It's not just that, in this moment Jesus is telling Judas that he is destined to die as part of god's plan. You can see the profound understanding on Judas's face as Judas also understands his grim role in this divine play. His expression conveys sadness, adoration, and awe at the almighty all at once while Jesus is stoic and statuesque, just as we're used to seeing him in paintings after his death. All of this is meant to convey to the audience that both Jesus and Judas have vague understandings that their lives are not their own, but part of something bigger that will kill both of them for the greater good.

The thing that I really like about Ted Neeley's response to Judas (Carl Anderson) is that he was teaching and he remained compassionate. Every revival I've seen with this song has Jesus getting sort of annoyed or angry and I don't think that's him.

@@willkelly9726 Mary Magdalen is anointing Jesus in this scene since she won't be able to anoint his body at the tomb. Jesus is omniscient & would be annoyed that Judas - of all people - is begrudging Mary of this honor - being that Judas will be the person to betray Jesus & lead to his death

@@sgabig ok that makes some sense. I just always thought the line "surely you're not saying we have the resources to save the poor from there lot, there will be poor always pathetically struggling, look at the good things you've got " seemed out of character like Jesus was deflecting what Judas was saying. @sgabig Жыл бұрын
@@willkelly9726 That lyric is a close paraphrase of the Bible - I always interpreted that line to mean you will & should always serve the poor but that Jesus 's earthly ministry was short so Judas should focus on learning as much as he can with the time available. You make a great point. As much as I love the Arena Tour of this show (with Ben Forster, Mel C, Tim Minchin...) --- I noticed exactly what you said... Jesus became very annoyed with Judas during this song, and never showed the compassion that is seen here -- which is very touching and effective. Agree. I grew up listening to this soundtrack and always listen to it fully a few times a year but, weirdly, have never seen the movie itself. Watching this scene between the actors adds a whole new layer and meaning to what's being sung. When Jesus says, "... Think while you still have me. Move while you still see me. You'll be lost and you'll be sorry when I'm gone ..." the look on Judas' face reveals a dawning realization that Jesus knows something he doesn't -- that this is all coming to an end very soon.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's music is inspired. Mary's melody - with lovely chords, mostly major chords - is sweet and in a downward, descending, easing motion. Then Judas's, and Jesus's melodic lines are ascending and aggressive, challenging, the chords in the music, bold and solid - suddenly attacking in the natural minor of the tonic. Feminine, Masculine. Major, Minor. Amazing contrast.

When I hear people say money is wasted in building churches to worship the Lord Jesus. I now think of the words of Judas. We all have a little Judas in us if we do not worship. Lord of lords. King of kings…❤️❤️❤️

I was 14 years old and in Junior High. The band director came in and asked to speak with me. Seemed the Junior College was putting on this play and needed a drummer for the orchestra. I was so honored to play for 3 weeks.

Every year around Easter I watch this scene. It always brings me to tears. The greatest scene ever registered on film.

So talented, fantastic voices, but above all embodied their roles perfectly, this is what makes this movie so special, one of my top three GOAT musicals.

This scene is profound Jesus has been away from man for 2,000 years and we are truly lost without Him - the world longs for your return Lord

I listened to the other versions of this song..... yeah this is by far the best and strongest. John Legend held his own, but Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson! Yes Indeed

It's so strange, when you view Mary's song through the eyes of a lover it feels off, but if you look at it through the eyes of a worried mother it makes sense

I absolutely hear this through the eyes of a lover. She’s a calming balm trying to relieve in the midst of pressure from life (represented by Judas)

I sing this song to my own lover (fiancé) when he is worried. Is not the role of a significant other to be the voice of reason, calm and quiet in the storm of our loved one’s lives?

One of the great things about JCSS, is that it humanizes all the characters, they don’t include the miracles/supernatural stuff, they focus on a man just trying yo make the world a better place and his followers and the disagreements between them, as well as the complicated political situation at the time with Judea being occupied by the Romans It just makes it so that everyone, religious or non religious can really appreciate the story which itself is a beautiful and tragic story

Norm Jewison just finished directing Fiddler and then started on JCSuperstar. Love his incredible ability and vision for bringing the human side of Jesus to the screen. And the music...!! So special. Everything's alright.

The best cast ever for this production! Maybe I am nostalgic, butI have the album ( yes, vinyl) and the DVD. I saw the movie when it first came out and saw Ted Neeley onstage at the Fox in Atlanta in this role. I did sorely miss Carl Anderson as Judas, however ( and the rest of the original cast, too).

I completely agree: this cast was never bettered. Carl Anderson's portrayal of Judas is especially memorable.

This brings tears to my eyes. From the intensity coming out of the verses of Carl then Ted, balanced out with the calming chorus by Yvonne. How she sings the chorus first to Jesus to calm him then basically repeats the same to Judas trying to calm him as well. Seeing Judas and Jesus clench hands then slowly break apart, its as if they both know their fates have been sealed. Chills. Every. Single. Time. My God. This entire musical is a masterpiece.

I was today years old when I first heard this song! Daughter was watching a modern version of this and this number happened to be playing. So beautiful! Such a lovely song, sung by such a unique voice. Just love it so, exquisite!

Every time I re-watch this movie, I either gain a deeper understanding, or I see another perspective from this scene, but from the first time I saw that look at 2:20, I've never stopped thinking about it.

What I love most about this song, well firstly, despite what Mary is pleading, Jesus does not, or can not, close his eyes, but what I love is that at the end of the song, it becomes almost mystical chantlike.

I just watched this the other night on Amazon . The way they preserved the beautiful cinematic elements it looks like the film was made yesterday. Awesome movie, awesome show, awesome cast.
