Fun fact: Lyn, the singer, doesn't speak a word of English. That's why some of her pronunciation and annunciation seems a bit off. She was getting coached both on how to literally sing the lyrics, as well as how to perform them in terms of emotional delivery and emphasis. Her performance only becomes even more impressive knowing that!

The only Japanese singers I know to speak English well are Hikaru Utada and Rie Fu (singer of the first Bleach ending, Life is like a Boat). From what I have heard, at least one of those two lived abroad for a time. ETA: For clarification, I believe this is more to do with the timeline in which we develop our accents (iirc it's 8-10 years) and Japan's culture of refraining from doing things that they do not consider themselves good at in public if they do not have to do so. As a personal example, I have a blended accent due to international moves in the years prior to the accent developmental deadline. After this, it becomes very difficult to accurately produce sounds that do not exist in our native language.

You mentioned the lack of resolve at the end. It's because this isn't a stand alone track in the game but actually a combat theme for a late game boss. It doesn't resolve because it doesn't actually end, it's written to seamlessly loop to the beginning of the track. It would be jarring to the gameplay if the song just restarted, so they make it seamless in order to keep the flow of gameplay from being disrupted by the song. This song also has the video game trope of "Oh no, there's lyrics!" You know it's gonna be a major boss fight when vocals come in. This song actually plays instrumental only when it first appears in game, then when the boss fight ramps up to a higher stage the lyrics kick in to further drive the energy. It's a very common trope in games these days, but it's also a very effective way for the music to help sync with the particular strengths of gaming as an interactive medium.

So, a little context for when this song plays: It's during a boss fight that has incredibly deep meaning for the main character. When the fight starts, you don't have every piece of the song. Some instruments and vocals are missing, and as you progress through the fight, you steadily gain them. The song is about surmounting the insurmountable, doing the seemingly impossible...such as creating rivers in the desert. It is reflected in the fight; your mettle is tested, and you have to apply all of the knowledge that 30+ hours of gameplay has given you in order to overcome this obstacle. It is not easy, you're fighting for every inch, and when the deed is done, and you emerge victorious -- that's when it hits you. That wasn't his boss music. It was yours. This piece is honestly a work of art that speaks to the narrative of the game, and your little group's motivations; framing what you are really trying to accomplish here. It's phenomenal, and I have endless praise for it.

To add to this, the first song he listened to (Last Surprise) is for the average every day combat. Life Will Change is for the normal bosses. This song, Rivers in the Dessert, is for the truly dangerous final bosses. The songs almost sort of escalate with the game. Another note is that you first head Rivers in the Dessert WITHOUT lyrics. You have to get about halfway through the boss fight before the lyrics kick in.

BRUH. "Why do I hear Boss Music?" Meme taken to it's logical conclusion, and it's awesome. I never thought about that! It even kind of tracks with the final time you hear that Awakening+Will Power wombo combo - it's not about you at all, just an objective fact of the universe.
@FinalStar123

@@sharlesdaviskendy2391 Very good summary but a small correction is that life will change is the approach to your objective in the game which is the treasure whilst blooming villains is your standard boss fight music. Keeper of Lust in addition to this is your average mid boss music. Another point i want to add is that elements (leitmotif?) in both willpower and awakening can be heard in rivers in the desert which is a nod at the journey you made to reach that point

This track never fails to hype me up when they drop it in game. Persona is king when it comes to setting the mood with it's music, like the theme "Beneath the Mask" which plays when you explore the town at night. Bonus points if it's a rainy night. The anime, while poorly received, had some good original tracks as well, such as the opening theme "Dark Sun". Dark Sun goes pretty hard; would recommend. Same vocalist for each of the aforementioned tracks, of course. ... As for what the game is about.... It's Persona, so it's complicated. In P5, specifically, the protagonist is a teenager wrongly accused of a crime. He then discovers that he has the power to enter a parallel world, in which the human subconscious manifests. There is an over-world that is formed by a culturally shared subconscious. And people with particularly twisted hearts form their own "palaces", which are shaped around their desires and the way they view their position in the world. The protagonist, who is now a societal underdog, gathers like-minded people to assault these palaces. Taking on the guise of thieves, the gang threatens to "steal the hearts" of wrong-doers. While that action is a physical deed within the cognitive realm, the result within reality is a "change of heart", where the person recognizes the error of their ways, and confesses to their crimes. The story really takes off when your gang of self-proclaimed "thieves" get the attention of mainstream media, the police, and corrupt political figures. There are a few twists and turns, and the side plots are fun slices of drama, but that basically summarizes the plot, without giving too much away.

In the most basic way to say what persona 5 is about is. It's about overcoming the evil and darkness that can take over peoples hearts and mind because of the effects life and society have on us. Finding confidants and people to trust in and to help you overcome your own darkness as well. This song specifically takes place during a very important boss fight that kinda sums a lot of the goals the Phantom Thieves (name of the hero group) are trying to achieve. The world has discounted so much and accepted life as it is, but they stand against it all Add some anime/JRPG story beats in and you have Persona

Glad you liked it! Basically, it's about being a high school student who lives two lives. In one, he has to behave as a normal student and live his every day life healthily and happily, and in the other he dons the title of a "phantom thief" with his other phantom thief friends. Their secret operation involves infiltrating the minds of people with distorted desires so to speak. They invade their minds, which take shape in a physical form. And what they need to do is steal the symbol of their distorted desires (hence the thief) which will cause that awful person to have a change of heart. They do this to get back at the horrible corrupt adults who do them harm.

One of my favorite tracks from this game! I'm so glad he is delving into video game music, I really hope he gets recommended Nier Automata music at some point and ends up listening to it, Persona 5 music is so good but it unfortunately lost out to one other game for Best Music of 2017 for gaming and that was Nier Automata! They use a dialect that is composed of a lot of the worlds languages that are mixed together to make a whole new language, yet the vocals are still able to convey every emotion it's trying to deliver with such accuracy even though the listener has no idea what the lyrics are saying. It'd be nice for a keen ear for music to listen and notice all the other intricacies in the music that a noob myself could never find or describe. A few songs in particular that would be awesome for a react; 1) Amusement Park 2) A Beautiful Song 3) City Ruins (Ray of Light) and/or City Ruins (Shade) [ Both Insanely Good ] 4) Birth of a Wish Honorable Mention, particularly since this one will be recommended a lot; - Weight of the World [ Song has a lot of versions, three noteworthy ones being English Version, Version by Marina Kawano, and lastly Nouveau FR Version ]

I love how knowledgeable you are about the entire composition!! This was one of the most epic themes while playing P5. It means so much more when you realize this isn't actually the bosses theme, it's actually the protagonists theme.

Hearing this when you enter to fight the Twins was epic. I know it appeared at the end of the game, but on your second playthrough, fighting the Twins, I was okay with getting my ass handed to me my first go through. The fight, the strategy, the music and animations. Seeing them use Personas from your compendium, even Max Arcana ones like Attis... everything about this song makes me geek out.

This soundtrack is really amazing, but hearing it on KZbin and experiencing it in the game are two COMPLETELY different experiences. In the videogame this soundtrack appears during all the major boss battles, but when you get to what at the time we are led to believe is the final boss battle-the soundtrack completely changes. The reason for this is because that supposed final boss battle actually has about 3-4 different stages, and the soundtrack does something during each of those stages that it didn’t do before in any of the other previous boss battles: it adds a new instrument when you defeat each of his stages until you get the complete version that you hear in this video. When the lyrics first popped up my jaw hit the floor and they perfectly capsulate the events unfolding during that boss battle.

Interesting observation. I've watched about a dozen of these "(Insert Professional) Reacts to Rivers In the Desert" videos, and it never ceases to amaze me that even some of the harshest critics have been outright baffled by the reason HOW this song works so well together. If you listen to the Persona 5 Royale OST (the updated version), you'll begin to realize that the game and the narrative are inextricably tied together with the music. The story is phenomenal, but the music coupled with the narrative genius pushes P5R into a tier of art that few games have been able to achieve. One interesting fact, Lyn Inaizumi has a vocal range that is less desirable in Japanese markets because she is a Mezzo-Saprano. This caused her to struggle to find gigs for a quite a while, but then she found her home. Her voice is perfectly suited for Jazz, Blues, and Soul, which is EXACTLY the feel and vibe that P5 (P5R) were trying to accomplish. Talk about destined by fate.

This song coming out (for the first time) in the epic showdown against the big bad guy really contributed to the epic feeling of the battle. My favorite thing about this soundtrack is how they built up to the most bombastic and impactful songs like this one and "Whims of Fate" instead of having this be like, THE "Boss Fight Theme" for every boss like I feel like many games would do. And to answer your question, Persona 5 is about a group of teenagers fighting against evil with the help of cool mystical powers granted by revealing their true selves (their 'personas'). The story is good but the S T Y L E is where the game truly shines.

The music from this game is incredible. but it's even better in game cause of how they work it into the fights and story. the music is strong on it's own very strong. but once you have the story and what's going on at the same time. IT's beyond magical. cause the music not only changes but is crafter to be part of the story and scene so seamlessly.

If you wanted to try more persona 5 music in a longer video, you could do a game where you get the main tracks for the palaces and screenshots from those palaces and try to match them. It might be about a 30 minute video, but I think it would be fun to see how well the compositions fit their settings to someone with limited context.

Shot in the dark: Do you mean Lavenza? I can only think of her that has RitD playing and that is new to Royal. And that means you basically completed the story twice already which, same hat, and good job. I still have to go for a 3rd round for a few achievements (harem route included), have 100%ed it yet?

@@clemente3966 No, not that boss! This is my first time playing through Royal, I've seen a Let's Play of the vanilla game. I'm not planning on taking her on, I've heard how tough she is!! 😂😂 I mean with Shido's battle and the battle with Kasumi's Persona that's corrupted by the councilor. I'm in the month of January and I just finished some of the infiltration in the last palace for Royal. I read about the true ending a bit so I followed the requirements for that!

@@spring_drain18 Oh, my bad, I didn't remember that the Cinderella fight had RitD. And yeah, you're not ready after 1 playthrough, that's why Lavenza is only available in NG+. And yeah, she's tough, but Royal lets you have the previous DLC Personas, and they can be busted. And the only still hard part is the crits phase. While I'm at it, a quick rundown of the fight to help you: -first phase, use at least one elemental super effective skill each turn. Easy to pass, as it's easy to read which element you need based on the last Persona she used. -second phase: at least one crit per turn, a hard phase. You might want to use Yusuke or Sumire there, since they have good crit stats and skills. -third phase: inflict at least one status ailment per turn. You can use items there, so you're relatively safe. Prefer sleep, as it has the biggest list of possible techincal elements for a One More. 4th phase: go ham, no restrictions. And make it quick, you only have 8 turns per phase. Personally, I simply used Izanagi-no-Ogami Picaro there because I needed some damage and after a 2nd playthrough, you still haven't got the teammates very far in terms of hp and sp with the jazz club.

@@clemente3966 Oh, thank you so much for your help!! 😃 If I ever decide to do NG+, I'll screenshot your advice for her fight! I've already been using 2 of the DLC Personas so far in my main playthrough, and they've been very useful so far. This is my first Persona game I've ever played, even though I've watched an LP of the vanilla P5. I'm planning on playing the digital versions of P3P and P4G on the Switch once I finish playing other games in my catalog. Tears of the Kingdom is coming out soon, so I'm trying to get other games out of the way before May 12th!

And yeah, I'm most probably gonna get Totk so I might have to keep some money for it, si no 3 or 4 even if I wanted. Also, maybe I switched the 2nd and 3rd phase, I'm not entirely sure. And maybe I forgot about one, but I'm more certain I'm right on the number than on the order.
