Bootsy knows the James Brown vibe first hand having played bass in his band as a teen. He was so young, James Brown actually had to get permission from Bootsy’s mom to let him go on the road!

I have my stank face on the entire time this song plays 😩 This unbridled energy of the pure, nasty FUNK in 777 is just incredible. Not only does this one radiate James Brown vibes in their vocal deliveries and that guitar, but the shouts and way the chorus breaks out with those horns is very Kool & The Gang on “Jungle Boogie” and “Open Sesame” as well! That breakdown in the bridge is the essence of Funk, same with that call-and response in this one. The rhythm section going crazy, the catchy refrains that stick in your ear, the soulful runs from Bruno is just too classic for words. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Brody Brown does his THING on the bass, and he’s been a writing partner for Bruno since the latter’s early days. Glad to have him on board for tracks like this and Leave The Door Open. The only complaint I have with this song is that I wish the funk didn’t stop so soon 🔥🔥 I’m excited for the reaction to Blast Off, definitely a favorite of mine! I’m glad that this series was possible 😭

Me too, Brody has played with Bruno and in his band in the very early days and Brody has said after that whenever Bruno records he always gives him a call although he can get anyone he wants, so he’s always grateful to him.

I think a lot of people don't realize that artists are very meticulous and intentional about the order in which their tracks appear on their albums. Most albums are meant to be played in the order they appear to tell the story, but people have such short attention spans and tend to skip around and just focus on the "singles" or radio hits, unfortunately that missing the bigger picture.

@@dianad3080 so true. It's actually a lost art from alot of artists as well. Instead of making an album that flows from beginning to end. They become this slap dash haberdashery of just attempt hit one after another and it becomes chaotic to listen to...

I love how you talk about WHY we love the songs on this album. To me, there is so much complexity and nuance that the average listener wouldn’t know to listen for. I’ve seen other reactions, and only a handful talk about how the music is put together…and those are the ones giving rave reviews. Then there are others that only get surface deep or don’t understand what this group and album are trying to do, and they aren’t very impressed (or at least not as much as musicians like yourself). I also like how you talk about where the instruments and voices are in the headphones as you’re listening. It made me hear it in a different way and appreciate their level of detail in the finished product.

Appreciate the little take on James Brown. Never really knew just how big and influential he was since it was way before my time. I do remember my dad making me watch a lot of live performances from big artists as a kid, and I remember watching some James Brown concert that was just absurdly good. His band was also so good, all the time.

It also refers to a plane, flying out to Vegas, so a double entendre. Paak is good at rapping with double meanings. He did something similar in Fly as Me when he said "Boo you up at the Apollo". That can mean , boo you up to be my boo (be my girlfriend, bae) and/or people would get on stage at the Apollo and perform and if they were bad, they would get booed off stage and get escorted off/chased off by a guy/clown with a giant curved hook/cane. The beginning of this song, you can hear the sound of an airplane, so it means both.
