As several as said, This cover was performed as a tribute to Dolly Parton who wrote the song. They were paying tribute to Dolly. Kelly's cover is amazing it starts soft like Dolly's original and then launches into full on Whitney/Kelly. It was a breathtaking performance.

Yes, Jason Halbert, her music director is on piano. He has been working with her since just after she won American Idol, so about 20 years. She always says she wouldn't be where she is without him. He knows her voice and does all her musical arrangement. He knows her limits and what works well with her voice. He is also like her, very humble, very talented, and loves what he does. They make an amazing team! Her Kelly Clarkson show has been nominated for 9 Emmys and one is Outstanding Music Direction which is Jason Halbert. LIke you said, Kelly does justice to all her covers. She takes songs no matter the genre, puts her own spin on them, makes them her own while still respecting the original and sound amazing! How in the heck? She's a musical freak of nature and I love her!

Jason Halbert hates when he is called her musiCAL director - he is her music director. He said in an interview once that he’s not directing musicals he’s directing music. He is such a cool guy and so talented. He and Kelly are match made in heaven. 😊
