most of these songs (i'm almost sure that all of them) are included in the canonized songbook of the hungarian protestant churches (calvinist and lutheran). i grew up listening and singing them, and while i like mostly indie and psychedelic rock music, they remain to be my favorites when i'm in a sentimental mood.

Anglicans and some Lutherans held onto their beautiful music traditions. Lutherans in general (in the US at least) have not, preferring pop versions of hymns played on guitars, and power point slide presentations. Such a shame that music like this has been lost in worship, along with ancient vestments and practices, and that the emphasis on "Protestant" belies the fact that the reformed church was still "catholic".

I don't know if we specifically use this hymn within my church, but the Missouri Synod uses traditional music like this, although in English of course. That doesn't mean that the newer Christian rock is bad, either, but for actual church I prefer this. EDIT: we are definetely using these specific hymns, I recognize them from church. I didn't immediately because they are all in English.

Didn't both Luther and Calvin reject the organ and prefer acapella?
@earlymusicmidi
@earlymusicmidi 3 жыл бұрын
I think eventually Luther accepted that the pipe organ was a permanent fixture in church music. Many of his immediate followers were professional organists such as Wolfgang Figulus. The debate is complex. I suspect that what Luther advocated was to avoid combining human voices with organ accompaniment because he loved the purity of singing. Here is one article about this topic: www.researchgate.net/profile/Theo-Wyk/publication/336798899_Martin_Luther_and_the_pipe_organ_-_His_true_sentiments_affirmed/links/5db2b96592851c577ec260fb/Martin-Luther-and-the-pipe-organ-His-true-sentiments-affirmed.pdf?origin=publication_detail

@@earlymusicmidiOrgan and singing at the same time is something that would have been novel at the time of the Reformation.
@earlymusicmidi
@earlymusicmidi 4 ай бұрын
@@karlrovey Actually, it was not unheard of to combine choir with organ -- which may be the reason why Martin Luther criticized it. You can see a woodblock print I included in my video of Isaac's "Missa Wohlauff gsell" kzbin.info/www/bejne/mWqrl2loi6pko8U I suspect that Luther wanted his congregation to hear and understand every word that was being "spoken" by human voices and rejected the idea of its being obscured by the power of the church organ.
@karlrovey
@karlrovey 4 ай бұрын
@@earlymusicmidi I was under the impression that the general practice (if you had an organ) at the time for both Catholics and Lutherans was alternating between choir and organ (and congregation in the case of Lutherans).
@earlymusicmidi
@earlymusicmidi 4 ай бұрын
@@karlrovey That may be true. I don't know for sure. But the church organ has been a fixture of churches throughout Europe from the 14th Century onwards. It is hard (for me at least) to think that the medieval mind would not have imagined combining singing (esp. by a congregation) and organ playing at the same time for special occasions.🤔

I was always a bit amazed to find out that Martin Luther became anti semitic at the end of his life.
@johnhouchins3156

He was a mixed bag considering the Jews. He was not God, he was not a "S"aint. Like us, he was a sinner. He was right on the Gospel, and wrong on other things. Also, it's best not to judge anyone in a vacuum. Although wrong, ant-semitism was (and still is) partly representitive of the culture at the time.
@earlymusicmidi
@earlymusicmidi Жыл бұрын
Sadly modern anti-semitism has its roots in the late Middle Ages. Even Venice with all its enlightened thinkers organized its Jewish citizens into ghettos and created onerous laws for the residents therein by around 1516.
@AnnetteMurphyger
@AnnetteMurphyger Жыл бұрын
@@johnhouchins3156 thanks John that was so well put. It is so true Luther was not God and neither did he claum to be. It was so sad that many in the Church of the day were anti semitic and it is often said that Adolf Hitler was influenced by Luther.

Although I don’t, and can’t, know all of Luther’s thoughts and feelings on the Jewish people. I do know that the letter that Luther wrote called “The Jews and their lies”, was actually a response to a letter that a Jewish rabbi had recently written called “The Christians and their lies”. So I think that adds a bit of context to the sentiment that Luther was antisemitic specifically because of that letter. Another thing to keep in mind was that the horribly disgusting event that happened in the 20th century hadn’t happened yet. So it’s easy to look back and judge him from what we now know. I am not in any way saying that Luther was perfect because he definitely was not! I just think it’s interesting.
