TSURIDAIKO - large hanging barrel drum
TAIKO - comes in various sizes and is used to play a variety of musical genres
String
KOTO - 13-stringed zither.; made of Paulownia wood and about 2 meters long.
SHAMISEN - fretless stringed instrument performed through plucking.
BIWA - short-necked fretted lute often used in narrative story telling.
Wind
SHAKUHACHI - famous flute made from bamboo; has 4 or 5 finger holes on the front face and a thumbhole on the rear face; imported from China for Gagaku
NOKAN - parallel bamboo flute; only melodic instrument used in noh.
HICHIRIKI - double reed Japanese flute used as one of two main melodic instruments in Japanese gagaku music
SHO - Japanese free reed musical instrument that was introduced from China during the Nara Period
SHINOBUE - also called takebue in the context of Japanese traditional arts; Japanese transverse flute or fue that has a high pitched sound
RYUTEKI - “dragon flute” a Japanese transverse flute made of bamboo
