Another on point reaction to The Warning, with one disagreement: The only people that would consider Pau underrated are those who haven’t seen her perform. Those of us who have know that our lives haven’t been the same since. She didn’t get the nickname Shredder by cutting paper into thin strips.

I’m looking forward to Ale’s playing on this new album. She was only 13 for the last album (15 when she recorded this track). Two years of work will mean a lot of new skills. While she sings and plays keyboards, her first love is really the bass.
@markjames8664
@markjames8664 3 жыл бұрын
They spent a week recording the drums for this album, and another week for bass. Ale and Pau are good enough for the first take to be fine, but from what they say producer David Bendeth pushed them pretty hard toward excellence. He also worked with them a lot on timing-like most musicians today they grew up with a click track, but Pau said he taught her to play a little off that, and Ale talked of learning new things about her timing with the drums. They’ve mentioned how they are practicing these lessons for live shows. This is way too subtle for me to hear directly, but I think you can hear this a bit in the middle verse, which has a bit of a jazz groove feel to it for me.
@westmus
@westmus 3 жыл бұрын
@@markjames8664 the timing thing way have gotten a little lost, since the girls from the start have learned to play to a clicktrack. The old rock heros didn't have any computers or clicktrack, they just played on feel. I saw a video were someone explained how Hendrix intentionally used playing ahead og behind the beat on the same song to give different parts of that song the right feel. Bonhams drum timing on the LZ recordings are also bad, if you measure with a computer. But the way he's timing was off was a big part of his exact sound/feel.

Yes that is a 35th Anniversary Custom 24 Fire Red Burst PRS she received in march and has enjoyed using it lately. Ale's 5 string bass was made specifically for her and they delivered it to her for the start of recording of the 3rd album. Spector is also releasing a signature bass in her name later this year, and to think she is still only 16!! Pau is so good at coming up with awesome drum beats in their songs! They are such great musician already in their young lives and career. I love how powerful this video and the audio sound. Very well produced and cant wait to hear the rest of the album... BUT they played it live in their basement yesterday and it was awesome! they sound great live and they did a couple things different than you hear in the video. They are not willing to compromise their artistic vision (and have been known to tell their parents to fibble off on occasion when they make suggestions that do not meet with DPA's approval). Working themselves to the bone, including being driven relentlessly? They have no objection to that. They sounded really happy last night to have worked with David Bendeth. I think Dany said that he pushed her to do things vocally that she never thought she could, and she sounded very grateful for that.

Hey, glad ro see you circle back to The Warning and what a track to return with! Dany has been playing Rick Toone Spearfish guitars for a few years now but here in this performance she is playing her PRS SE Mark Holcomb SVN she also gets that channel separation from her pedal board, She uses it to divide and with a little delay add space. Ale is player custom Spector USA 5 bass she received just before recording started for the new album. Today she also revealed her signature Spector USA Alejandra Villarreal that will on sale soon. The guitar sound in the studio version are seperate different guitar tracks , not the "fake" stereo they use live with a delayed channel in one side of the PA. Listen to the first riff in the song, The guitar are in one side, then a second sligtly different guitar sound are added in the other side of the mix. That's how "big" sound are done in modern studio production The one guitar you hear are often more than one guitar track played at the same time, same with vocals. Dany's vocal may be 2, 3 or 4 different takes stacked into one sound.

Again,another awesome reaction to what is gonna be the big breakthrough song for them. The girls are totally on fire here,with what I think are influences from Evanescence,Devilskin,Meatallica and Stone Temple Pilots. Your breakdown of this song is so spot on,and quick pickup on the PRS guitar Dany is using. This song also highlights how much Danys vocals have come along in the past year. Paus backing vocals are a bit more subdued here,and so is her drumming (If you can believe that),and Ale has a little spotlight vocal appearance doing the refrain towards the end. Another great reaction again..a quick edit here,love Alterbridge .

_"And she is not underrated by any of her/their many fans"_ I have to agree about this. It's only lately that she has stepped down from the throne to let some sun shine on her sisters as well. In the beginning ( _for me back in 2013_ ) it was all about Paulina, but today most fans realize that these sisters are equally good at what they do and none of them seem to try to take the spotlight from another and just perform what the song requires. They might fight when they write the songs but what is agreed on is followed in detail during performances.

You can see that her name "Dany" is written on the plastic plate on the headstock. Additionally, she's getting various guitars from Fender, most notably a Acoustasonic. She is currently experimenting with PRS and some Fenders as well. I am not sure what she used in the studio to get this particular sound, but she had several loaners from Rick Toone that were designed to be detuned, as well as some baritone type guitars that were owned by the producer.

Dany used to play a Rick Toone Spearfish, but now is usually seen with a PRS. Ale is playing her Spector Alejandra Villereal USA Signature 5-string in her exclusive colour scheme, so her bass is unique to her. Not bad for someone who was only 16 at the time they signed her up!

Enjoyed your reaction. I don’t think the drummer Paulina (or Pau =“pow”) is considered underrated by most who watch their videos since her powerful drumming and ability to sing lead while playing drums is often the focus of attention. She also writes and composes most of their songs, initially on piano; programs and runs the guitar footboard effects, and in the past has run the graphics projections during live shows. She is a multi talented force of nature! 😎
@krash66

Yes, but she does NOT program and run the guitar effects, and does not write and compose most of their songs. She comes up with most of the basic song ideas. Her sisters freely admit she is the most creative of the three. However, she freely admits, she comes up with usually a chorus and a pre-chorus, shows her sisters, then all three build each song. She also freely admits that she sucks at writing melodies. As for the guitar effects, Dany programs those in her pedalboard (there is an hour long "rig rundown" video where Dany goes through the process of how she programs and uses her Line 6 Helix Pedalboard), and the different effects for each song are stored in the pedalboard (If the click track fails, Dany can still control all her effects manually on the pedalboard). Then, since they have some great electronics, Pau can add a trigger that changes the song in the pedalboard, using the click track software (Ableton Live 10 for Mac), along with a trigger for the visuals on the video screen. Then, when Pau changes songs, the correct guitar effects are chosen on Dany's Pedalboard (which Dany then controls) for that particular song. Dany used to have to change songs in her pedalboard herself during shows. Pau is amazing at a lot of things, and I am not trying to sell her short (no pun intended), but she is not a magician. LOL Ale and Dany especially, deserve a lot more credit than they get, in these aspects. I'm not trying to contradict you, just clarify.
@robertkrawitz8237

@@krash66 To clarify, what I thought I heard Dany say is that Pau doesn't control the timing of the effects, just programs which effect (that Dany has designed and I guess one might say coded) maps to which button on the board. So for this song I suspect Dany has written a set of effects (call them A, B, C), each of which is assigned a different pedal. For Dull Knives or Survive, it's a different set. Pau in turn has programmed Ableton Live to upload those effects for each song, but does not control the timing (Dany does that herself completely on the fly). Dany didn't discuss it in her tech talk, but I suspect that she has a set of generic effects programmed that she can use if something goes wrong with the IT. That would be the sensible way to go. They've had enough tech mishaps that I'm sure they have escape hatches like that. So if something goes wrong, Dany won't necessarily get exactly what she wants on each song, but has enough buttons that she can get something that she can use.
@krash66
@krash66 3 жыл бұрын
@@robertkrawitz8237 Close.. Dany programs the effects for each song into the Pedalboard. Say there are 5 different effects Dany wants for Narcisista. She programs each effect to a different color button on her board. Let's say, Blue for the chorus, yellow for the bridge, red for the lead and white for the solo. Those are all saved locally in the pedalboard and she even names them and saves them as a song "set" of effects. You can see that in the LCD display in the Pedalboard. She has the effects for every song saved in the pedalboard. Dany is very color oriented, so for each song she uses the same color (I don't specifically remember her colors, but..) scheme for the different parts of the song. She can manually scroll through all of their songs by herself in the pedalboard... it is TOTALLY independent from Pau's laptop. However, Pau can add a MIDI signal to the click track or an IP signal from Ableton when Pau selects the song (not sure which), so that when Pau changes songs on the Ableton Software, a signal is sent to Dany's Pedalboard to select the correct song that Dany already preprogrammed in the pedalboard, (Not sure if that signal is MIDI or Ethernet-TCP/IP, probably TCP/IP) so she doesn't have to select it herself. It is not "loading" the song from Pau's laptop, it is merely telling Dany's pedal board the song to select. If Pau's computer explodes, Dany still has all her settings for each song in her pedalboard. Just now she will have to select the song herself. In their shows where the click track has failed, there is no change in Dany's guitar settings because they are independent of Pau's computer. I hope that clarifies it.

I love seeing people discover The Warning. I would like to see you react to the drummer Pau (pronounce as Pow) covering Creep by Radiohead. Pau had posted a poll on Instagram for people to pick a song for her to cover (Creep-Radiohead, Amor Ausente-Eruca Sativa, The Scientist-Cold Play, Idontwannabeyouanymore-Billie Eillish) Creep by Readiohead won the most votes. Hence the “YES” at the end. BTW Pau the lead songwriter, she is the one that starts working on lyrics and or music then she brings it to her sister where they work together to flush out the rest of the song. There are only a few songs so far where she is not credited.

Comparing the official video to the one they did in their home studio, referred to as "The Cave" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWelp4muaNypitU -- actually, the one I watched was a different one available to patreon supporters, but I doubt the sound was very different), I had some observations and thoughts that I'd like your comment on. On my primary system (~100wpc receiver set to "pure" mode, B&W towers, Hsu ULS-15mk2 sub), the Cave version sounded much better -- a lot cleaner and much more prominent bass. At a given volume setting, the video did sound a lot louder, but certainly not cleaner, and the Cave version had much more dynamic range, felt louder, with Ale's bass line much more prominent and more tactile, and the individual drum hits were much harder. My suspicion is that the version in the video was mastered for typical mobile devices and earbuds, and as such was likely compressed heavily with the deeper bass relegated to the background. That would make sense; mobile devices have feeble amplifiers that can't reproduce the kind of dynamic range in the live performance, nor can they (or typical earbuds) reproduce low bass. My gear clearly can; 30 Hz is nothing for that sub. I watched your review on my tablet and went back to the live performance for comparison. The video sounded *relatively* much better on that device, which suggests that my hypothesis might be correct about what's going on. If that's the case, I hope that the CD and high quality audio files are mastered with dynamic range and bass suitable for higher fidelity equipment. Curious about any thoughts you might have on this.

Update: the Patreon one isn't significantly different from the public one. There are some minor differences within what I'd expect of individual performance, but they're substantially the same -- both plenty of dynamics and powerful bass, and the both the entrance and Pau's drum hits really hit me hard without an overwhelming sense of loudness. I have a SPL meter, and that confirmed the dynamics. The video had slightly higher levels in A-weighting, but in C-weighting the live showed higher peaks, indicating more low bass (just as I noticed). Although interestingly, the video shook something off the main speakers that the live didn't. Probably the video had more upper bass that my mains can reproduce; they are tuned low enough for the low bass, but 6.5" woofers simply won't put out a lot of energy at 30-40 Hz. Getting away from my nerdly side (yeah, right...) to my TWA side, the live version really shows off just how outstanding they are live.
@westmus
@westmus 3 жыл бұрын
@@robertkrawitz8237 , I like nerdy stuff. The YT video cast to my big stereo got powerful deep bas. A way more punchy sound than the QOTMS recordings. But Ale' bass sounds mostly like a mumble somewere back in the mix. Is sounds nearly more like computer made bass than a real bass. Live from the cave you can hear its a real bass being played. It's probably what I dislike most about modern studio production, they are trying to make human played acustic instruments computer perfect. It makes the music sound syntetic.
@robertkrawitz8237
@robertkrawitz8237 3 жыл бұрын
@@westmus I actually checked it with an SPL meter. The live versions had a lot more dynamic range and the peaks (both A-weighted and C-weighted) were higher than with the video, but the video gave sustained higher A-weighted readings (A-weighted is intended to weight for human hearing; C-weighting is much flatter, particularly in the deep bass, where A-weighting is practically nil). I think I actually listened to the video sent to the patreons, but I compared it against the official video, and there was very little difference on my computer speakers (which have a decent subwoofer). Both of the Cave versions had a much harder kick in the bass, again to the extent that the smaller subwoofer can reproduce low frequencies.

If you see them live Paulina on drums has the ability to draw a majority of the attention. However, she doesn’t. Vocals are great. Playing is tight. Dani has more energy than anyone I’ve seen in a long time (only Fernanda Lira from Crypta rivals it). Her voice is incredible recorded and in person. Alejandra’s playing on bass was hard to hear live, but glad you pointed out the intricacies, as she takes some garbage from insecure clowns on social media. She does have some backup vocals and a deeper voice. They can be quiet at times live. Thanks for the great episode. Loved it.
