Music from the Railway Series

I had booked some seats for us to ride on the Flying Scotsman down at the Watercress Line in Hampshire 29th Feb 2020 but we couldn’t go, so my son and grandson had the tickets …
They liked it so much they went back the following day and filmed this little sequence ….
I thought for a bit of fun I’d stick some music from the Railway Series composed for my last involvement which was Series VII in 2003 and which I believe was never transmitted as we had gone into dispute with HIT Entertainment and they elected to scrap all music and replace the completed Series music with a new composer…..
I’m not sure it has ever been heard, but as I say, a bit of fun

HIT own the copyright of these and i can’t and wouldn’t put them up commercially on SoundCloud etc for obv reasons ... these pieces are a bit like old photographs ... nice to get them out now and again ..,.. Keep meaning to mention ... around 45secs when the little tank engine comes into shot, if you listen closely, the rhythm of the actual piston steam is exactly on the offbeat to the music ... unintentional and coincidental but there ... like the very early Series music when we used cabassa to replicate steam 😎

Excellent to hear as always Junior - really brings back the childhood memories. In regards to what you said in the description, "HIT Entertainment and they elected to scrap all music and replace the completed Series music with the replacement composer….. Yeah the music was kept the same with the uk and Australian releases only the American version got the new composed music

Yeah... And it's kind of a pity. Given how the composer's work, that ended up being used for seasons 8-12, just paled in comparison (13-16 had its own problems), and honestly ended up being one of the things that personally made those seasons feel like a slog to sit through (other than Michael Angelis' narration kind of getting more and more like he didn't want to be there, much like what happened with Alec Baldwin in season 6).

Thank you for sharing! The music you did for this show was great and it was a great defining factor in making me love this show! In terms of this music not being used, 7 episodes in the us used this music and the entire series in the uk used it. Only in later versions they replaced the music.

Your music was actually used in Series 7, but only in the UK Dub with Michael Angelis, the US Dub with Michael Brandon used the new compositions. All the season 7 episodes are on KZbin in both dubs, I’d recommend you watch them and compare the music

Nice to hear your music bits Junior! Yours and Mike O'Donnell's provided the best soundtracks of Thomas the Tank Engine in our childhood. Also, I know this question has been asked lots of times (I think). But have you seen your recompositions of your originals themes and songs in both The Adventure Begins and Thomas and the Magic Railroad? If so, what did you think?

thanks Thomas, but there never was "a song" .... cant remember whether it was our or David's idea to finish the final ep end title theme with some lyrics, i knew Sue Glover from the old days, she lived locally, so pulled her in to sing over just 8 bars (from memory) "Far away, Across the sea. I'm missing you, you're missing me. But no matter how far away you are, .... know that I'm here to guide you home" ... which she did superbly ... i dont have a copy ... dont have anything from Tugs, which is a shame

The music you composed for series 7 was used in the UK version and pretty much every other country except for the US. It was never scrapped except for in the US. The US version of the show got brand new music by a different composer. The UK version of series 7 can be viewed on KZbin.

Why did HiT decide to replace all your guys music and completely scrap it? Your guys music was already great and they didn’t even try to replicate the characters themes and just replaced them entirely. The music you and Mike did will always be the true music of Thomas the Tank Engine!

Hi, it's amazing seeing and hearing this music in high definition without narration or the original sound effects, by the way I'm curious about this one thing, do you and Mike O'Donnell have any memories of composing music for "The Missing Coach" before it was cancelled, were there any specific variations of a character theme or small ditties composed for "The Missing Coach" that were never placed out there?

Junior, your music has indeed been heard, but only in UK TV airings and UK DVDs of Series 7. The replaced music was heard in U.S. prints of the series and, indeed, in Nick Jr UK airings of Series 7 from the mid 2000's. So, the music isn't lost at all, but it's nice that you decided to upload it anywho!

Music to my ears. I love the synth that the series used. Frankly, the replacement composer(s) after you were nowhere near as good. One odd coincidence, incidentally, is that the final few notes of the theme tune to the soap opera "Emmerdale" have always reminded me a little of one of your ending stings for series IV.
