You got that right with the songwriting. The lead guitarist Kanami is the main composer and arranger of the band. Her consistency and output rate is pretty nuts. They have a solid catalogue of 100+ tracks (an album every year since their debut) spanning the genres of pop, punk, metal, jazz and blues with hard rock as the core sound. Their ability to incorporate so many different elements into a track while still retaining their signature BandMaid sound is top notch. Definitely among the most fun and consistently great band out there today.

Hey Steve... MISA is one of the best bassists today, not even kidding or overreacting. Show me ONE bassist in an actual band that is playing lead, doing solos and can switch from pick to slap in an blink of an eye, she has her own technique for it, how cool is that? So of course she is able to play her bass like no one else! BUT Kanami (lead guitar) is still my favorite, because she is the main composer, has always great riffs and really tasteful/emotional solos! It´s really tough to choose a "favorite", because they are all talented, got their own charme and lovely. Greetings from Germany and why don´t you do an MV like "Blooming", it´s a great song that will give you energy for a whole week!

Steve, you hit all the nails on the head. They are pure joy. You will be a Maidiac shortly. This is the song they have the most fun with. You'll be hard pressed to find a better rhythm section. Kanami is the composer extraordinaire and riff meister. No egos in this band. They are all featured players. Doing what is best for the song. And it shows. ONSET-LIVE (instrumental - the way Rock is meant to be played) would be a good next song. BAND-MAID is Awesome. Peace.

Akane (the drummer) once wrapped up a show back in 2016 and was informed that an audience member had been blown away by her playing and asked to meet her. Not a terribly unusual scenario, except that the audience member happened to be *Jimmy Freaking Page* who, needless to say, has a bit of personal perspective when it comes to great drummers.

More Band-Maid ? so much to choose from. Live on the official channel there's two double-headers "Dice /Different" and "Manners / Black Hole". First pair are mid-period Band-Maid, the second pair the more recent material. No audience sadly because of C-19 so lack a lot of the atmosphere of those sort of live performances. MVs - The Non-Fiction Days is a good early selection, mid-period you can try Daydreaming (a power ballad) later MVs - Rinne (heavy), Warning (spectacular). Generally avoid fan recordings except those by Vladimir Chupin (his epic 3 song set from a Hamburg gig is worth checking out.) And I expect others will recommend a totally different set of songs :)

Yup you are right- they call themselves hard rock but they are all over the place with their music- you never know what you will get- punk, funk, pop, rock, metal - and they often mix elements even within songs. They are very creative and fantastic not just in playing but composing too (mostly kanami). You are also correct that they all fit together amazingly and support each other to make the song the best rather than show off. The bassist and drummer are 2 of the best on the planet right now- and their lead guitarist is up there too! But because they never show off even tho they get little solo's, you have to listen to quite a lot of their songs to get a full idea of their range and talents. And yes they are very happy and positve compared to most heavy bands.

For the musician in all of us! Miku Kobato - RHYTHM GUITAR - plays Zemaitis C24MF (Zemaitis Endorsement - with a Signature Guitar called Flappy Pigeon) - EVH Amps - Writes the lyrics - Has only been playing guitar for about 7 years. Was the singer but took a back seat voluntarily! KANAMI TONO - LEAD GUITAR - plays PRS Custom 24 (PRS Endorsement) - Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectifier. - Writes the music (one interview she states that she has a database - 2 years worth?!?!) Misa - BASS GUITAR plays Black Cloud "Smoker" and Privat Reserve (SG Style) bass - (Black Cloud Endorsement) Orange AB200B MKIII Amps Akane Hirose - DRUMS - Plays TAMA drums with Zildjian Cymbals - Roland KD-A22 (Possibly an Endorsement with TAMA and ROLAND) Saiki - VOCALS - Sennheiser microphones and DPA Microphones Notice KANAMI is playing a PRS Custom 24 - just curious as to what year yours is - I have a 2004 as it also does not have the blade switch and it is a similar color as well.

Just for a moment, forget they're all female and forget they're dressed as maids. Two members (MISA - Bass, Akane - Drums) are classically trained pianists and musicians who studied at the Tokyo Academy of Music while Kanami, the lead guitarist, has also been playing piano since the age of 3 or 4 but is concert standard (almost unbelievably, given her skills, she only switched to guitar about 10 years ago!) They all have superb musical ability as well as passion, a lack of ego and the drive to play real, in your face, Rock which is why they are THE best live Rock band on Earth right now. OK, now that's explained, you can go back and marvel at how cute those outfits look and how incredibly beautiful all the band members are. The only band I've seen that is playing live like bands I went to see in the 70's, such as Led Zeppelin or Sabbath or Zappa. Music they write themselves, real guitars, drums and bass played loudly and with passion as well as powerful Rock vocals. They are all really close friends and know how to have fun together on stage, confident as they are in each others’ abilities and skills. They've revived the classic Rock sound and given the genre a much needed kick in the ass, as that other brilliant Japanese band Babymetal have done for Metal. Future reactions I'd recommend, as they really shine brightest live, would be from the DVD they released in April 2020. PLAY: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aX3biZKqaduabbc, CHOOSE ME: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpTUmqeYjcycnbc and WONDERLAND: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmXLqX-bfcekkNE , though they have superb music videos too. In fact, they released a new MV today, 'Sense'.

Kanami, the lead guitarist, composes the songs. Miku, the rhythm guitarist, founded the band and writes the lyrics; she came out of an idol group background and worked at a maid cafe before coming up with the idea of cute maids doing hard rock -- she found the juxtaposition interesting (amusing? hilarious?). She couldn't play guitar when she started, but was tutored by Kanami and has become a great rhythm guitarist.

You’re right about the bassist. She’s proficient in using a pick, finger-style, slapping and, occasionally, even tapping. Seamlessly switches between them in a fraction of a second too. Very creative, weaves in and out of playing rhythm to being essentially a lead guitarist. Loves to have a stiff drink by her side on stage. According to the other band members, she is likely the most accomplished musician in the band, she is said to have perfect pitch and be the only member playing live without in-ears instead preferring to feel the beat from the drums in her feet.

This was written during their transition from working with songs by management-approved outside songwriters, to the Miku and Kanami team. Another songwriter did the melody on Freedom, with Miku doing lyrics - a declaration of personal autonomy. About the same time, their management finally approved a song with melody composed by Kanami (lead guitar), "Alone" and the door was open to all their songs after being created by the Dynamic Duo. Today the other members are becoming more involved in the songwriting part. Exciting things to come!

Real Existence live official is rockin like only good bands can. Misa is insane talent for sure, but then they ALL are. Live is best. If they come to Australia I will go to every show they do here.

Since you are a musician... Your next song should be onset. It's an incredible instrumental and Misa will make your jaw drop.

Reminds me of how excited I was when I saw their first couple of songs. This is just dipping 2 toes into that talent pool. Take your time. For next song, id say either Blooming music video or Rinne music video. Blooming is more poppy (not really but dont know how to describe it) and Rinne is one of their rare metal songs.

You hit the nail right on the head with your words right after the video. Indeed, they are not interested in genre boundaries. You'll be surprised what else these ladies have in their catalog. :) And I'll also bet that 'Play' and 'Onset' will be the two most recommended songs after this one. And I can't even argue with that. But maybe it's worth to have a look at the beginning of their catalog. The MV for 'Thrill' and the live version of 'Real Existence' to be exact. :) _____________________ 【 Our rock never dies ever. Love Band Maid. My favorite band. Only discovered them in 2019 and got to see them in NYC. If you can get their video of "Take Me Higher" from their Zepp concert I think you'll really like that song. During the solos MISA and Kanami do a bass and guitar dual. It's the song that got me hooked on them.

Howzit Steve... Do "take me higher" live, if you like bass.. Awesome bass/lead trade off.. They are the best band on the planet. You have done 2 songs, they have over 100 so enjoy the ride..; Us Madiacs will be along for the ride.. Another great live video is Real existance.. Well actually, they are all great...

What you will discover with Band Maid is they will write multiple genres in one song that makes absolutely no sense on paper but when they play it, it sounds perfectly natural. They also load their songs up with plenty of prog touches. Band Maid are not a style or genre. Band Maid is a sound. They are also the most adorable musical badasses in the galaxy. They can melt your face and your heart in one song. For some fun instrumentals try Onset ( Misa is in full flight on this), Without Holding Back the ladies pull out all of the stops and definitely hold back nothing. For some more punk give Dice or Blooming. My favorite song that throws every genre and the kitchen sink is Moratorium. Moratorium has one of their most accessible and commercial post chorus back to back with their most their most heavy sludge metal bridges(you might have to go to Bilibili or another alternative video site for this). Those are my thoughts. I am sure that you will get plenty of other great suggestions in the comments. Band Maid has never written a bad song. Great reaction. Cheers.

For your consideration. There's a group Onewe. A South Korean band that in the Kbandish way. Their label is known for vocal talent. So the lead singer is crazy good. The band writes, composes and arranged their songs. Parting and/or Aurora. Both great.

Great reaction - Band-Maid enjoy what they are doing and it's effortless... every one of them is superb in their role and know how they fit together. Yes, MISA is a monster on bass, and you have so much more to enjoy! Try Rinne, the double header Manners/Black Hole and maybe Dice/Different. But no matter what you pick it's gonna be good. One thing, which is often overlooked is just how amazing Saiki is on vocals. She's a complete powerhouse in her own right, but so often overlooked amongst all the incredible musicianship around her. Looking forward to the next Band-Maid reaction :-)

"It's going to take me months to listen to them all." While this is a problem, it's a pretty good problem to have. I suggest doing at least one BAND-MAID vid a day. You know what they say: A BAND-MAID vid a day keeps the 'rona away. Great reaction! You really seem to understand what BAND-MAID is about. They aren't here to "wow" us for three and a half minutes, they are here to tell us a story and make us feel something. It's not about showmanship, it's about craftsmanship.
