Good shout. I use 2 Intel Minis with my M1 Mac Studio and must confess the M4 mini laughs at my M1 Studio Max. If you’re using Logic or ProTools make sure you get the mini withe most performance cores. These DAWs in particular don’t get most from efficiency cores - they need maximum performance cores which is why Logic works best (until now) with M1 10 or 12 core. Saying that, Logic works really well!

You would be insane to upgrade the Mac mini to a larger SSD, it has super fast connectors, just get an external 4TB SSD for about $300 (compare that to getting an extra 256GB for $200 from Apple). Or if you want a cheaper option you can get a 2TB and come in less than the $200/256GB Apple upgrade price. Whatever the case, Apple's base machine has great price/performance, but their upgrade prices are pure extortion. Unfortunately if you need more RAM, you're stuck, you need to pay the Apple tax for the RAM upgrade, upgrading the RAM after purchase is almost impossible.
@KochVee13 күн бұрын
I'm a budding/aspiring music producer /content-creator. If you go for the base model 256 GB, would that be enough space for loading software like LogicPro and all the plug-ins? Also, does the base model have Thunderbolt 5 ports (with 520 GB transfer speeds)?
@KochVee13 күн бұрын
Also which brand external SSD would you recommend?
@jaydee351413 күн бұрын
I would recommend 1tb. And as much ram as you can afford. This will future proof it.
@r9999t13 күн бұрын
@@KochVee Yes, the M4 Mac Mini has Thunderbolt 5 ports. For the SSD, there's tons of choices, I think you would be safe with the Samsung T9, but you could also get an M.2 enclosure and put any M.2 SSD inside that you want. The big question is how much RAM you need. Apple makes it very hard (impossible?) to only upgrade the RAM, the RAM upgrade is currently bundled with the unnecessary SSD upgrade. Only you can answer how much RAM you need, but unless you're a power user 16GB is probably going to be good enough. If you don't know if you need more RAM, the answer is most likely "no", you don't need more RAM. Alsop you need to decide how much SSD space you need, on a cost per dollar basis it's best to get more SSD up to 4TB, above 4TB they charge a crazy premium, so I wouldn't recommend that, but 4TB and below the prices (when not from Apple) are great.

@@KochVee I tried to answer before and KZbin deleted it, sigh... Anyway, Yes, the M4 Mac Mini has Thunderbolt 5 ports. How much ram does your M2 mini have? I have an M1 Pro with 16gb. The projects where I’m writing with sample libraries and mixing and mastering in the same project maxes out my machine. Yes with one consideration: How many channels of VSTs are you using? If you're doing orchestral scores with thousands upon thousands of samples in your libraries I'd go with the M4 Pro model or the regular M4 with 24gb memory. If you're doing pop/rock/country/rap/hiphop you'll be absolutely great with the 512gb base M4. I own multiple commercial studios so I have first hand experience.
