Ever wonder what it's like making a real Music Video?
The live band typically plays along to the finished recorded song. In order to match the song perfectly the song is played out loud through a PA. The musicians perform their parts with out amplifiers turned on, and with the drums muted. This will allow them to hear the song and match their parts perfectly for post production editing.
Drums are LOUD. In order to bring the volume low enough for everyone to hear the PA we use rubber mutes over the drums that look like drumheads, and cymbals called "video deads." These "video deads" are two REAL cymbals glued together. Once glued they just make a low volume "clunk" sound. Most larger instrument rental houses, such as SIR or Center Staging, carry a wide variety of video deads in every major brand and a multitude of sizes and models.
Most music videos I can be seen using 14" Hi Hats, two 18" Crashes, a 20" Ride and occasionally an 18" China. All Paiste, all Video Deads.
