What Ryan did is very impressive but if someone put in the hours per day, pretty much anyone can do it...I prefer to play chords myself and the way I'm able to remember how to play some songs is by visualisation and shapes the chords make. It's not easy but with any instrument repetition and practice is the key :)

Gosling's character was right, jazz music is different every night because they are improvising a good amount of the song, at the very least during solos. The other musicians will often play the chords and rhythm of a part of the song while one solos, and they pass around the solo basically in no predetermined way but in a way that still makes sense musically
@SophiaPhannn

Of course it also depends on what kind of jazz you mean. Jazz has gone through a lot of different forms. In any case, whichever kind of jazz you're talking about, no matter what Gosling's character said or rather whined, jazz is not dying.

Some clarifications on jazz, for anyone curious. Most of the time there is a rehearsed part, called the head, which is the main melody/intro to the whole thing. After that, the rest of the band start improvising music on the spot based on what the melody was. It's very much freestyle and flowing. Great reaction btw!

The beauty is in its simplicity. The movie had a simple story but the overall cinematography was absolutely beautiful along with the chemistry between the two leads. The lighting was stellar. The soundtrack was catchy. The editing was top notch. The ending was perfect. The audience got to see them together even if they didn’t end up together. Perfectly bittersweet. I don’t see it as boring whatsoever and enjoyed how toned down it was compared to other musicians. It’s far and above my favorite movie and I’m not even a musical fan.

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling always have this tension between them in every movie they were in together, and I loved it! I simply love their connection, and hope they are in a film together in the future. Now back to the movie.

Skipping the jazz part because so many people already explained it, and with me once being in band and have a sister in a jazz ensemble, what they are saying is true. Now for the ending: I actually really love the ending. I'm glad it went the separate ways in a love story. Not a lot of romance movies would do that unless the characters have a nasty falling out which explains why they split up. If two characters were decent with each other, the movie would have done the typical characters wait for each other and getting back together ending. But no, they actually split them up, live separate lives, and the two are friendly with each other. Bittersweet to some, but that's life, and I wish more romance movies have an ending like this where where the main characters don't get together whether they had a falling out or just grew apart.

This film is by far one of my favorites of all time. The cinematography, spectacular. The color direction is like it’s own evolving character (beginning: bright, vibrant colors to symbolize their hopeful futures ahead of them. as well as their love for one another. middle: darker more neutral tones to rep. their maturity. ending: a combo of both bright and darker colors to show how they’ve morphed and blended together to end up there.). La La Land is what life is REALLY like when you find the right person at the WRONG time in your life. It hurts but it’s a real part of life and there’s no way to romanticize more than this. I just hope that people find their “happily ever afters” without the terrible parts. Life finds a way to make you experience the ugly regardless, so no matter what it’ll always be an equal experience. Thank you for this reaction. When I watched this with my GF at the time, I kinda knew it was foreshadowing and it was. I miss her. But life is that way. No need to feel bad for me, it is what it is and life is a marathon, not a sprint. Thank you for your reaction! It gave me some fuel to believe in that magical love and all that!❤

I like to compare this movie to “signing in the rain”. That film doesn’t rely on its musical numbers and its plot could still work relatively well without them. The epilogue here can be traced directly to the scene in Gene Kelly’s head in “SITR”. City of Stars is the equivalent of Gene Kelly signing Signin in the Rain. It’s is a great movie that doesn’t rely on its numbers to drive the plot. That what makes a film great and not just a musical. That what makes this film better than THE PROM. Which is nice because they are able to use the numbers to enhance the experience, not to carry the film. I have to agree with you on the simplicity of the plot itself but at the same time, I was kinda surprised that they ended it in such a way that the two characters didn't end up together but it's still sort of a 'happy ending.' They got what they both wanted even though they were no longer together because they weren't happy where they were. It's more realistic for their characters. I think in real life, two people need to be supporting each other and give way for the other in order for things to work out. Because she still wanted to fulfill her dreams, she can't because she needs to support him and he can't do the same for her.

It's refreshing to watch a reactor who feels free to be a critic. It seems like other reactors stick with the positive to not offend fans of the movie, which I totally get. But I'm in complete agreement that this movie overall didn't feel like a musical. At times it did, but plot sections would get long and I'd forget, and suddenly there was singing and dancing out of nowhere. This is why I much prefer The Greatest Showman (same composers), which felt much more like a consistent musical.

I think the point is that the plot is simple and relatable, but it all feels very grand with the cinematography. They use a back and forth motion between the two main characters with their current life directions to lead to the eventual split between them. Although it is simple, they are able to pull it off so well. They make a relatively normal story that a lot of people can relate to. I think that as viewers, we expect so much to happen since often times we expect the relationships between the main characters of a movie to be insanely monumental, but in reality, a lot of people in this exact dynamic break up and never come back together, but to us they don’t fall hand in hand because we obviously lack the what could’ve been montage, the music, the chemistry and banter etc
@valynambrose
@valynambrose 10 ай бұрын
A lot of people who are big musical fans didn’t exactly like la la land because of its focus on the cinematography, but I really think that’s what makes it a modern masterpiece. It’s impactful in short scenes, they’re attentive to small details, the characters are passionate but we see that they are affected so heavily by each other and choose to compromise. In a way, mia and Sebastian were similar to jazz composition, as when Sebastian was chasing his melody and passion, mia was compromising, which later switches. When compared to say broadway musicals, I get that the plot is not as grand. But keep in mind la la land is still considered a musical FILM.

What’s funny is something similar happened once on the 105 when there was a huge deadly car crash and ambulances couldn’t get to the cars dueto the traffic and people trying to off-road to go around but getting stuck. I was stuck with the car turned off for 5 hours and people were playing music and dancing between the cars with strangers. I think the problem with them as a couple was that she expects too much from people and is fixed in her ideas not allowing room to change or vary and that he takes his troubles out on other people and has a tendency to come off as sulky. In any case Chicken on a Stick is a terrible name for a jazz club and so are his reasons for wanting to call a club that. I know it's a reference to Charlie Parker but if so then at least call it 'Bird' or 'Yardbird' since those were his actual nicknames.

I appreciate your perspective. For me, I liked this much better than the musicals you refer to for the exact opposite reason you like them. I always hated when 2 people would be having a conversation and all of a sudden they break out into song. It's what I didn't like about musicals. So I understand why you didn't like this movie as well as the musicals you are used to and love. Also, you never get true enjoyment when people build it up so much you get disappointed. What II did really enjoy was your reactions while watching this movie as you try to figure out what was going to break them apart. We of course knew what would happen, so it was interesting to hear your thoughts as you watched. You did a nice job analyzing the agrument they had, but I was hoping to see your reaction as it happened. I was so sad and stunned like she was sitting there! What he said to her really upset me .. "Maybe you liked me when I was on my ass 'cause it made you feel better about yourself". It was so cruel and didn't match what their relationship had been like. But as I think about it now, it was very realistic because that's what people do in an argument - they say something they would really regret saying just to get the upper hand. You did comment you thought it was over the top. Thank you for this video - extremely interesting and thought-provoking.

I loved this reaction so much, it made me think about so many things. At the same time i'm like, of course it's gonna be boring if you alredy heard all the songs and alredy know what's gonna happen, not a minor detail but the main plot and intrigue of the whole film. I imagine myself watching Chicago for the first time in thoes circumstances and it sounds awful, there's no way you can have a journey and experience if you alredy have 80% of it stolen, movies are just meant to be seen for the first time as new production, it has quiet scenes for you to process the music, plot changes etc, cuz it's gonna be all new. Otherwise you only have the visuals left.

Sometimes love isn't enough. It takes more than love but there needs to be a compatibility in both parties decision to fully commit to the relationship. Both are so ambitious and they both need to fulfill their goals but if one partner is not fulfilled in their lives, one can't truly be supportive. They've decided they just weren't right for each other although they're in love.

If you have to sacrifice what you really truly want out of life for another person, you're going to end up resenting them for that and the relationship will either fall apart completely or be deeply unfulfilling. Especially if one partner gets to continue what they wanted in life while the other has to give it up as a sacrifice because both of their life plans go in vastly different directions.

The saddest part of the ending is… in her mind, if they stayed together, he didn’t get his dream.
@doloreseason5686
@doloreseason5686 Ай бұрын
That's why I believe the ending is HIS fantasy, not hers or a shared fantasy. First of all, I believe he's playing his heart to her. I believe HIS dream changed somewhere along the way and he didn't realize it until it was too late. All the changes to what actually happened are changes that HE could (and in his mind should) have made. Although he got the club, he lost the girl. In his fantasy, he would have gladly given up that dream for the chance to still be with her. He would have been satisfied playing in other clubs as he followed her to wherever her dreams took her. In the end, he's happy for her, and lets her know by the smile and nod.

Gosling did have lots of dance training as a kid (google some of the videos, so cute). Emma had done some musicals, but no heavy dancing. BTW, this movie has MANY homages to MGM musicals and the numbers being intergrated into the plot are very much a part of those musicals. That lighting is very Vincent Minnelli. If you wait 4 years, you'll always be underwhelmed by movies people raved about! 😜

10:44 What Goslling's character is saying about Jazz or at least that style of jazz is very true. My dads a jazz enthusiast and I love jazz as well. But none of that made me like Gosling's character.

Wow I haven't watched this movie since it came out and I remember I had just broken up with a Sebastian and was cringing through the whole movie when I heard the name. Another fun time, I had broken up with a Simon soon before Bridgerton was released and was cringing through every episode as well. I have to start picking boyfriends with more unusual names haha

The scene where the audition gets rudely interrupted happened to Ryan Gosling. And the actress who asks for a refund is played by the director, Damien Chazelle's wife. And tbh, Sebastian is such an aggressive pretentious elitist douche I feel like Mia dodged a bullet by not ending up marrying him.

I love this movie but I don't like the ending with the what if our life was like this thing. Like if you didn't want a perfect ending to a romance then they could of just left it after she sees seb again and they nod like that would of been fine
