@lovesrock100 oh yes. Nearly the entire cast would watch from the wings during "Gethsemane". Night after night he hit those high notes. Very friendly and down to earth, but everyone was so in awe no one approached him, and he couldnt party afterward with the rest of us because he had to take care of himself. Very disciplined. I wish it had been possible to know him better. He remains a hero. Ive worked with many great actors and singers since. The were regular, normal people with skill and talent. Ted wasn't regular or normal. People used to bring their babies to be blessed by him after the show. He was uncomfortable with that but said a prayer to make the parents happy. I think we all sort of felt like he was Jesus. (People didnt ise profanity or tell dirty jokes around him and when he arrived at the theater, even when you didnt see him, you felt hos presence and the atmosphere changed.) I cant believe how long ago it was. Cant believe Im 62 now! Like it was yesterday.

i agree. he's got the voice and he put the emotion into the songs that made you feel and understand where he (jesus) was feeling. all the actors in the 1973 movie were perfect in their roles. i can't imagine anyone else in those roles. what made it more amazing, was the fact that they were all novices (with the exception of barry dennen) in acting, especially in a movie.

@@marylou931 I am in self quarantine on the other side of the continent on Cape Breton Island Nova Scotia. As a sinner who knows that the Loving God had to fix mankind or the wages of sin had condemned humanity for the evil we did in the sight of God. I found the beauty of His plan at the Cross when I first understood the Words "It is Finished.," To hear our Salvation presented with the power & sorrow of JCSS, in such a contemporary way, allowed me to come to terms with why I should choke up while I tried to figure out " How to Love Him." I have listened to Mary singing "I don't Know how to love Him with thankfulness that such a beautiful voice & person could understand the lyrics as much as JCSS did & import them into my Soul. The Cast of JCSS took a risk in the days when most young folks were headed in the opposite direction. JCSS, showed a value in life that was being pushed aside by man . They kept Him alive in days when it was difficult to do so. You helped a lot of Souls find Christ in such a way that we do not fear death while being wise enough to know He told us in the first Books of the Bible that self isolation saves lives long before the Microscope saw it's fist virus or bacteria. PS. I hope to see all of JCSS's cast in God's choir someday.

Gillan will always be my favorite 'Jesus' performance but Neely has immortalized it for sure. Would love to know why this song wasn't in the original version. Did Rice and Webber add this later for the movie? One of the most beautiful songs ever written IMHO especially given the context of the story. I played Judas in a college (Stephens College) production of JCSS in the early 80's and it is to this day the crowning achievement in my life. I currently live in KC, MO but go back to visit my hometown of St. Louis and I sing the whole musical, all parts, on the ride. The musical is timeless because the story is timeless.
