Music Teacher Reacts: Nightwish - The Islander (Live At Tampere)
My first video post 10,000 subs! Thank you for all your support!
This one was one of the more complicated ones as far as editing goes. Trying to add more features everytime to give you guys more value.
Cool song, great performance, solid musicians. What more could we ask for?
I make quite a few notes on this one and it was shot shortly after my teaching day was complete. As a result, you get a little more explanation than normal. But hey, you guys deserve it!
Trying a new thing out where you can buy me a coffee!

When Floor joined Nightwish, Marko said that he would never be afraid of overpowering the lead singer again. She just turns on more power whenever she wants - but she is so great on keeping it down and play with emotions instead. Great great song by Marko - and the rest of Nightwish. Great reaction from you 👍 🤘 🤘

I agree in this song Marco is the lead singer and when the song was created Anette was just in it for backing vocals. So No reason for Floor to be stronger in her vocals. The music video for this is amazing. A must watch.

Random fun fact speaking of Marco's vocal power/strength. It was recorded in private interviews that he and the band's sound engineers even with Tarja had to be careful to not overpower Tarja/Annette with Marco's vocals when he wasn't supposed to be lead. Not that they weren't strong singers - simply Marco's voice's sound just naturally is very strong but he said it really isn't an issue anymore as Floor has the same ability.

Yes. The comment sections say do live only, but that always annoys the crap out of me, the reactors will only be doing the same stuff as all the others if they go by comments. Live and studio serve two different purposes, it's not a one or the other thing. The originals always have much more musical detail to hear in them. The live just shows how well the play live and the energy, etc.

Gonna have to disagree here...not a fan of his work generally. While capable of *occasionally* not screwing things up (epic crane shot of Floor at the end of GLS Tampere), his edits in most of the live shows are about as completely random as could be. Though I have to say the Buenos Aires vid is much better than his older stuff, so he is getting better. To see the kind of stuff he misses/chooses not to include in the editing suite, watch the official vid of Nemo from Luna Park that's on the extras DVD of VoS, and then watch the fan shot vid of the same song...see if you can spot what's missing :). And notice how most reactors miss Floor's growls in YIAEH? Try to find a really good show her growling in anything official. All you get is little snippets from odd angles. Best shot *evar* of her in that song is from the Rock in Rio house vid.

Tuomas Holopainen is one the modern day great composers. I will never get over just how much of himself he put in to The Poet and the Pendulum. Certain people transcend song writing and lyricism to become true masters of the art and Tuomas is one of the rare ones. I am always going to be grateful to be alive at the same time as Nightwish, songs like The Poet and the Pendulum, Swanheart, Ghost Love Score, Song of Myself, The Greatest Show on Earth and Forever Yours are song I will never forget.

First thing: I can't tell you how excited I got when I saw that you were reacting to Islander, I just got off a long work shift and I really should have been going to bed, but I HAD to see you experience it. To be honest, music theory is a big part of why I adore Nightwish reaction videos. My parents are culturally Deaf (I can hear just fine) so when I was little, my music teachers (mistakenly) assumed that I'd never pick up an interest in music, much less an instrument, so I learned... virtually nothing, despite the fact that I ADORE complex and masterful music (like Nightwish). I actually VERY MUCH enjoy music theory interjections, just so that I can "see" what musicians are seeing in my favorite songs. I have a squier strat collecting dust that I would very much love to put to good use, and I would LOVE to learn even the basics of how to play The Islander. It's one of my all-time favorite songs, and I am probably the ultimate newbie, so I'm looking for all the help I can get (and I realize this is a very good place for that kind of support ;). TL;DR: YES. PLEASE.

Also, you explain Music Theory in a very simple, fantastic way which I thoroughly enjoy. Marko Hietala, the writer of this song, has his own band that I think you could enjoy reacting to. So, legit, in 20 years of me playing bass (rather badly, but I still have fun with it), I have never been able to wrap my head around music theory. I've tried, and tried, but it just never clicked. I can tune my bass to whatever, and learn to put my fingers where they need to be, but that is the extent of my ability. Really appreciate the extra value of your comments regarding music theory and keep them coming! It's good at lest for me to continue learning about all the aspects of a song. Lyrics, musical composition, interpretation of every component, etc. Gives the nightwish journey a more complete experience. Been following the band since 2002 probably and saw them live 2 months after Floor joined the band. The blew out all my doubts and surpassed all my expectations. And I love that even though I know most of their songs by heart (except the ones from the new album which I'm still listening and internalizing), I keep learning new things and aspects of them every day.

The wind instrument is a low whistle. It has a very rich warm tone. A better known whistle is the much smaller penny whistle. A great example of this can be heard in Special Star by Mango Groove. I used to think of whistles as a cheap toy-like alternative to a flute or piccalo. But I have come to appreciate their beautiful smooth, velvety tone .

I agree, I would love a lesson on this song. I play a lot of acoustic around the campfire and this song would be beautiful to add to the rotation!

I'm sticking with you because you do include music theory. So many do not. This is a wonderful teaching technique and venue. Keep up the great work. You will stand out as a reactionist due to taking the time and teaching. Great job.

Thank you so much for the great analytical content! Your videos are very enjoyable to watch and it's always nice to see observative and open-minded people appreciating the same type of things I do. Now I must disagree about the time change: I think it's 6/8 throughout the whole song, Marco is just accenting the strumming with quadruplet quarter notes? His phrasing in the vocals also adds a bit of syncopation on top of that. Overall, it's a nice layered rhythm, which is kind of the bread and butter of many folk styles in Europe (and almost everywhere :D). I totally agree with you about his guitar tone and playing, the "acoustic" kind of sound usually never works like this on an electric guitar. Keep it up, I had to subscribe :)

You need to look into Floor more. Sure nightwish is a VERY tight band, Tuomas (the writer) a genius, but to me, Floor is what really makes this incarnation of Nightwish next level. She participated in a dutch television format called "beste zangers" ('best singers'), which is NOT a competition but all 'famous' (in the netherlands) artists performing songs for each other, often by each other. Floor totally wiped the floor with everyone in this season, she made EVERY person cry when she sang one of 'their' songs, including the guy who insisted he woud never cry. By the way, it's not 'getting floored', it's called a 'floorgasm'. Floor is a master at building up different layers of tension within a song. Often she works into a climax, which is the actual floorgasm. This is best demonstrated in ghost love score, the last 20 seconds of the song. She pulls an amazing feat of singing of here. She switches from chest to head to mix to head to mix.. usually a singer can make one such swich and then need time to recuperate. She does it flawless, 2 times in a row, followd by a F#6 note sustained. I know you're into metal, but feelings are feelings, music is music. You probably don't like lady gaga. Still, you NEED to see this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2eboZhqlsRssM0 Gaga powers through this, as the song lends itself for this perfectly. However, floor takes a completely differen t approach, holds back, keeps it close and small, adding soo much to the song. It would be a very good example for studends. Ofcourse you also have to see this piece of god level stuff: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pp2mhJagq6mCgK8 Some background; this is a duet with "Henk Poort", who is a well known dutch opera singer/musical star. He played "The Phantom" in the dutch rendition of it, and was deemed "the only true phantom" by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Henk is floors childhoold idol, which explains the chemistry between the both. Note that this was the second time in his live, for Hank, to sing with distortion, which ofcourse in the classical scene is frowned upon. Maybe he overdid it a bit out of enthousiasm, but man, what a performance. Also nice to compare this (for students) to the same song, also floor, but now way more classical: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJ3Cdmx7lL-tptU And if you want Floor full force classical, you MUST see this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5a3qnSQqbtoras A classical piece by Puccini. You might want to dedicate an episode just to floor and her versatility. If you explore her earlier work, you'll find that this lady does it all, she can also grunt. Last tip; find several live performances of nightwish with the same song, and put them next to each other. You'll find that, even though they are truly performed live, they are simply the same, to the millisecond. The drummer is playing to one hell of a clicktrack.

If it wasn't already answered... the wind instrument was a Low D whistle. Irish whistles go from tiny high G, to your common D, C, and Bb, to your huge "Low" G, E / F, and D. Basically it's an end-blown flute.

This is one of the rare Nightwish songs for which the recorded version of the music video is also very interesting. Also would be really interested to you reacting to the new lyric videos for the songs of the new album Human|Nature, as they are doing lots of interesting things musically and vocally, and finally the 2 acoustic performances that Troy did with Floor for Planet Rock, of the songs Nemo and How's the Heart, where we discover that he is also a great guitar player, as if this guy was not multi-talented enough as it is.

The recommended song is much heavier and a "bit" faster.. wount say more, you need to check yourself ;) And there is a drumcam version if you still have energy to check the work needed from drummer on that piece... m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXS9ipuFbNuNotE Even you are more guitar guy I am sure you will appreciate as a some late nite snack and check Kai Hahto's warmup routine video. Jammin around the campfire is exactly what is shown in the music video. Marco the bassist also has some classical guitar training. Troy plays many traditional instruments. This one is called a low whistle. Troy has many different sizes. Size equal pitch. These are sometimes referred to a tin whistles. Great analysis. I am a guitarist and love your detailed theory analysis. I am curious if Marco was using alternate tuning?

Finally someone worthy to react to Nightwish 😉! But seriously, such a pleasure to hear someone really understanding the geniality of their music and analysing and explaining, why it’s so damn good. Your reaction to the Poet and the Pendulum was just spot on and I found it very satisfying, someone else pointing out those awesome things about that song, why I myself think it’s a masterpiece of contemporary music. Please, react to the Last Ride of the day. 🤘

Great reaction. I love you going into the theory a bit more. So many don't, so it's nice to see the reaction. While I adore the live version to this and While Your Lips Are Still Red, the official videos are awesome and very well done. I don't know for sure, and I am probably very wrong, but I think Troy is playing a type of flute or penny whistle...just a very large one. Not the ones in the normal higher range. If I'm wrong, my apologies!
