I once heard this song during an early morning rain, getting ready for grade school in the late 60's. For reasons unknown, my sister was playing it on her little blue-and-white RCA phonograph while we were in that final rush to head on down the steps and out the door. To this day, every time I hear this song I think of that early morning rain, and every time there's an early morning rain, this song plays on an old phonograph in my memory.

Any musical group that creates musical magic is rare. Those who create a magic that lasts long after their time onstage is even rarer. PPM was such a beautiful example of this phenomenon. They captured the moonbeams in a bottle that countless musicians have sought after forever. Makes no difference what era they were in or what has happened musically since because they accomplished the elusive goal of greatness when they had the opportunity.

RIP Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary, one of my early influences of musical vocal harmonies in folk music. This trio helped vault numerous songwriters into musical prominence such as Bob Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot by performing their songs. I became a teenager during the most virulent protests for civil rights and against the Vietnam War during the 60s and 70s and the folk music of the era affected me and my peers significantly. The fingerpicking styles of many of these folk artists and old bluesmen were also responsible for creating a foundation for my current fingerstyle guitar. I perform these songs to this very day. For me, they will never be outdated.

These three are always wonderful. I've been listening to them since the 60's and they never get old.

It’s 2024 and I’m turning 68 this year. I remember listening to their music from a young age. I went into the Army in 1974 when I was 17. Even though it was the best place for me to be I was still homesick. When I was down I would sing 500 miles under my breath or in my thoughts. It’s one of those little things that carried me through that time.

Such talent does not longer exist. When we were young we lived in a musical paradise. Now it’s a complete desert.

The talent is there, no promoters, no $$. What talent do you offer?
@finisterrae5777 ай бұрын
Talent ? You must be joking. Heavy metal ? (C)rap, “big booty” songs... of course, if you’re used to shit, in the end you’ll end up eating it.

@@INUAGAIN when and where did I say I had talent. I voiced an opinion…plain and simple. Apparently you seem to be the expert here not that anybody cares. You should expound on your wealth of knowledge so the rest of us will be better informed. Anxiously awaiting your reply

It’s time for a revival of folk music. It takes you to a calmer, deeper, more reflective place. I bet a lot of people would enjoy a break from the crazy, frenetic times we’ve been in for so long.

EXCELLENT thought, although I myself have never abandoned this wonderful genre of music, even while absorbing others.

There is a folk community alive in the country. There are music festivals in the summer. Check out the Newport Folk Festival. One of my favorites who we lost recently is Bill Staines.

Just 2 guitars, 3 voices and a guy in the background on a big upright base. And so good.
@jacobsrich20102 ай бұрын
The guy in the unlit background was probably Richard Kniss who played upright bass for them for many decades. He knew just how to complement them at the bottom end.

This is beautiful! I know it’s a Gordon Lightfoot original, but my introduction to this song was hearing Elvis sing it live.

I have grown up listening and loving this song without knowing that this is actually Gordon Lightfoot's original song❤ and just realized that he has great songs that were sung by American singers, RIP and thank you Sir for your music❤

Liquid gold. Words and music in such harmony that your soul crys out for more. God bless PP&M.

The guitar work is so good and simple, serving as a soft background to the fine blending of their voices. And the layering of their voices at the beginning starting with Paul, then Peter, then Mary. This is such a rich harmonizing of vocals. I listen to this song at least 4 or 5 times a year.

PP&M are of the most well known cover bands ever; Pete Seeger (If I had a Hammer/Blowing in the Wind), Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot etc. At least Puff the Magic Dragon was somewhat original (though from a poem).

Like so many of the other commenters, I am in my 70's. I have very fond memories of P, P, and M. The lyrics, "You can't jump an airplane like you can a freight train," have stuck with me for decades, and influenced some important personal decisions I made. Great memories. Thank you.

I'm sixty three and cut my teeth to these sounds in my home. 10 years younger than most of you. I used to sing this song during my train riding hitchhiking days in my late teens and early twenties. Mom and Dad used to play this song on their turntable when I was a child, it is still a favorite all these decades later. Soooo glad I escaped my own substance abuse problems and my mental health sorted itself out, I was that man "stuck here on the grass" for many years

The talent from our generation cannot be matched. Beautiful music, beautiful time to grow up. Sure there were problems, but people were kinder, had respect, and it was a more innocent time. When I look into the eyes of some of our young people today, I see such emptiness. I'm afraid for the future of our world.
