From the documentary series about Band Maid, it says that Miku, the main lyricist, is playing a lot with syllables in the Japanese lyrics, removing a couple if needed. Japanese is quite flexible as a language, words are omitted if the meaning can be understood from the context. Beautiful language for poetry and song writing.

6:26 - Yes you're more-or-less right. It's not just about the number of syllables, but they do often select Japanese or English for a particular line based on what fits best. There are other considerations too. For example their lead singer wanted their power ballad Daydreaming to be mostly in Japanese just because she finds it easier to sing smoothly in Japanese. And they have four songs entirely in English, three of which involved collaborations with western musicians or producers. But I'll echo the recommendation for From Now On, where you won't have to worry about that because it's an instrumental!

Great reaction and analysis. This song is the ending song for the new anime "Grendizer U" (airing in Japan and some parts of Asia only) and is a re-telling of an old anime from the 1970's, basically a mecha anime war series about three star crossed lovers in their fight to save earth from invading aliens and the lyrics are directly related to the story line. As for the subtitles, the band and their staff produce the subs to match as closely as possible to the Japanese parts and they do write the lyrics in both Japanese and English, sometimes based on what fits the song best and sounds the best. Thanks for your reaction to Band-Maid.

As for the magnificent Band Maid, try listening to "I Still Seek Revenge", "Without Holding Back" (instrumental), "From Now On" (instrumental), "Hate?" So the idea that "hey we need to do this in about 3 minutes" is spot on. This was written to be the outro of a new animated tv show called Grendizer U. I think they now have five songs for anime shows (including one currently on Netflix) and one written for a live action detective drama in Japan.

Heyy..very nicee..dude, Band-Maid is my fav band of all time - I was a die-hard Metal-Head in my youth but even back then I secretly loved all genres from classical to jazz to reggae..so now a bit older, I still have a preference to Rock and Metal but have now gravitated to J-Rock/Metal stuff and Band-Maid is at the top of the mountain for me. Like you said there's tons of Japanese talent out there I love lovee many other J-Rock/Metal Bands (Babymetal, Nemophila, Lovebites..any one of these bands will keep you busy for the rest of your musical life mann..). One band that I'd have liked if you enumerated along with the other Japanese bands is Nemophila -- maybe the most _metal_ of all these bands that have hit the reaction circuit internationally in the last few years. At concerts, Saiki and Miku talk to the audience during breaks. Saiki does Q&A's and she really tries to converse with the audience 'naturally' without referring to her cell phone app too often - you can almost see the gears turning as she translates on the fly, and she really enjoys doing this.

Why English? I think you’re almost tight. Some bands do it thinking random English will attract more fans from the English music market. Some bands do it to express colloquialisms that express something in English expressed differently in Japanese, or as direct translations of Japanese to English to express Japanese colloquialisms which might sound cool in English. Some do it because English (with syllables ending with a consonant sound) breaks up the sound of Japanese (what syllables that almost always end in a vowel sound.) And yeah, in some cases the flow of English might make more sense than the flow of Japanese.
@KittyKarenpoo2 ай бұрын
So, going down your list of Japanese bands, let me introduce three that are not on the list that definitely ought to be: Wagakki Band (the most interesting band on the planet): A Letter with no Name: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4OxoWV7pLN1Z7s One Ok Rock (one of the most polished rock bands in the world): Take me to the Top: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpXGpWydf9Rpi5Y Doll$boxx: (the spin-off from Gracharic Spin and Unlucky Morphius): Fragrance: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aX-aq2eYh5eJlZY Otherwise, Band Maid is prime choice, particularly if live (every song, live). Best songs (LIVE) are Domination, Daydreaming, Hate, Freedom, Play, Manners with Black Hole. Domination: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5PcgnaAo5ulj8k Hanabie is great. Advise Hanabie live in Taiwan, to see them do their thing outside of the fake studio environment: Hannabie in Taiwan: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIC1i3utfat_epI Exactly right about the tone of the voice. Saiki is a very good vocalist, and it is not about range. It's about tone and attitude. In fact, Miku is a better choice for high notes, but not a rock voice at all, thin and what you'd usually expect from a Japanese female vocalist. What you missed was a good dose of Misa on bass and Akane on drums, here, because this song kind of sits in one pocket and doesn't have range. I'd put this song about #50 on my list of favorite Band Maid songs, so not a great opening for you, but a sample of what they do, leaving room for discovery of the genius of this group, yet to be experienced. As for fast, the fastest Band Maid song is Black Hole. That comes in a 2-song live set with Manners, which is a great contrast.
