@@MusicShed Your comment made me wonder so I listened to the breaths she takes in both versions and there are differences (more than a few.) There is a sound track with her harmonies in the background, that she also does in her concerts. She just released the video for "No Time to Die" and I think that is lip synced because it's more of a theatrical performance.

@@MusicShed Billie Always Plays live with a backing track that honestly is too "Rich" to be used live. Basically there are all the album instruments that are not playing live plus backing vocals. On the Other Hand they add dynamics when performing live , giving a richer sound compared to the CD version, and in my opinion that's the important part when we talk about Electronic-sounds based performance. That said, in my opinion, and you can see It in some camera changes, they played the Song at least two times, they have chosen the best performance audio-wise and then edited the video using footages And Angles from both performances. As for the live parts they are: Analog Bass (overlapped with the synth bass of the original song in the backtrack), Analog Drums (overlapped with a few bit of the studio drum sounds in the back track) and of course the main voice part (with all the Other parts in the back track, sometimes She also sings "on top" of the track to recreate the "airy" effect of the double voice). EDIT: i forgot the piano, but it's live only when you see Them playing EDIT2: when i Say Always I mean the non-acoustic performances. For example One of my favorite Is the iTunes One, where ALL you hear Is live, but it's obvious haha

It was live, but you can hear the background vocal track. If you want to see a more raw version, she recently did another live performance on “Tiny Desk”. Please check that one out. A lot of her live performances sound very much like the recorded versions because they refuse to use pitch correction while recording “studio” tracks. They also don’t record in studios. Her EP and first album were all recorded in her brother’s bedroom. Now he has moved out of their childhood home and has his studio in his basement and that’s where they record now.

The performance was 100% live and she just used the background track to make it perfect and if you think when the beat dropped up it became lip sing no cause you can hear the deferent at the whispering between that performance and the studio version

They always have backing tracks in the soundscape always on tour. Her vocal is live as well her keyboard playing and the drums. The rest like harmonies and whatever other instruments Finneas programmed are in the mix. I have bitched for years about the fact I wish she would add at least a guitar player and increase the actual live sound. So drums, guitar, and Finneas can concentratie on bass & keyboards.

Billie had the best response when asked if she or Finnesa screw up on a song do they start over. Billie said Finneas and I screw up all the time, the only one who doesn't screw up is Andrew he's a professional!

Thanks for another great reaction and an appreciation of their talents. The puppy is her adopted pit bull rescue "Shark". I do believe she was singing live but I think they may have made at least two recordings. I noticed that Billie's shirt has spots (looks like dog drool) in a couple scenes and then they disappear again.

So, with things like Ableton Live you can sing and play live in real time but trigger other sounds, such as backing tracks and vocals that come in and give you pre recorded stuff but it isn't quite the same as playing to a backing track because you control the backing rather than it controlling you. Kind of like using a live sequencer.

I know everyone in the comments is adamant it's live with just backing tracks but I'm with David that I'm not sure that this one was. Only bc there's specific throat tells with her live and there were a couple places with un-synced lips. There are small tells as a vocalist that just stand out. So I'm unconvinced, too. And there's nothing wrong with a produced video in this time.

There is a mix behind her, but her vocals are live. Listen to the studio version. it's not quite the same. Billie's songs tend to be highly produced. it would be impossible to pull off live without at least some of a track behind her. The drumming is live. the bass is live. billie's voice is live and so was fineas' :)

@@MusicShed because she can actually sing. Most of today's musicians rely too much on auto-tune or, yes, lip-syncing. But I've heard her live. If you listen to the studio version, you will hear the difference. And every time she sings a song live it's a little different to the last time she did. Back when I was younger, people had to actually be able to sing well to make a career of it, so I'm used to the idea that people can pull off a good performance live. I get that it's harder for younger generations to understand it because of the direction today's pop music has taken...

She also did not write Ocean Eyes. That was a Finneas song originally for his band. The sound sucked with the band so he offered it to Billie and the rest is history.
