Growing up in the states all I knew was Petula and Dusty--which I loved. The songs by Sandy and Cilla were definitely odd. Unexpected chord progressions and lyrics. Didn't know music like this existed back then. Also, Francoise is listed but no song by her.

Petula would agree ,and I do admire Dusty and saw her live in 1979 ,but in 1966 I discovered Petula whose 80 year career has taken In songwriting too but not only music ..theatre and films and comedy shows on American TV and hundreds of concerts around the world ,and has taken me from Las Vegas to Sydney and Paris not to mention all over the U.K. to see her 2 hour concerts over the years

I love all of these ladies. But Francoise Hardy is definitely the star of this collection for me. There is something timeless about her, and her look is much more modern and less plastic than the others. Considering it was 1964, she wouldn't have looked out of place today compared to the others who's look and appearance is much more dated in my opinion.

Francoise won the boys hearts at my school by a mile. Petula was considered to be "too old", Sandie was more desirable than Dusty, who was a far better singer but had an adverse track record with the Springfields as a "folk singer", but made up for it with her introducing "Motown" to the UK, and Cilla somehow never really made it in the fanciable stakes, even with her mini skirt. Lulu could have won it, but you got to remember that their managers aim in those days was to make an artiste sellable to the Mums & Dads, and so all of them rather "sold out" (in the eyes of a teenager) by becoming TV stars and having to sing a duet with whoever was the main guest - who would often be someone like Val Doonican, Rolf Harris etc so that chopped their popularity and therefore their pin up status. It was a multiple point basis, if you get my drift. Part "hip", part ability to sing, part "looker", part not having "sold out" to the oldies.
