Avi usually only puts the deepest of his bass notes in the harmonies and background on his solo work. Some of his songs are in the bass range, but not his lowest notes. Avi does a really good job of making you pay attention to the lyrics in his songs. It's one of the things I love about him. I hope you react to more.
@charlottevan_8 Жыл бұрын
Avi's training as an operatic basso profundo does shine in many of his solo works. He's said that on a good day, he has a 5 octave range, on others just 4. Just 4... The video was purposefully kept minimalistic, so that viewers would be, as you said, "forced" to be listeners. And here, in his own words, is the meaning behind the song -- “The world has seen so much hurt. We are constantly bombarded by tragedy after tragedy all over the world. Current times are no different and hit especially deep for me and for many. All we can do as a human race is heal and move forward. This is a song about exactly that. The human condition. It was written, produced, arranged, and sung to be a cathartic experience for the listener. I hope people are able to have a good cry, heal and keep moving forward. I hope it is a balm for the soul in these tough times. After all is said and done my deepest hope for my music is that it can truly help people.”

From time to time Avi will get up in the morning and livestream something from his cabin deep in the forests of Tennessee. Here is one of those times he did just that and took one of his songs and lowered it. Avi Kaplan Otherside (Kaplan) lower version. He is not using is basso so much these days but in this song. he once again shows off his range. Avi is a classically/operatically trained singer who did not want to be an opera singer. He was actually hired by the Los Angeles Opera house one day before Scott Hoying contacted him to sing with the group in the A Capella singoffs. He chose PTX and of course they won the competition. Avi remained with the group for 6 years before leaving. He is the brainchild and co-founder of A Capella Academy. This Academy interviews youth from all over the world and brings in the best of the best. Because some of the youth are not able financially to attend, Avi gets online once a year and takes requests for donations to go toward paying for those who cannot pay. Grammy winner Ben Bram and Rob Deitz are the other founders. Ben has been one of the major arrangers for Pentatonix and has stated how much he enjoyed arranging to show off Avi's vocal abilities. Avi can boom or sing a gentle lullaby. He is also an overtone singer which add whistle notes to his register. On one Christmas song PTX did, he made his voice sound like organ chimes. Thank you for reacting to him. \

I haven't heard anything I haven't enjoyed from Avi. He is often deeper in some of his shorts if you're looking for some quick fixes. I still love to listen to his early stuff too. Sage and Stone, Song for the Seeker, Field and Pier ... They are pieces of art. There is also a sublime live version of Full Moon from the KZbin space you should hear. For a more upbeat Avi listen to his take on House of the Rising Sun or Hey Ya! Or his original - Sweet Adeline. If I don't stop there I'll list everything. It's all worth your time.

@shirleymoffat3338 Жыл бұрын
The advantage of having a wide vocal range is that you are free to place a song in whatever part of your voice is best suited to the song. He tends to sing his ballads in his higher register 'He Don't Love You Right', 'Quarter Past Four' (as Avriel and the Sequoias) and 'All is Well' for example. He uses his baritone range for the majority of his songs and saves the bass for the heavy hitters like 'Change on the Rise' and 'Chains'. Some of his lowest notes are saved to be used as part of the vocal layering he uses a lot - in 'Change on the Rise' he uses some bass cannon in the second half of the song. I appreciated the musical knowledge you brought to this reaction. If you enjoyed Daniel Ellsworth's piano on this, please listen to 'When I'm a Fool' Live at Sunset Sound', where he, Avi and a few very talented studio musicians create a sound that couldn't be more different to this. Please continue to react to Avi - he has such a lot of wonderful music to offer.

I really enjoy your reactions, having no musical knowledge myself ( outside of knowing I like or don't like something) it is really nice to learn what I am hearing. I agree with all of the pother suggestions particularly All is Well but would love to see you do all 3 versions and compare / contrast them. Avi likes to "cover" his own music and he released 3 versions of All is Well, 1 the studio version a duet with co0writer Joy Williams, 2 an acoustic version for the 7 Layers Sessions and finally 3 for the Live at Sunset Sound EP. Another gem that has not been mentioned for Avi's beautiful lower register is a duet with Peter Hollens Black is the Color of my True Loves Hair.

Avi's music often feels like a meditation to me... this one, for sure. I love when the dynamics of the music reflect the message in the lyrics, and especially when a reactor recognizes it. In this one, the lack of resolution. Everyone has their own favourite Avi solo. Men in particular are often moved by "Change on the Rise" (you will probably enjoy his strong bass in there), but I'm smitten by his solo performance of "All Is Well," recorded in a little church in Utrecht. The lyrics are heartfelt, and the extraordinary timbre of Avi's voice is enhanced by the acoustics in the church. There are a few versions of this song, including a duet with Joy Williams, but the 7 Layers Sessions recording of Avi with only his guitar has something special. So happy to see you checking out Avi's solo work. Your analysis always offers food for thought.

I’m thrilled that you chose to react and analyze Avi’s newest song. As others have noted, there are several where he has gone into his deeper registers, especially the first song he released in 2019 after leaving PTX, Change on the Rise. Avi seems to write what’s in his heart, and giving us thoughtful lyrics. And he’s a perfectionist. He won’t release anything until he feels it’s what he wants. That and his willingness to play around with his own music gives us some very different treatments of the same song. Please keep reacting to Avi’s music and his beautiful voice. Enjoy!

I love a musically educational reaction…great format, too! Avi has said he only used 10% of his voice in PTX. He is an amazing singer-songwriter and his entire 5 octave range is stunning. Thanks for reacting to this beautiful song…Subbing for more!

Avi sings in all different ranges. Perhaps start with his first solo release, Change on the Rise. All the background vocals, booms and growls are Avi. Other songs: When I'm a Fool live at sunset sound, Otherside, First Place I Go, All is Well 7layers session #126. Not only does Avi sing beautifully in all his glorious range, but he writes and composes all his music. This song was written and arranged for a cathartic experience. I love that you said you were “forced” to listen to the lyrics, Avi is a master of writing lyrics that are very clear and easy to follow but that hits hard. Brilliant! Once again a great song with lyrics that touch you deep in your soul, sung by, for me, the best singer with such a unique, beautiful voice and that together with great piano playing is so wonderful. Avi is not just anyone. He is an instrument of life. One that can take me to high realms again, when I am deep. I used to listen to PTX for Avi. Since he left PTX, I very rarely listen to PTX anymore. I'm really happy that Avi is gone, because he has grown and is so unique. Avi introduced me to Home Free, where they sang Ring Of Fire together. I personally thought he was a much better fit for Home Free. So now it's Avi and Home Free that I always listen to.

I was just reminded of another example of Avi’s talent. Of course he has written almost all of the music he is currently releasing. The one I’m thinking of is called The Seed, which he wrote for the A Cappella Academy and you’ll find it on their channel. It is so beautiful and touching. You may already know this but I’ll put this in my comment nonetheless. In 2014 Avi, Ben Bram (Pentatonix’s arrange) and another music arranger, Rob Dietz, founded a 10-day music camp for young people 12 to 18 years old. The applicants must audition to be accepted and they come from all over the world. If the selected applicant can’t afford the camp, they will be awarded a scholarship. Avi, and often others, have a fundraiser for the camp and the scholarships. And what extremely talented they are!

I'd heard about this song, but I hadn't found it yet. Sometimes a song NEEDS to be 'simple', although there isn't anything simple about this song. While I do understand the complexities in the arrangement of this song, to me, the TRUE complexity is the meaning of the song itself. Avi is absolutely correct, we have all been dealing with a lot of things lately, and we all need the chance to heal from what we are all going through. This is what Avi is offering us, a moment where the world can fall away and allow us a chance to begin the healing process for whatever hurt we are experiencing. Thank you for your reaction to this song. I, for one, needed it!
