I enjoy listening to the fantastic Icelandic band, Sigur Ros while I am reading. The album, Takk is particularly good to accompany a good book.
@becomingabookworm6 ай бұрын
Oh yes! I have never tried, but I love Sigur Ros. I feel like that is one of the bands where I can´t not be actively listening. It sometimes feels like I am floating into their music.

It's so interesting how different people process music! I am just the opposite or you...there is virtually no music I can listen to as I read. WHhen I listen to music, I find myself analyzing it...balance, harmonies etc & it takes me out of my reading. The only music I can somewhat read to is the type that is synthesized new age non metered piece which people use to help relax or sleep etc.
@OhioEddieBlack6 ай бұрын
I am the same - when I read I want sound to be on because I have a lot of tinnitus and other weird noises my ears make and it's distracting but I can't listen to music unless there are no lyrics because the lyrics distract me from reading. I like soundtracks like the music from Lord of the Rings or a video game with great music like Elder Scrolls. But my favorite even over instrumental music is I like to listen to one of those KZbin channels where there's like a scene with a fireplace and it's raining and there's some quiet music in the background so you get a combination of cozy sounds. That drowns out the weird noises my ears make but doesn't distract me from the words on the page. There are a ton of good videos like that. I really appreciate the people who take time to make them and post them.
@becomingabookworm6 ай бұрын
Indeed! I can definitely do both and as always being active in the activity makes for a more immersive experience. One of my favorite KZbin-activities is searching for vocal harmonies separated from the original tracks. There are nearly always some layers of sound you don’t register when passively listening to songs.

I actually HAD to listen to music while reading today because I sat besides someone on a plane that spoke loudly and A LOT 😂 Went straight for Miriam Stockley and it worked perfectly!

Haven't tried listening to music while reading in years. My reading endurance is abysmal these days, so it couldn't hurt much. I love Brubeck. Will check out some of those others. If I was to play one now I'd go with Phil Keaggy's "Beyond Nature" or "The Master & The Musician". Congrats on 200.

Congratulations on the 200!! I can only listen to instrumental music while reading, for instance I like Nils Frahm a lot, but The Knife and Susanne Sundfør are among my favourite artists in general! I recently also have another Norwegian favourite: Aurora. Really recommended, probably you'll know her already ☺

Thanks! I also like Frahm! I have seen Aurora a bunch of times and I think she just gets better and better. She has an amazing voice.

Ah Via Musicom is one of my favorite albums of all time. Even have an autographed copy! I never would have thought to listen to it while reading because some of them have the singing, but perhaps I should give it a shot. I’ve always just assumed I couldn’t pay attention to the books with singing. So I usually grab something instrumental on a youtube “for reading search”. It might amuse you but every car stereo I have ever owned I have calibrated the eq to “Trademark” off of that album :)
@becomingabookworm6 ай бұрын
You could try, but if you enjoy reading without music I would say that it´s still a viable option. It´s a great album, a bit jealous that you have a signed copy.. I have never thought about having that song as a cablibration song, but it makes sense. I have briefly worked as a sound tech at concerts and my calibration go to was alway "what it is" by Mark Knopfler :)

Congratulations! I can block out background noise, including music, when I read. But I cannot read and listen to music and enjoy both at the same time. - this is very interesting...
@becomingabookworm6 ай бұрын
Thanks! I don´t think I listen very much either. It´s more like when I zoom out of the reading I can hear the music, but the music disappears when I read. Or at least it´s there at at a subconscious level.

Congratulations on the milestone. Thanks for the music recs, too. I used to listen to music when drawing/painting or doing other creative things. Not sure if I could listen to anything with lyrics while reading, though. I'll have to give those a listen. Even if I can't read along, I love discovering new music.
@becomingabookworm6 ай бұрын
Thank you! I would struggle with music focusing on lyrics too. Reading while listening to Bob Dylan would never work for me. I listen to a lot of music while I do jigsaw puzzles with the kids, that is perfect!

There was a phase when i was young where i listened to the Celtic Circle albums while reading LotR, The Silmarillion and Forgotten Realms novels so that music will always be connected to the books in my mind. Other than that i would mainly listen to classical music. Go to artists are Beethoven, Vivaldi, Mozart, J.S. Bach, George Frideric Handel

I love listening to music while reading. I once mentioned that i listened to a protagonist's favourite musician while reading the book and someone said that was really odd 😂 thankfully i was not alone and there were other readers that like listening to music simultaneously. I havent liatened to norah jones in ages - thanks for the reminder.

Haha, I understand that very well! When songs or artists are mentioned in books I always put them on to "feel the mood". Especially if I don´t know the song I really want to have the full experience. I have listened a lot to Norah Jones records, there are so many good ones!
