The guy is a power drummer, and the fact that he plays this song during every concert for the fear inoculum album and does it the exact same way every night speaks volumes about how incredible he is as a drummer. Tool would never be the same band with a different drummer, singer basis and guitar player we struck gold when these people found each other and created this band !!!!

AND HE WAS 58 WHEN HE DID THIS! And can we talk about the polyrhythms? That other sound is the guitar, yes sir. The guy in back is Maynard, making it about the music, not him. A shocking thing for a lead singer. He was getting out of the way for the wall of sound that the band ushered in for feeding.

The absolute master of polymetric, unique time signatures. It never gets old watching drummers try to figure out his time signatures and giving up. The complete heir to Neil Peart and it's easy to see his influence. This song is a complete showcase for him, and deservedly so. What might be more amazing is the fact that Danny is 58 yrs. old when this was recorded. Tool is simply an experience. Danny is simply one of the best drummers alive today.

I mean, they're easy to figure out, it just takes actual time and attention to hear them. This song has its verses in 33/16. The chorus is in 4/4. The bridge section is a 3 over 4 polyrhythm between Danny and the rest of the band.

A comment somewhere said he drank like two cases of water during a concert and never took a piss. He's probably eating 8 to 10k calories on a concert day. The Rock eats 10k a day to maintain his physique, so drummers are probably in that range during tours.

actually he was crossing to his other platform. On their recent tour he had two platforms, one on each side of Danny, and he would go back and forth at different points during the show. So you'd see him on one then disappear and reappear on the other side of the stage. It was a cool setup.

I get the same result but for me, it feels more natural to solve it polymetrically as 5/8 + 11/8 + 12/8 + 5/8 (it is especially the 12 - 13 transition that makes wobbly heads) for the verse. And yes - we both smile to each other at 33. And it makes sense that we solve it differently because the different band members have a tendency to put their accents at different places. So it can end up feeling even more rhythmically deep - even before they break out into polyrhythmic on top of the poly-metrics (as in the middle theme). The important thing is though - how smooth and groovy they play odd-number bonanza. It is there, making headbangers confused, but when we lean back and lets it wash over us it is so damned fluid and meaty. The sequences are not flashy - they feel integral to what at least I listen to. And in this case, I feel that almost the entire song is creating tension. Only a couple of times do they release the tension. (my personal theory, this is why FI-album got mixed reviews for being introvert or navel-gazing as first listening. They are building these long phases of tension - and they give a big F in people's desire for a quick tension-release. I enjoy the way they hold and builds these statics - insisting us to be there and listen. Excellent stuff).

My first visit to channel young man. Danny in the first few sections is just loosing up and getting the old blood flowing. He save the ass kicking for later! Danny just had a birthday. He has been drumming for around 50 years! I contend that Danny Carey is a one man drum line.... I left a comment at another video saying Danny is a robot!! You will have to decide for yourself. My favorite part is coming.... Watch for when the overhead light start to flash. And he explodes! At 11:45! Thank you sir!!!!................ I think you loved this as much as we did!!!

One of the best pieces of musical advice I ever got came from a one-on-one master class with Daron Hagen back when I was in music school. He said: "Totally inspired composing and performing is the best. It's what we all want all the time. But of course it doesn't work like that; inspiration comes and goes. So our job -- the real 'job' of being a musician -- is to get SO GOOD at our craft that no one can tell the difference between inspiration and technique."

Doesn’t matter what kind of music your into, you cannot listen/watch Danny rock around this sound and not have your mind blown 🤯 the patterns and rhythms guitar, bass, drums, and even vocals are forming weaving in and out of are like no other kind of music!! Love love love the drum cam Vic Firth so thank you for sponsoring this effort. I’ve been watching reaction videos around Pneuma and Danny Carey for days and EVERYONE views it like I do!! Danny, you are the drum 🥁 👑!!!! ✊✌️

People are saying 33/16, but it wouldn't make sense to have a 45-50 bpm tempo. It's much simpler if you say 33/8 @ 100 bpm. I think the easiest way to count it is to think of the first bass note as a pickup note, then count 7 twice (half time), then 5 double time. So 14 + 14 + 5 = 33.

I've seen this performance before but it was fun to watch your reaction for sure. Seemed genuine and EXACTLY how I felt when I was watching and actually experiencing these incredible and technically bad-ass approches to each performers parts. It all comes together perfectly in this performance, simply amazing. Anyhow, earned my sub on this one @Music Shed. As a guitarist myself on my weekly livestreams I strive for perfection every time and understand how much personal effort it takes to get to new heights. Looking forward to more content.
