The absolute master of polymetric, unique time signatures. It never gets old watching drummers try to figure out his time signatures and giving up. The complete heir to Neil Peart and it's easy to see his influence. This song is a complete showcase for him, and deservedly so. What might be more amazing is the fact that Danny is 58 yrs. old when this was recorded. Tool is simply an experience. Danny is simply one of the best drummers alive today.

actually he was crossing to his other platform. On their recent tour he had two platforms, one on each side of Danny, and he would go back and forth at different points during the show. So you'd see him on one then disappear and reappear on the other side of the stage. It was a cool setup.

Most tool songs have Justin and Adam doing their own things and Danny tying it all together with multiple different time signatures going. One with each hand and foot at times. That's why his nickname is the octopus.
That "guy walkin' back there" is the lead singer of Tool, Maynard James Keenan, doing his usual "I'mma do the whole concert from the back of the stage" routine. Edit: Also, 33/16. Count 5+3+3+3+5+3+3+3+5
@glacieractivity4 жыл бұрын
I get the same result but for me, it feels more natural to solve it polymetrically as 5/8 + 11/8 + 12/8 + 5/8 (it is especially the 12 - 13 transition that makes wobbly heads) for the verse. And yes - we both smile to each other at 33. And it makes sense that we solve it differently because the different band members have a tendency to put their accents at different places. So it can end up feeling even more rhythmically deep - even before they break out into polyrhythmic on top of the poly-metrics (as in the middle theme). The important thing is though - how smooth and groovy they play odd-number bonanza. It is there, making headbangers confused, but when we lean back and lets it wash over us it is so damned fluid and meaty. The sequences are not flashy - they feel integral to what at least I listen to. And in this case, I feel that almost the entire song is creating tension. Only a couple of times do they release the tension. (my personal theory, this is why FI-album got mixed reviews for being introvert or navel-gazing as first listening. They are building these long phases of tension - and they give a big F in people's desire for a quick tension-release. I enjoy the way they hold and builds these statics - insisting us to be there and listen. Excellent stuff).

You're very knowledgeable. I love the the little video inserts and the facts you put up. I never knew the facts on screen. This guy is the best drummer ever!

People are saying 33/16, but it wouldn't make sense to have a 45-50 bpm tempo. It's much simpler if you say 33/8 @ 100 bpm. I think the easiest way to count it is to think of the first bass note as a pickup note, then count 7 twice (half time), then 5 double time. So 14 + 14 + 5 = 33.

I've seen this performance before but it was fun to watch your reaction for sure. Seemed genuine and EXACTLY how I felt when I was watching and actually experiencing these incredible and technically bad-ass approches to each performers parts. It all comes together perfectly in this performance, simply amazing. Anyhow, earned my sub on this one @Music Shed. As a guitarist myself on my weekly livestreams I strive for perfection every time and understand how much personal effort it takes to get to new heights. Looking forward to more content.

That math seems to add up. I think I will use that when someone asks what is Tool. I'll say imagine those three bands put together.

That guy you saw walkin in the back was Maynard the lead vocalist. He goes back and forth from these elevated darkened platforms on either side of Carey. I got to see them last February the day before everything shut down, it was amazing.

Wow, Technique will set you free !! So true!! I love how Daney Carey uses a more conventional Rock grip with his sticks ,but I would still love to learn the Jazz technique . I would also love some of those nice double kick pedals as well 8)
