The good thing about Deep Purple (apart from being one of the great hard rock bands of all time with a superb discography) is that it connects you to other artists and bands, like Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio, or Whitesnake with David Coverdale. This album were this song comes from was written and recorded in December at the end of 1971 and it was recorded in the out of season grand hotel overlooking the Swiss Alps.. and that’s were singer Ian Gillan gets his inspiration from for this song. Also if you listen to smoke on the water also from this album it tells you about about the making of this album machine head.

They were home sick they had just toured America and than went to Switzerland to make the album Machine Head and all they really wanted to do was go home and see family, friends and get home. They did it to themselves...they wanted to record in a more tax friendly place I guess Great Britain was taxing their work quite heavily. One of them said Smoke on the Water makes him a million dollars a year it was his retirement although I don't think anyone in that band ever retired except for Jon Lord may he rest in peace.
