The drummer is a classically trained musician and multi-instrumentalist. There are videos of him (Vlad) on the Jinjer’s KZbin and Instagram playing cover versions of songs on guitar and a movement from a Rachmaninoff piece on piano. His approach to drumming is very musical. The band really came together when he joined as drummer, IMO.

I checked him out playing a Rachmaninoff Prelude (one I've also learnt before - so know it well) and I think you're correct regarding his piano ability influencing the musicality of his drumming style. He's one of the most exciting metal drummers I've heard in years.

@@tackle47 Oh, for sure. They’ve been great for awhile, and would have continued to be great if Yevhen Mantulin had not suffered that crippling injury. Vlad just brings something different - a groove or swing to the approach that isn’t straight ahead metalcore like the earlier stuff. It’s been a blast to watch their evolution and rise.

Speaking of the mixing and how it’s 4 people in the band. It’s actually 5! They wholly consider their sound engineer as a member of the band.

As I understand it their main sound engineer is Dimitry Kim, the drummer just before Vlad.

There's two different sound people who are vital to their sound. Sasha is their live sound guy who goes wherever they go and they consider their "fifth" member because he's always on tour with them and has been with them for a long time. He mixes from the the floor at every venue with a tablet. You can see it in the Retrospection vid around the 60s mark. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZmVqoKbl8h4hK8. Dmitry Kim (their former drummer) mixes their live stuff in post back in Kiev. They both had their hands on this one.

Live and in the studio, they have to be the clearest sounding band in metal. Especially their last two studio releases. I'm an old 80s metal head, and if I can't make out the riffs or hear the bass, it's useless to me!

Roman did "shred" a bit in one of their older songs, called A Plus Or A Minus. There's a playthrough video on Jinjer's YT channel, if you want to check it out. His picking-hand work in that song is a joy to watch. : ) About the live backing tracks: as a musician myself who's part of a band that doesn't have a human rhythm section, it's no big deal because they'll always be synced with the programmed bass and drums but for a band with a human rhythm section like Jinjer, the most challenging part is to have a perfect timing so that they don't "fall" out of place. In their case it's Vlad who starts the backing tracks at the beginning of the songs that have them and I have to say that even with so much going on rhythmically, the backing tracks always fall perfectly in place. : )

As a layman I detest 'lipsyncing" but when you have 3 musicians and a single vocalist delay, echo and backing tracks are almost a must do, but must be done perfectly and Jinjer always hits the mark, just enough and in the right places.

Feel free to do the official video too, if you want. It's really good, and I actually struggled for a long time to decide between the two, when it comes to suggestions for reactors (as the majority do just one or the other). One little detail I especially love about this song, is that the tempo change happens right when she sings about "In my head head, someone else - Setting snares - For my soul". It just feels so fitting, literally but also metaphorically when we think about mental illnesses, especially depression. I think the doubled vocal lines are added in post though, as part of the high quality live video mix. Same for the audio levels of the instruments or her vocals, as the high quality ones are most likely recorded straight from the PA, and then mixed afterwards. The Kiev show was originally planned to become a live DVD, but this was also their first time doing their own lighting, which backfired hard because they couldn't really see anything and ended up making a lot of mistakes.

i know you haven't touched a lot on the vocals, let alone the lyrics, however, the virtuosity of their songwriting includes how the lyrics and instrumentals tie so well to each other thematically. i.e., right after she sings "in my head...someone else...setting snares for my soul", the beat changes a different dissonant chord comes into play and she goes into her growl. there are a lot of dimensions to their composition that are fun to pick apart the more you listen

The mixing duties for this show was done by Max Morton - the same guy that mixed the records. The guy is a genius when it comes to setting a soundscape and giving instruments and vocals room to breathe.

Heh, you haven't even begun to go down the rabbit hole of all the places Jinjer pulls references from. You heard a bit of rap (and, arguably, djent) in Teacher, Teacher, but they pull in everything from lounge jazz to reggae, not to mention just about every sub-genre of metal, yet somehow even while every song has its own life and feel, they're always still unmistakably Jinjer. I totally agree with your assessment that they're one of the best bands I've ever heard in my life, if not simply _the_ best, full-stop. Yes, you can hear even more insane virtuosity from Dream Theater, or more rhythmic virtuosity from Meshugga, or more pounding riffs from Metallica, or arguably even a bit more song-before-ego from Disturbed, but... Jinjer is the total package. They do _everything_ extremely well without overdoing any of it, and I just adore them! Especially everything with Vlad in it is just nuts levels of incredible. Their previous drummer, Dmitriy Kim, had really solid metal chops, but nothing like Vlad's level of sophistication and paradoxically enormous minimalism. The starkest difference between them to me is in their blast beats. Dmitriy's were very tight, very fast, very unified, perfectly in the pocket... and kinda boring. Vlad's are _magical._ They manage to drag behind the beat in this incredible, compelling way that many times has had me _swearing_ he actually lost a beat, but then you go back and listen to it, and no... it's perfect, it's just not in a hurry, in a way that, for me at least, I just _cannot_ not focus in on and get excited about. Normally I find blast beats to be pretty bland, but man does Vlad bring them whole new levels of life and meaning! Same with Tati. I'm normally not a big fan of growling/screaming. I love me some distortion-David Draiman comes to mind-but like, the guy in Meshugga drives me absolutely nuts. He sounds like the angriest Kermit the Frog of all time. But Tatiana? Holy shit has she opened me up to what growls and screams can add to music when they're done _that freaking well!_ Fun bit of trivia... nobody in Jinjer now is a founding member. So none of them actually have any idea what the name means or signifies. Also, you don't seem to be much of a gear-head, but check out Roman's guitar in most recent performances (pretty much anything under Napalm) and Eugene's signature headless bass. Those are just _gorgeous_ instruments, custom-made for each of them by different master luthiers. Eugene also does a walkthrough of how he makes his bass tone in one video on their channel that's really cool... and he also does a lot of bass playthroughs. They're just nuts! The intricacy of those bass parts is totally next-level and a big part of why they sound as _humongous_ as they do despite being a four-piece. I do sometimes wish they'd bring on another guitarist so that the rhythm guitar parts present in a ton of their songs could be played live on stage, but... at the same time, a large part of their magic is their chemistry together. They're _so_ locked in with each other, and I'm sure they worry that a fifth member could throw that vibe off.

Great reaction and so true about layering vocals or using backing click tracks or anything else. It is an acceptable technique to give more "thickness" to the live performance and as you said in no way detracts from what the whole band are doing. Indeed it adds to the performance by allowing a band, especially a four piece like Jinjer to have an amazing live sound. Reverb, sound delay etc are all absolutely fine, now autotune that is a different matter!

@@JWSoundworks2 I'd be curious if it is added in post as the vocal layer in Perennial at Wacken seemed to be since they didn't appear to be part of the bootleg, or if they are backing tracks like the Russian harmonies are in bootlegs of Retrospection (though omitted frome the live in Melbourne version). There is a really good bootleg of PoC from Berlin uploaded by George M but I don't have the ear to distinguish such subtleties.

Alright, so first off, people claiming no backing tracks are just crazy. You can literally _see_ what I assume is protools running on Vlad's laptop, and there are many places where it's obvious that there are backing tracks for vocal doubling, vocal harmony, rhythm guitar, ambient sounds like that keyboard hit with huge reverb during the break after... what I guess I'd call the bridge. So you're right about that. What matters is that they are actually performing _live,_ which they definitely are (you can hear little issues here and there once you know the studio track really well, and even mic feedback and the like), and how it _sounds,_ which is freaking amazing! From what I understand, their writing style is that first Roman, Eugene, and (more recently) Vlad write the instrumental parts, then Tatiana writes the vocals and lyrics. She sometimes writes in Russian or Ukrainian and then translates it to English (except for two songs in which she does sing in Russian); other times she writes directly in English. Also, they _do_ have bad performances, which is further proof that it's true live. They just... don't push those ones online, heh. If you want to see a bad performance, check out Pisces from Wacken, the same concert that Perennial is from. It's _terrible!_ Tatiana is way out of tune, the timing isn't as tight as usual... I mean, it's still recognizable and enjoyable, but it's not their usual level of perfection. There's also a performance of I Speak Astronomy (I think in Kiev) where I'm pretty sure Tati's monitors completely failed and she totally lost the pitch of the song, out by half an octave or more, and even lost rhythm at times. (When you do I Speak Astronomy, that's definitely one for the official video, by the way. It's one of the coolest music videos I've ever seen!) Anyway, the fact that they aren't _always_ perfect makes their full live concert at Melbourne even more incredible to me, as it's a full concert filmed live, and it's freaking _perfect_ from start to finish.

Totally agree. The places where I've mainly seen it with my own eyes, used to deceive people, was in the wedding band circuit (which I played in for several years as a keyboardist). I actually witnessed someone from a band on stage pretending to play the keyboard. He wasn't even miming the correct notes/chords or playing in time with the backing tracks he was using. It was painful to witness. I know it's quite common these days for professional bands to use partial studio takes and other things to enhance their sound live. But their core live performance is still a 100 percent, unadulterated live performance. Therefore I'm totally on-board with additional sonic enhancements being used under these circumstances.

The drummer is amazing. Like most Pisces was my first introduction and I was like "OK drummer, I see you" lol he started as a piano player and also plays guitar. He's the only member that really has a deep music theory knowledge and I can hear quite a shift since he joined. The previous drummer was very good but Vlad clearly has a vast musical genre of knowledge.

Hello from Cape Cod MA USA. Really enjoying your reviews on Jinjer. I found them about 6 months ago myself. How I never heard of them before is beyond me. Amazing band. If you want to check out some really good older stuff with the drummer before Vlad, who was also insane by the way. He was a little more thrashy in a good way. Two songs you should take a look at. Sit Stay Roll Over Official. It's about 8 songs in one, at a high rate of speed that still baffles me after dozens of listens. The other is Just Another Official video. Heavy as Hell with a chorus that makes me smile every time. Roman, the guitarist, seems to be really featured as well. Have fun, and keep em coming. I'll be watching. Thanks.

I don't know System of a Down much, so I didn't notice, but each time I hear it it reminds me a lot of The Mars Volta (the sound and riffs of the guitar has the same flow and harmony changes).

My dad detested the really heavy stuff (death/black metal etc.) that I used to blast when I was a teenager but Opeth were the first band he was able to get past the screaming/growling and became as a big a fan of them as I was. I think his love for prog rock of the 70s etc. made that much more possible for him. I remember hearing Still Life coming from the living room one morning when getting up for school and thinking wtf!?

Another great reaction JW! Thanks. I don't get the whole tiff about backing tracks. If anything, they are as much a risk as anything else.....if a singers pitch and/or timing is a little off, you can hear that very succinctly when contrasted against the backing tracks. I can only recall a handful of very brief moments where that has happened with Tatiana. It's always very brief and she is able to correct her pitch immediately. She's very aware of her pitch, tone and has excellent control of it. I agree that backing tracks add a nice, extra layer of depth and harmony when used. Cheers.

Every time I see this video or the one for On The Top from the same show I think: "This show looks and sounds way better than the Melbourne show that they used for their live album. Why didn't they use this for that?" It baffles me. Although I think I heard somewhere that some technical (sound? lights?) problems with the Kyiv show are the reason we haven't seen any other videos from it, so who knows? I don't dislike the Melbourne show, but I don't recall thinking any of the performances on it are as definitive as the 2 clips we've seen from Kyiv.

I've been watching several of your videos now and had to click subscribe. :) You provide some great insights and are clearly genuine in your reactions! (Ok a bit of confirmation bias from me maybe esp. regarding Jinjer lol...) Keep up the good work. But if I may make a suggestion, please change the way you title videos back to putting the band/song name first. Now I have to hover over the thumbnail to see which band it is since it's at the end of the title and hidden from view. I guess I should've commented this on the newest video but hopefully you read this anyway. :) Oh, and you should check out Leprous! (I hope I'm not making an a** off myself and you've already done them haha.)

Another great reaction! There's something more satisfying about reactions by other musicians. You pick up on things that also excite me about these songs and a few things I haven yet. Super refreshing. If you haven't already listened to Cotopaxi by the Mars Volta, I think it would make for an interesting reaction. I suspect you'll appreciate the musicianship and composition.

Another brilliant reaction... I'm giving my age away but I think of Vlad as the Ringo Starr of metal. They both play a low kit, both are somewhat understated in their technique while having impeccable timing and tempo. The Beatles producer George Martin did not think much of Ringo at first but later admitted in all the live or studio performances he never heard Ringo make a mistake. Masters of the snare and cymbals...

I think Ringo was an easy target due to the songwriting geniuses he shared his band with. But he was clearly a fundamental piece of the band. Always performing his role perfectly. Not every drummer needs to play like Buddy Rich to be good. 😊🥁

@@JWSoundworks2 He was also left handed and played a right handed kit making some common techniques awkward if not impossible. Like Vlad he had his own unique style. The Beatles were one of the most popular bands in England but when Ringo joined them they became superstars. It seems Vlad likewise filled a missing piece of the puzzle with Jinjer enjoying more and more recognition since Vlad joining the band. I'm hoping their upcoming album takes Jinjer to the next level...

I just saw them live in Boston (epic show!), and I noticed they are getting away from the backing tracks (not 100% but far less), and I think it sounded better. Still effects to fill it out. Their playing live is brutally good. Makes me want to put away my bass.... or go pick it up....

Appreciated your comments about the sound mixing... They are all savant-level musicians, but the mixing is better than 90% of what you hear in a live setting from other bands. Also, it's clear that they play to session over their in-ears and fill with ambience and backing vocals, but we all know that's just a nice-to-have. They would still sound fine without it.

I'd like to point out the existence of harmonizer tech, and it eliminates the need for backing vocals when you want to create vocal harmonies. I can't say that they use it for sure, but I think they might have a bit of that and stereo/chorus on the vocals sometimes. Vocalists can use effects just like guitarists. Her deep growl and singing voice are obviously organic, but those choice times when you hear a subtle "second voice" or a layer of voices can be triggered pretty easily if someone has hands on the board, since she's obviously not using pedals or an onstage rig. In the studio, it's pretty common, but I've also seen bands use it live when they have their own sound tech.

The backing track police need to give it a rest. There's a big difference between using a track instead of signing and using a backing track instead of paying 2 or 3 people to sing plus travel expenses. It just doesn't make sense.

Yeah I don't get the backing track being offensive to people. It's not like they are pretending to play. It's actually kinda hard to play well with backing tracks. I've seen it live where the backing tracks are out of sync or even off key from the band. Sounds terrible. If it all goes smoothly it's great.

The "controversial" comment refers to many musicians I've worked with that harbour an old school approach to what a rock band should be. And that they're somehow "cheating" by using backing tracks and click tracks. Opinions that seem to mostly be held by people over 40, to be fair. Not an opinion I hold, but I have discussed the point with producers, engineers and musicians and as opinions on it (whether it should be used - not to whether it's being used or not) within the industry tend to vary widely I would consider it a somewhat controversial topic.

I'm happy to add Kyiv to the description 😊. Growing up in the UK we were taught in school it was Kiev. So please forgive me. It seems that on Wikipedia, Kiev is still an accepted spelling of the capital. I even seen that Jinjer's record label also use the English spelling. If you don't mind I will still include it in the description as it will help my viewers find my video (for those who are still using the Anglicised spelling). 🤘
