Andrew Gibbons, Classical Pianist and Feldenkrais Practitioner in New York City describes the process of discovering whole body awareness from a Feldenkrais perspective and how to produce better musical sound by finding greater skeletal support in sitting.
This video offers a mini-demonstration of key principles to be aware of in sitting that will give lightness to your arms and hands. These key principles can be applied to more than just playing piano or using a musical instrument, but in any with any endeavour that requires sitting and needing the use of your hands (computer use, driving, knitting, writing...etc.)

So interesting. We can also apply this wisdom to desk sitting, spending a long time studying or sitting in front of the computer. I'll definitely keep this in mind because I often find myself storing a huge amount of tension in my neck & shoulders after a long time sitting

Nice work, extremely helpful to see the importance of being more skeletal with one's playing posture.

My life changed when I joined a feldenkrais ATM class. It became an addiction. It didn't just transform the way I play, but the way I use my body in daily activities. I started formal piano lessons when I was four yrs old. I was never taught by any teacher how to move efficiently. I developed a lot of strain in my neck, shoulders and wrists, which caused me to stop playing altogether. I have been going to classes for ten years now and I use the technique in my teaching. It's true many professional pianists have no idea how to sit or move correctly

Good video and clear presentation .. bravo Irene! And Andrew! Of course some people will think this video is about arm positioning (as opposed to hand positioning) but don't worry about it, they didn't get the point of the video ;-)

I can't agree that a slightly outstretched arm is bad. I see too many pianists sitting far too close and being cramped. They have to press hard to get any big sounds. The thing about an outstretched arm is that it's hard work in thin air. However, with proper connection to the keyboard via physical legato it isn't hard work at all. The arm can be hung suspended between two points rather than simply held up as if in thin air.

The piece is one of Erik Satie's "Gnossienne No. 1"...it was beautifully featured in the movie "Man on Wire" about Philippe Petit's walk across the wire strung between the world trade centers.
