that's easy enough-- the dog died or somebody stole /broke your fav thing. Heartbreak happens at all ages, all levels. Kids at all ages suffer trauma, loss, pain. They lose parents in accidents, friends in shootings, dog gets hit by a car. Parents are abusive, parents separate, siblings leave home.
