me as a masterclass in drumming - the timing, technique, and power, and most importantly the tastefulness of it all. I'm usually unimpressed by fancy tippy-tappy drumming, favouring instead power and conviction, but this is a huge exception. I'm also not a fan of Tool, but this whole song, including the lyrics, is amazing.

Now that we are losing so many of the old school great drummers especially progressive ones like Peart and Moon, I see myself on the lookout for the next guys up. There are a lot of great drummers out there on KZbin and on tour, but that next level guy is still rare. Two at the top of my list are Danny (Tool, obviously), and Vlad with Jinjer. They've continued to show me more and more how precise they are and how effortless they handle odd meters. Danny is like an octopus with his limb independence, and Vlad has so much precision, speed, and groove. That also both have interesting setups that could teach us all a little about ergonomics.

I could be wrong, but my read on the setup for his ride cymbal is maintaining stick angle. If you notice the cymbals he wants to hit the edge of are mounted standard, but cymbals he wants to hit the face of are angled. In my opinion this gives him the option to get really quick transitions from hitting the face of the ride to the edges of the crashes around it because he doesn't have to move his wrist at all.

You should take a look at the soundtrack for an anime named "Katanagatari", the whole soundtrack is worth a listen but the theme "Bahasa Palsu" especially seems like something you'd enjoy reacting to. It's composed by Iwasaki Tawu, same person who composed the soundtracks for Gurren Lagann, Soul Eater and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency. It also features vocals/rap by Lotus Juice which also featured predominantly in the Persona 3 soundtrack and in Battle Tendency's soundtrack as well. Some other tracks that stand out are Bahasu Palsu Jazz 'n Mix(Remix of the first theme), 月刀歌 (Gettouka) and Hanetsuki Imouto
