Britain's response to grunge was led by bands like Oasis, Blur, and Suede who made conscious efforts to sound antithetical to grunge. Also, the garage rock/rock-revival scene of the early 2000's was important for the same reasons as grunge, but its popularity and influence were a fraction in comparison.

It took 40 years for the Ramones debut album to go gold. They have a total of two gold albums. Most of their albums never came close to cracking the top 100. But "punk rock" the movement, the thing that happened everyone worldwide was talking about and scared everyone to death, was in the uk. It seems naive of some of these rock stars to assume they knew what he was going through, “the pressures of fame”, I don’t see him as being that deeply affected by the fame, he just didn’t want it in his face so he actively fought against it. Good for the networkers, but it’s not for everyone. His was a Liberal family in a dying logging town, dorms and house parties, then slogging through some very impressive self managed tours of Europe and u.s.He saw a lot of people against him and his world. Only to turn into more avalanches of souls, now trying to scrape their own worlds out of his fortune. The whole time dealing with a severe stomach pain. And still said to be the nicest, sincere person, with an incredible talent. Give the man his jaded edge he was a badass through and through. Heroine and fame is your common thread I suspect that is what they are drawing their views from.

Robert are you shitting me America is what influenced all of the punk bands in England. Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols said that "I was so influenced by The New York Dolls and in particular Johnny Thunders (guitar player from the Dolls) and Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers it was embarrasing". Other bands in addition to the Dolls, and the Heartbreakers were the Ramones, The Dead Boys, The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, The MC5, Television, The Talking Heads etc etc. The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned all were in AWE of Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers and al the other punk bands from New York (even though the Dead Boys were originally from Ohio)

The New York Dolls were probably the first Punk band back in 72. The whole stereotypical glamour and style that surrounded Punk was probably influenced more by the sex pistols than any other punk band of the seventies but yeah I agree that America started Punk and Britain caught on. Nirvana was big in America but they were put on the same pedestal as the Beatles in England before nevermind was released in Sept 91, it wasn't until nevermind that Nirvana were the biggest thing since Elvis in America

People that are depressed often portray themselves as being okay or happy, it’s extremely common. The facts are, again no one truly knows what someone is going through, even if they’re your family, best friend, spouse, whatever…let alone someone with the egregious amount of pressure this man was dealing with. It’s pretty disrespectful for you to project completely baseless conjecture about this man’s passing…in fact it’s crazy. Did you ever stop to consider the only person to profit from that theory is the fucking detective and director of the film?? Huh how convenient. If Courtney had anything to do with his death, his family, band mates and friends would never Fucking get on stage with the woman or associate with her…yet they still do. Sure they probably don’t like her. She probably wasn’t a good influence for him. But he was a grown man and made his own decisions. She didn’t fucking kill him. You need to accept that.

That's the thing about Nirvana and The Sex Pistols, they are great bands, most other punk is not as good, punk needs to be musical, the myth is punk bands can't play, and this is true in a lot of cases, they rely on posturing and attitude. But Nirvana and Sex Pistols were GREAT, and it wasn't due to being punk that made them so. Punk needs to hit a nerve in mainstream consciousness, it needs to be popular in order to make the opposing statement in the face of success. Kurt Cobain understood this, he will alwaqys be interesting because he worked on multiple levels that seemingly contradicted each other. Cut short, he embodied this contradiction and often, people like Kurt do this unknowingly and to their greatest detriment.

Wow, Plant really doesn’t know his history. “They finally got their own punk”?? I thought everyone knew that the original punk movement labeled as “punk” started in New York. All of the original UK punk bands have stated that they all formed or started playing that kind of music after the Ramones played in London. Suicide, Heartbreakers, Patti Smith, Ramones, Talking Heads, etc. were all playing at CBGB and Max’s Kansas City in 1974 before Sex Pistols, Clash, Damned, or Buzzcocks even existed yet. Not to mention Velvet Underground, MC5, Stooges, NY Dolls, etc. who were punk bands before the term even existed. The original British punk bands were arguably more immediately influential on future music than the American ones were (outside of Ramones). But to say the US “finally got their punk” is like saying the US “finally got their blues after Cream”. 🤦‍♂️

Some people get their panties in a bunch when someone tells them the truth. I love Nirvana but you're absolutely correct. My relationship with them is not so much the quality of music but the connection to Kurt himself. I'm sure a lot of his fans even now like them for that reason.
