Some people say that Black Betty was a smooth bore rifle that used black powder and the "child" was the slug that was fired, so being fired through a smooth bore it didn't rotate so just more or less went in the "general direction"/going wild of where it was pointed.

Black Bettye, the song, was a work song used by track crews over a hundred years ago to regulate their timing. A much slower version. It was first recorded in the 1930s by Leadbelly, a famous black singer. All kinds of theories about who or what Black Bettye was.

This was always a great song. It's been covered 17 different times, however, the most famous version is by Ram Jam. The lead singer/lead guitar player is Bill Bartlett, but he also can play piano, banjo and harmonica. He's also written dozens of songs. Pete Charles was the drummer for the band. This song has a lot of history. It wasn't written by Ram Jam it was a cover. But they made some rearrangements to it. No other version before theirs sounded like this. Black Betty was performed by an old blues guitar player and singer named Huddie William Ledbetter, better knowns as "Lead Belly". Most people think that Lead Belly wrote it, but it goes back even before him. The song was first recorded in the field by US musicologists John and Alan Lomax in December 1933, performed a cappella by the convict James "Iron Head" Baker and a group at Central State Farm, Sugar Land, Texas (a State prison farm). Baker was 63 years old at the time of the recording. Ram Jam's rock version is sung with slightly modified lyrics. While some may think “Black Betty” refers to a woman, others claim it's a nickname for any number of objects, including a bottle of whiskey, a whip, or even a penitentiary transfer wagon. The song seems to have origins in the 18th century, long before Lead Belly was even thinking about being born. In 1736 Benjamin Franklin published a book called The Drinker’s Dictionary which lists 228 phrases for being drunk. Which in itself is amazing. One of his phrases is “He’s kiss’d black Betty’. This is where the bottle of whisky version of Black Betty would come into it. Certainly, into the 19th century the phrase Black Betty seems to have been more in use. Lead Belly probably picked it up as a traditional folk song while he was imprisoned and working in a chain gang. Some people think that it's a racist song, but it's not a racist song. Ram Jam are actually covering an old African-American work song. I think it's a great tune. Sorry this message is so long, but along with being a musician, I've always looked into a lot of history of music and different songs too. Great reaction.

Hi , the original song was an Afro-American work song...there are many versions . Without any doubt the most famouse is the RAM JAM one ...I'm 63 years old and I remember when I listened for the first time this song in a Discoteque in the end of the '70s when the punk rock and the rock in general began to take over from Disco Music that had reigned supreme until this moment. We began to let loose with songs like Black Betty or I Was Made For Lovin You Baby by Kiss, Superman by the Kinks, My Sharona by The Knack... I remember that AC/DC, Queen, Sex Pistols, Toto were also playing in the disco, not to mention Another Brick In The Wall by Pink Floyd... in short, guitars had taken over the scene after a few years in which bass, percussion and wind instruments had ruled... then we entered the 80s and keyboards and synthesizers they overwhelmed them... "New Age" had come.

The story goes that the record company gave them money to do the video, but they blew much of it on pot, so they had to do a much cheaper version. The cheapest they could do was in the back yard with friends and family. This is their one-hit-wonder, but they did have some regional success in their area. A couple of their songs did make it on radio, but didn't get the airtime they really needed.

The song was first recorded in the field by US musicologists John and Alan Lomax in December 1933, performed a cappella by the convict James "Iron Head" Baker and a group at Central State Farm, Sugar Land, Texas (a State prison farm).[11] Baker was 63 years old at the time of the recording. The Lomaxes were recording for the Library of Congress and later field recordings in 1934, 1936, and 1939 also include versions of "Black Betty". A notated version was published in 1934 in the Lomaxes book American Ballads and Folk Songs. It was recorded commercially in New York in April 1939 for the Musicraft Records label by Lead Belly, as part of a medley with two other work songs: "Looky Looky Yonder" and "Yellow Woman's Doorbells". Musicraft issued the recording in 1939 as part of a 78-rpm five-disc album entitled Negro Sinful Songs sung by Lead Belly.[12] Lead Belly had a long association with the Lomaxes, and had himself served time in State prison farms. Lead Belly was first recorded by the Lomaxes in 1933 when he was approximately 44 years old. John Lomax helped Lead Belly get the recording contract with Musicraft in 1939.

The story I read was that some rich person (from Great Britain?) was paying for them to produce a short version of the original song just for his own use. The record company gave them some small amount of cash so they bought some beer etc and they recorded in someone's backyard (on Long Island?). Anyway, the studio version is almost identical but is about a min and half longer due to the excellent extended middle guitar solo. This live video version looks like it was pieced together from at least two takes because the people in the background kept switching locations, and of course the gong was overdubbed.

this song dates back to early 1800's or before. it was a English military song, a black slave field workers song, blues song , and finally a rock song . so many years and rewrites. each version is different and black betty has different meaning . I think in this version he is talking about a woman . if you listen to the lyrics it seems is easy enough to understand. black betty had a child , makes me feel right, always ready, shakin that thing with these lyrics.
