I've been hoping you'd do this one. It's my favorite version of this song ever. The cry in Matt's voice touches my soul. Kirstin slays it with that climatic part. I want to cry every time I actually take the time to pay attention and listen.

This is my absolute favorite Christmas song and sung by my favorite a capella group. Sir, I think I've watched this video dozens of times since it came out last year, and you noticed things I hadn't, even after listening to it so often. That right there is why I love you and your channel. You don't just bob along with your head or check your cell phone, pretend you're enjoying it or any of the other little things that drive me crazy 🥵🥵🥵 As for this arrangement, there is not another one out there that causes such visceral reactions in me. The part that causes goosebumps for me every single time I listen is the next few bars after Mitch's big note. Scott comes in with his growl on the word "fall", then the next beat is a drop (I know what I'm trying to say I just can't think of the word) Percussion (including a cymbal crash if I'm hearing it right), harmonies, a fantastic bass note, all coming in at once echoing the word "fall" and just *slamming* that note down with such power and conviction you can almost feel the BAM!! Thank you again, Sir, for your reaction and break down of this song. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and yours!!🎄🎀🎁🎶 I hope you have a wonderful time with friends and family during this special time!

As usual, you heard and found things I didn't in all the times I've listened to this amazing arrangement. I love that they included Matt so much in this and, of course, put Mitch in in the places he would shine...that NOTE!! I loved the ending. The shock value of Kirstie's full on belt and the wall of sound!! Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones!

Scott is in his maximalist era and it has bled over into current PTX. I’m not always a fan as it straddles the line between showing off and singing in service of the song. In the past, they erred on the side of the song. That said, amazing cover of Pure Imagination still stuns me with their imaginative arrangement AND their restraint. Whatever keeps them singing, I’m all for it. 12 years performing a Capella is quite an achievement
@The-Sneaky-Vampire

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like the extra-ness takes away from the song sometimes, mostly coming from Scott. He has an amazing voice, but the constant unnecessary riffs, slides, vocal frys, pop-influenced pronunciations, and mugging for the camera are... very not my thing, especially for such a reverent song such as this. Here, his solo part is my least favorite because of all of that. It's like he forgot he's singing a worshipful Christmas carol and started singing a sexy love song. And this isn't the only time the stylistic choices have taken me out of the song. I love PTX, don't get me wrong, but I miss the Avi days because I feel like he kept them a bit more grounded musicality-wise.

@@ECM24 To be fair, they all did it to some degree. For me, the contrast was that it felt like Scott was hamming, and Matt was worshipping. That's just what I got from it though. Not gonna neg on people who didn't hear it that way and enjoyed Scott's performance. And overall, I still think it's good.

This is one of the best things they’ve done. I LOVE the overwhelming explosion of sound, joy, light, images and emotions at the end, and then the quiet solo voice. The whole thing is just stunningly mind-blowing to me, and I never get tired of hearing it. Thanks for your reaction! You are to the reactor world what PTX is to the a cappella world: the best. What Pentatonix can do when they perform Christmas carols or hymnals is make you hear the words clearly and deeply and they give the listener the gift of an uplifting, joyful experience very much validating the promise of God for some. They do it in so many songs like Amazing Grace, Mary did you Know, O Holy Night and Hallelujah. They can modernize the songs like in Come all Ye Faithful or Joy to the World/ Kumama Papa bringing God to a younger generation or reviving beliefs in an older one. They are truly wonderful singers in pretty much anything they do but I think they can ignite our soul and it is partly a reason they have such a huge fan base. Once again, another beautiful performance and great analysis on your part.

I remember them talking about how they put a lot of time in to thinking about WHAT it is people like about a song when covering it. They want to change it but also keep an essence of what people enjoyed. I think the fact that they are skilled enough to do so many successful covers shows how good they are at pinpointing that. I'm pretty sure they talked about it on a podcast episode of something... It was Matt era, they sang a lot... Maybe some well known music reporter?
@slhoog8164
@slhoog8164 18 күн бұрын
Are you thinking of the Times Talks Festival interview with the New York Times music reporter Ben Sisario? That was from spring, 2018, soon after Matt joined the group. And yes, they sang 3 songs as part of the interview.
@hernameispekka_Rebecca
@hernameispekka_Rebecca 18 күн бұрын
@slhoog8164 no, although I love that one! This was audio only if I remember. I think he mentioned not knowing them but having asked his nieces they insisted he should interview them. He had gone in to it assuming he would just indulge them but then listened to their stuff and was blown away! Kept gassing them up and even complimented them getting there early. I think he mentioned having interviewed a lot of musicians. I think he was a veteran music reporter of some kind.

That end part always brings a tear my eye. I'm usually disappointed that Kirsty doesn't seem to get credit from reactors for the incredible control and verbrato she displays in that final minute. This is my favourite part of the arrangement because of the way Kirsty nails her part, so its interesting that you didnt love that part of the arrangement. Merry Christmas to all. 🎄❤️

I found it interesting too, though his reactions tend to veer more towards an analysis of the arrangement itself, with full credit always given the mastery of the performance behind it. The gist I got was that he thought she did a phenomenal job of it, (because she absolutely does!), but that he just didn't like that part of the arrangement.
@SirHairless
@SirHairless 18 күн бұрын
Merry Christmas Jasmine! 🎄 Just a quick comment on this - Yeah exactly as @TeapotNinja said above: unbelievable stuff from Kirstie and all credit where it's due, but that part of the arrangement is probably just my least favourite part as a whole ^ I believe the arrangement as a whole - and in turn, the intrinsic harmony - is really the core of the music and it's what I naturally react to (as in physically and emotionally) the most. If there's a section I'm not too keen on but it has a great solo on top, I'll appreciate and acknowledge the solo but it won't make me more keen on the rest of the music at that point 🎶 I didn't dislike that section by any means, it just wasn't my favourite bit

I agree. Kirstie is typically underrated. I think it’s because Mitch is such a superhuman and their parts are usually very similar. I was in chorus for 20+ years and I absolutely love her voice. Especially mature Kirstie in the last 5 years or so. They’re all so brilliant but always love a great shout out to our girl!

Hi, Loved your reaction. Without getting too metaphysical or philosophical here, I do believe that you can be surprised by what they are doing even if you know that they are going to do something different. We have heard this song many many times, we've sung the song plenty of times, our brains know how it's "supposed" to go. Most minds awaits the sounds it's have heard before, and as we hear something unknown, it will be "surprised" when that new comes along and knocks on our preconceived notions. I do agree with your feeling that they might have taken this just to far, but that's on me. I have this song in my repertoire and have performed it a number of times. As a singer trained in opera, we are "bound" to honor the composer's will, which is a different philosophical kettle of fish, for another time. My brain is being stubborn and very conservative when it comes to some songs, and singing this one ,in my language, it's my favorite Christmas song to sing. In English I now have a different song being my favorite, not officially on any repertoire, yet. That is one that I fell in love with through them, that being Mary Did You Know. Listening to Pentatonix version of O Holy Night a few more times it will settle in my mind and I'll see it for what it is: a reinterpretation of an old Christmas Carol. Yours, Ann

Merry Christmas, and thank you for another full year of great reactions and analyses. You are hands-down my favorite KZbin music reactor, and I hope you reach 50K subscribers before the New Year as a significant way to start a new year. I'm glad you were able to figure out what was happening with Matt's "divine" that you started clarifying at 15:07, and though it hadn't been my question, I was grateful for your explanation. I had thought Matt was rising from F# to G, and Scott was doing the descending D, C#, B, but then it sounded to me as if it was Scott doing the descent on the exhale (starting from G) and being the last voice audible, as he had done on the final note in Kiss From A Rose. I knew in my head that Scott could not have gone from the B to the G just to exhale, so I thought it might be a small sample track overlay...but it is a much simpler explanation that Matt did the exhale descent (as in, look for the horse rather than the zebra). This is one example where Matt and Scott sound (to my ear) similar to each other in their overlapping ranges.

For a little insight into the creative process of PTX, I suggest “The Recording of Evergreen,” a behind-the-scenes look at their last two weeks in the studio for their sixth Christmas album. Good day Sir ... Your reactions are just fantastic!! I am not alone in expressing that , but you hit the mark every time. I think my favorite Christmas song changes from year to year, but "O Holy Night" is always in the top 3. (.. often number 1 ..) This version is so uplifting and gives me goosebumps every time. Scott went into the stratosphere on this one. He needs to be on the radio with his solo stuff. The tears in your eyes said it all on this one Sir Hairless 🎀 My appreciation and knowledge of music has blossomed because of you. 🎄🎄🎄⛄🎄🎄⛄🎄⛄🎄🎄🎄⛄🎄🎄⛄🎄⛄🎄🎄🎄⛄🎄🎄⛄🎄

Thank you for this reaction. This is probably my favourite version of O Holy Night and like you, it's my favourite carol, equally with Carol of the bells (my choir sings the Pentatonix version of Carol of the bells!). I love this version - it's so epic, like the soundtrack of a really emotional film. It's funny how music affects us all differently, I really like the bit you are less keen on! I think Matt is phenomenal in this arrangement. Mitch is less centrestage on this one and I'm a huge Mitch fan so I rarely like the arrangements where he features less! This is an exception though. It really grabs me by the heartstrings.

I remember seeing this when it came out and wondering if Mitch just came out in his dressing gown. I'm glad I'm not alone. Mitch and Kirstie are the ones who change their looks up the most. I love that about them. Her Di Petsa dress is so great too. The song is one of my favorites as well. but nothing beats the Hallelujah Chorus. Not that PTX do it but for sheer fun to sing with a choir.

They all dress very stylin', though some more unconventionally than others. I remember doing a double take and then having a little giggle when the video first came out...my first thoughts of Mitch in his pajamas and Kirstie in a static-cling dress were clearly way off base (and only serves to reveal my own gauche style). They all looked lovely and thoroughly rocked their style choices.

Beautiful, so melodious!! Right, not a robe, both male and female have buttonless (wrap) jackets with matching pants.

I've also heard it referred to as a smoking jacket, particularly if made out of satin. I don't think Mitch smokes, but it might just be a call-back to vintage men's fashion.

@@JoyL351 The original smoking jackets were much shorter. This is just Mitch & I love it !

They of course do an amazing job with this newer arrangement, I would suggest that folks listen to the earlier one as well. Each one evokes very different reactions/feelings for me. Regardless of which version someone prefers, what a great way to reflect on the meaning of Christmas Eve, “O Holy Night” ! 🎄🎄🎄🎄 Thank you for another great reaction/analysis.

YEEEESSSSS Christmas came early! Always love your reactions! And this is my favorite version of this song! I find myself singing their arrangements when listening to other people sing the same songs adding my own background vocals 😂

The first time I heard this I was just stunned into silence. I had no words or thoughts. There are really no words in any language to describe this performance. Pentaholics often refer to Pentatonix's Wall of Sound and how emotional it can be, this was not a Wall, this was an Avalanche or Tsunami.

So with the wait. I love how you bring out things in the music that my untrained ear can't. Game you don't their original "Thank You"? Written by Scott & then partner Mark (now husband). It's stunning in a different way!

Not my personal favorite but still great vocals. Of all their Christmas music, I think that Pure Imagination/ Christmastime Is Here is my personal favorite. A combination of nostalgia and beauty with a heavy sprinkle of dopamine! Also please do Recording of Evergreen sometime in the coming year. The section of recording Over the River fascinates me every time!

I agree, with PTX you are never sure what your going to get, never disappointing but also not predictable. All their arrangements are very individualistic. I love Matt's part and the grit he puts on "Devine". The transfer from Matt to Mitch was so seamless, you almost don't miss the trade off. I am surprised you didn't say anything about Kirstie's vibrato or her belting out "divine" that was so emotional, So EPIC !! Thanks for your reaction and breakdown.

My favourite carol also, both to listen to and to sing. I'm nowhere near, not even in the same stratosphere as ptx, but I'm pretty decent.

Oh wow. I hadn't heart this version before-- I didn't know they'd done it again-- and it DID bring tears to my eyes. Twice. I do really enjoy Pentatonix, but for some reason they sort of slip on and off of my radar-- I'll get a couple of albums, and then sort of lose track for awhile. I loved Avi's voice, but I'm having fun discovering Matt's range with you.

This is probably my favorite carol as well. When I first heard this version it was a bit overwhelming. I listened a couple more times and then I couldn’t stop listening. It’s so much but also somehow works. The emotion from all of them really gets to me. And Mitch’s part 🥰
