I think being vegan isn't something that can be done over night. It's like any change in habit where you have to slowly substitute things for others a day at a time. I think a lot of people are closed off to alternative foods for many reasons, but it also has to do with the fact that they've been eating a certain way for a loonnnnggg time. I can't see myself going vegan, but I have a lot of respect for pescatarian, vegetarian and vegan eaters alike. I'm glad he touched on that.

Moby i like you and your music and your way of life But please please where is the respect when someone eat something that kills him/her (meat is one the main reason of cancer and many other diseases and it causes of acidosis) and that hurt other species? SO NOT ONLY THEY DO NOT RESPECT THEMSELF BY EATING SOMETHING THAT KILL THEM BUT ALSO THEY CHOSE TO KILL AND EAT CARCASS We do not need meat to be alive! We need more celebrities to raise their voice but not like "half half": "yes it is good to be vegan but others do what they want, i respect that" No they do not do what they want they have to respect Life

@AirSimming Nobody is denying the fact that meat is a lot more packed than veggies. That's why meat and other high fat/protein foodstuffs are high on the food pyramid. Eat only little of them. It's very easy to overeat/indulge in meat compared to veggies. Meat has much more calories and high-danger nutrients compared to veggies. That does not mean the consumption of meat itself is wrong and unhealthy, nor does it mean that some of the essential nutrients provided by it are useless.

There has been interesting work with plants and how they react to stimuli. Also interesting is they can scream from being burnt and yet when a stem is cleanly cut with a knife it grows back with more tenacity. Cutting necrid leaves off a house plant can encourage a better flow of it's internal resources. The secret life of plants and other works detail this. There is however every indication that for flesh creatures a cut is much more tramautic.

Rabbits back on the menu after flood isolation Friday, 21/01/2011 Floods have forced rabbit stew back on the menu in regional Queensland. Southern Queensland melon farmer Dennis Dieckmann, along with Sudanese workers and Irish backpackers, were isolated by flooding near the town of Chinchilla. Food was running low, and after several days of scrounging onions from the farm, it was decided meat was needed.

@terminsane but they don't have any sensory system to tell them "oh no, my branch was cut off" as opposed to a fauna that has a sensory system that tells it "oh no, my leg's chopped off". and as i said above, it's the farming that renders it well or not, NOT the killing itself.

@ljyong21 1. I'm a fruitarian and I do not take pills (so much for "requires supplemental pills for it to work") 2. The human body is self sufficent, which explains the more and more cases of breatharians popping up in the media, an efficent body (i.e not damaged by the animal products society tells us we need for B12) will produce it's own B12. While this is common knowledge with vitamin D this for some reason shocks all those against vegan/fruitarian/liquidarian/breatharian diets.

Being vegan makes me feel like I'm doing something positive for animals all the time, even when I'm just walking down the street. It is a great feeling. By refusing animal products and voting with my dollar, I am saying no to someone who was paid to beat the animals, kick them, skin them alive, or any number of other violent, invasive, exploitive treatments that would make anybody freak out in anger if they saw it done to their mom, or wife, or sister, or pet.

@Aurelius27x Awareness in relation to pain and suffering as we(sentient beings) understand it, yes. There is simply no possibility for a plant to remotely be able to process any stimuli. This is a good analogy we use with our biology students. 1) Do you agree that animals like dogs and cats should receive pain-killing drugs prior to surgery? 2) Do you believe that plants should receive pain-killing drugs prior to pruning?.

I never said the lion was evil / cruel. The point I was trying to make was that all animals including us do what we have to to survive even if it does seem rotten and nasty. The fact is that You and I are omnivores. Our natural diet should consist of healthy amounts of Meat, grain and vegetables/foot. This has been our diet since before our earliest ancestors climbed down from the trees and if you want to live on a natural healthy diet this is what you have to eat too.

@BiohazardBunney Just from a pro's / con's site. "A major concern for those who subsist solely on plant foods has been vitamin B12. While meat, milk and eggs have ample vitamin B12 , plants contain none. Vitamin B12 deficiency can have serious consequences such as early dementia, lack of coordination, forgetfulness, nerve dysfunction, memory loss, disorientation, difficulty with concentration, and difficulty with one’s balance when walking." Why not just eat as nature intended?

@terminsane but in the end there are 2 main reasons for being vegan: 1. u feel better. no point in turning vegan if it makes u feel worse. 2. u're not supporting the farming of animals. from most perspectives that i've heard the farming of animals takes WAY MORE precedence over the killing of animals.

@Seedr0 For that "Plants can't feel pain" argument, I already wrote a shit load of points down there in the comments. Basically, YES they do possess a nervous system, and have the functional equivalent of 'pain'. Not being able to move away from a source of pain proves nothing. A paraplegic in a burning house can't escape on his own either. Pain or suffering is not a quantifiable thing. If you are willing to ignore the pain of some life forms for a practical reason, why shouldn't others?

@mysticwoodfaery Meat production IS less efficient than regular crops. However, crops require MUCH more land to produce. If we hypothetically stopped all meat consumption, than we would need to switch to soy for general protein source, which means we probably need much more soy than we do now, requiring a large land mass, which will probably come from South America, causing further deforestation. My argument still stands.

@angbayemay B12? Milk, yogurt, or even supplements, though that isn't my bag. I know, milk and yogurt are dairy, but the cow lives, and keeps living, and dies naturally, as long as organic milk is utilized. Calcium is easily obtainable through a wide variety of sources, not only in meat. Also, it's irrelevant to find something that grows everywhere. Food can be shipped from place to place. Sure, we will always have meat. I'm not a vegetarian myself. But portions can be drastically

@PrincessChronicles From a medial stand point, you can not tell a person's nutritional state by looking at them, a complete blood panel must be taken. Malnutrition is likely to affect more than just your facial complexion, but mood, and behavior. These people do not seem malnourished from a physiological stand point.

Our stomach pH is between 4 and 5 when digesting food, but an omnivore like a bear, weasel, or raccoon’s stomach has a pH of 1 or lower with food in it. There are many other features omnivores have that humans do not, but I'll stay within the 500 character limit. Even if a raccoon ate only nuts, seeds, and fruits it would still have the classification of omnivore because it is a classification based upon immutable anatomical features and not behavioral or cultural habits.
@BiohazardBunney
@BiohazardBunney 13 жыл бұрын
@Zeratchi I never said organic farming was not important, it was just off topic. I personally believe we are herbivores, based on our similarities to herbivores in our physiology. B12 is simply not on our plants because they are too highly cleaned, but I'm not going to eat dirt, so I take a vitamin. veganism is not about perfection you still seem stuck on that. It's about doing whatever I have to, to not support animal exploitation. if that doesnt work for YOU, thats not my problem.

@terminsane given that something has to trigger a plant to regrow a branch. but they have adapted to be continuously eaten from (it's happened over millions of years). the reason why an animal pains when it dies is because u can't just snap a branch off and hope for the best. if u snap a limb off, it dies. needless to say that the killing of anything isn't cruel if pain ends quickly.

@xATOMICxDROPx Not quite, there are leftover plant materials cows can digest well but we cannot. There are plant foods that are easier on us if slightly steamed, starchy roots or beans for example. We eat a variety of meats, some raw, but most cooked to avoid bacteria or to make them more palatable. The cooking changes the protein chains. We are the only species to cook meat, strange considering we have no long incisor teeth, rather our "canine" teeth which many herbivores also posses,are

@libed91.. Was tested after a lifetime of eating meat, it wouldn't pass the US standard for pork. Your grandparents have/had the right idea. If one is omnivorous, one must eat meat in moderation. But that does go with everything. I've never heard that saying before, a very wise one by the way. I think the other factors include the chemicals in meat production, the unsanitary conditions the animals are kept in (who you eat meat filled with crap?), and the changes in genes brought by the chems.

@BiohazardBunney I do as intended, what is natural. We're equipped with an all-purpose set of ivories equally suited to liver and onions. Humans are omnivores such as pigs, badgers, bears, coatis, hedgehogs, opossums, skunks, sloths and squirrels (a lot of other animals as well). That is the true reality.

The assurance of meat to the consumer I believe is also helping drive faster the unsustainable trend of overpopulation. People feel safer at all times of the year when they can just go to the store for food, come home and make babies after dinner. Then begins the vicious cycle of more meat to feed more ppl to get more meat to feed more ppl we are now in.

@ljyong21 ""My instinct tells me..." is not a good point in any argument." It's an absolutely terrible point in an argument. However, I don't think I used it to back my argument. I used it merely to state when and where I draw the line, which in my eyes is really the only way to draw that line, instinctively. Which leads me to an easy answer of this question: "Isn't that enough?" If you think it's enough (or the theoretical person in question); Yes. Yes it is.

@ljyong21 Pets means animals you have keep in your house, like cats or dogs,... So, 25 Megatons (about 27%) go to livestock, meaning products containing soy beans going directly to us. 1 Megaton (1%) to pets and the rest , 65 Megatons (about 71%) goes to something else, which means animal food (excluding pets in houses). So, read my first previous post again, where I stated that it is about 70%, quite close, isn't it. ;)

your half right but i think you got it a bit backwards. Like some other omnivores our stomach acid does have a low ph. this limits the amount of meat we can eat and is why we have to rely on other sources of food as well. we can still eat meat and eat it raw but only small amounts. (except fish we can eat as much fish as we like. ever try sushi?) but then we discovered fire and started cooking our meat this broke down the protein for us so we could eat more.

"Try to get them in the proper ratio" ideally a 1-1 or better ratio would be ideal seeing as you want more omega3 to counteract the fact omega6 is inflammatory. Meat based diets have 3-6 ratios from 1-5 to 1-40. Yes I have acknowledged grains are bad, I'm an advocate of fruitarianism and will reap its benefits for the rest of my life.

I think whether or not we respond well to a vegan diet, or diets comprising of varying degrees of vegan components will really depend on how our system processes it. (The same is probably true regarding new or old information, depending on where you get them since the veracity of it's sources can be debatable these days) Truth is, what works for you might not work for others and vice versa. We just have to be mindful and respectful of that.

Others do that too. Plenty of people eat meat and thank the animals that provided them such gift. Isn't that enough?

@MindofaJedi Can't help it, one more thing, someone who consumes no animal products is called a person on a plant based diet, not a Vegan.

@Maxaker67 i personally come from a rural area, and i see all my meat get slaughtered before me. I don't eat that industrial garbage which most people do. and no matter what people say, meat will ALWAYS be part of a balanced diet, remember what your grade 1 health teacher told you? there are other ways to acquire protein yes, but meat is the best way when consumed in proper amounts.
