Actually, Richard Carpenter heard the Bette Midler version of Superstar and loved it and wanted to record it. The only issue was one line that he felt would not fit Karen well. On Bette's version she sings a like "I can't wait to sleep with you again" but in the Karen version he changed it to "I can't wait to see you again. Try watching the Bette Midler version sometime.

In 1978 The Carpenters recorded a song out of their comfort zone or completely different to their normal sound. The song is called "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" which was successful. The song was originally recorded in 1976 by Canadian rock band Klaatu.
