I love that your example of a "guitarists having real success online" is Davie504, a bass player. That's a level of subtle shade I can only aspire to.

That self confidence thing is very true. I had a revelation near the end of last year about it, and so my new years resolution for 2023 was to just... basically trick myself into believing that I'm actually really cool and confident and capable. Because eventually, it just becomes the truth! Though, as you said- confidence is believing you're just as good as anyone else, not believing you're BETTER than everyone else. Gotta get that balance.

I think something that's overlooked far too often is the fear of trying something new. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something completely different. Try playing a genre you're uncomfortable with, pick up an instrument you're unfamiliar with and learn it, anything like that. The change in perspective will only help you improve as a guitarist. For instance, I started drumming again a few months ago after only playing guitar for over 20 years. My sense of rhythm and timing has already changed noticeably for the better. I'm listening instead of just playing.

You seem like a very cool, balanced, decent human being. I can't believe I'm just now finding your channel this week. smh It absolutely mystifies me that I watch so much guitar content on YT, and have for the last 3 years, and your videos have never popped up in my feed. I suppose better late than never. You put out great content (as you already know). I'm buying a Guitar Samurai t-shirt to support your channel. Keep up the great work! There are people out there in the world, especially musicians, who've never had an adult who cared enough about them to give them the advice you offer here in this video. Thank you for being a source of goodness in the world. Merry Christmas (if you're celebrating) and many warm wishes for a fulfilling and healthy 2024~

I think one of the biggest steps I took when playing is when I learned that solos aren't scary. One of the things I always tell people too when I notice them just shrugging it of as a "it's a solo, I can't play it". Even some hard sounding solos are easy so no reason not to try it out, you'll always get better from it anyway.
@yobrethren Жыл бұрын
I think it's because actually composing a fitting and somewhat iconic solo can be difficult, and people project that on themselves. Like wow, it's gonna be scary trying to keep up with that iconic and awesome solo, but then you actually play through the entire Californication or whatever music/solo you wanted to play and it clicks. A fact that sometimes gives comfort to me is that a lot of those solos aren't their best from the artist (not always the case, but still). As Sammy G said, just snowball it, it's not hard

All good points, Sammy G. For me as a father of 3, finding the balance (ie time) to do the other 8 things has been the most difficult especially since I'm coming at the guitar from the opposite direction that you did (had kids 1st...picked up the guitar 2nd).

Please please is there any way to mute the backing track of jangly random-notes piano? it's horribly distracting. I just want to hear your voice, not a backing track while you are talking. In the end I had to mute everything and watch with just the captions on.

What I want to know is: after putting all that time and work into becoming a well rounded musician how does it feel to know that your guitar playing isn't really the primary focus of what makes you money? I mean, you sometimes play guitar on here, but mostly you talk about music. The guitar playing isn't really essential to the channel. Does that bother you?

@ZTRCTGuy Жыл бұрын
To point #1, that's the point... If you could fake the mentality, you don't have confidence issues in the first place. In order to fake something, you need to know how something works in theory, and if you have confidence issues, you simply don't. How do people ''fake'' a mentality? Mentality cannot be faked, ngl chief I don't think that's how it works. At least not for everyone.

Please forgive a little word of unsolicited advice. You seem to have succumbed to the dismal editing trend of interspersing little random clips throughout your talk that are intended to hilariously underscore the point you're making. They're not hilarious and the points are solid enough not to need underscoring. To go back to your point number 1, if you have enough confidence in the points you're making and in their presentation, you wouldn't need artificial sweeteners, especially trite ones like the intercutting of "funny" clips.
