My mother will be 96 years old in two months, and has both dementia and aphasia. She has been with us almost 4 years, and in that time, I have done many hours of research to find supplements and activities that would help her. The supplements help to support her brain, but mental and physical stimulation is also extremely important.
The music therapy provided by Mary Ellen Heelan of Heelan Music has helped my mother so much both mentally and physically. With each session, my mother's participation increases, and the energy stays with her the rest of the day.
This video may not mean much for those that have never had to care for a parent or person with dementia, but for those that have, or are, you can appreciate the level of participation from a person that tends to sleep the better part of the day or doesn't always react to family member attempts at communication.
Unfortunately, this is one method of therapy for the elderly that Medicare does not recognize or pay for. Yet the benefits of music therapy can be more beneficial than any other. It's time that music therapy be re-evaluated by Medicare so that it can be made available for people that cannot afford to pay for this therapy out-of-pocket.
Please "like" this video and send it to anyone that you know who is caring for an elderly person or a person with dementia. This type of therapy would likely be very beneficial for a multitude of other physical and mental disabilities.
