As a pianist, I don’t get how Sedo was 1 and Summer was 5. I get Sedo chose a harder piece, but I feel Summer had better musicality and technique, and was more confident. Sedo also had flat fingers. I think people just chose him because he played a popular classical piece that everyone thinks is like the hardest piece out there.

Piano girl (Summer) here! Working musician as well (composer, studio + touring pianist / keyboardist). The piece you heard me play was an original classical crossover composition of mine (“JFN” by Summer Swee-Singh… not v accessible, but if you want to hear it in full, it’s on Spotify / iTunes etc.). I participated because I wanted to see if TwoSet would react to it (and they did, so it was worth it imho), get some feedback on my original work, maybe catch the eye of some music directors, and also bc I’m a masochist apparently, lmfao.

Aw, thanks for the kind words. The piece I played was an original composition “JFN” by Summer Swee-Singh (on Apple Music, Spotify, KZbin, etc. if you want to hear the full piece). That said, I’m a very small time composer + pianist, so there definitely was no recognizability or “accessibility” factor with my music as there was with Sèdo’s performance. Funny thing, I debated playing Fantasie lmpromptu (or Liszt’s Lieberstraume No. 3) as I still have parts of both pieces memorized from my classical pinnacle over a decade ago (I’m now a studio/touring musician and rarely play classical anymore), but then Sèdo went before me and played the Chopin selection, so I decided on the fly to play one of my originals instead :)

As a pro studio piano player, I have to say that imo that guy butchered Fantaisie Impromptu and played the La La theme pretty robotically, unlike the original recording which has a great sense of phrasing. I think people just connect to the La La Land song emotionally. If someone would have played The River Flows in You they would have all ranked them #1.
@Blullaby
@Blullaby 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe you're right... But everybody was free to choose to play whatever, and convey emotions to the audience while trying to display their talent... And even with a butchered piece (which I obviously couldn't notice even though I've heard it many times before), I did feel his emotions more than the others' emotions 🤷🏾‍♀️. I guess it's easier when you're not a professional... Joel said that 1 and 2 were more accessible to an average audience and I agree. I'm average. I thought they were the more enjoyable to listen to, and if I could only replay one, it would be the Fantaisie Impromptue. (:

@@kristin123a Yeah, I agree. Plus that piece, as a pianist myself, isn't the hardest piece. I would say it's challenging, but a bit overrated. Lizst's Hungarian Rhapsodies and Chopin's harder Etudes are quite impressive if played well. It's very similar to that one violinist Twoset reviewed. Like it's not about playing fast, but how sharp and clear the notes are. Are there dynamics? Did you practice? But he didn't even get the notes correct. I mean anyone could run with the pedal on the piano and just kind of like whiz La Campanella for example, but it's when the notes are played clearly and with proper emotion and with all of these things sped up, but not removed which defines the skill at which the piece was played.

My personal belief 1. Purple shirt piano - she had the most expression in her playing. The dynamic contrast, the varying emotions, and the fact that the piece she played is way more difficult than it sounds. 2. Black shirt guitarist and singer - the singer had good timbre, tone, intonation, and the song itself, while simple was perfectly executed 3. Drummer - basic beat with fairly simple fills but he executed it perfectly and confidently and kept the tempo which is super important for drummers. 4. Other pianist - while the piece he chose was super hard, it wasn’t that well executed. There was too much pedal, sloppy and non fluid runs, and occasional short pauses which I feel some didn’t notice. But the fact he could play Chopin at an okay level is enough to put him in the fourth spot 5. Multi instrumentalist - ngl that cello playing was kinda bad. It had pretty poor tone and sounded like an amateur musician. The guitar was good, and that last instrument didn’t really seem like anything to me. Just like a little quirky thing to add another instrument. 6. Blue hair - his voice had pitch fluctuations and his expression was meh. The piano was basic chords almost anyone could play in a couple days. Overall very amateur and lacking in demonstrating actual skill. From a former pianist and current trumpet player

I think music is so amazing in that it can touch so many different people in different ways, through different musicians and styles. Variety is what makes the world go round.

Thank you Joel for your videos. You inspired me to start singing and playing guitar/piano again after 10+ years away from it. You're good peeps! Sending good vibes from NorCal!

I think what being talented truly means is the ability to know which technique / knowledge to use on the fly to invoke whatever feeling you want from your audience. Like a chef, you can imagine how your food will taste like just by looking through your pantry Example: I wanna make my audience feel excited, I should add this discard that change tempo change genre change runs change rifts change composition and so on

A good video to comment on + Joel's experience as a musician + Joel's personality = eactly the kind of relatively low effort video the channel still needs a few times a week.

As a singer who also plays many instruments, I have to point out my own reason for playing multiple instruments: to be able to make a whole song by yourself, without being dependent on other people. I mean it's pretty frustrating if you have something in your head, but you can only sing. If you don't have any musician friends, what do you do? socialize? pfff! :D . Also, singing on stage is -for me- very vulnerable, you can't really hide behind your mic... and if you dance like a fridge... it's pretty handy to know the guitar, or any instrument, and be able to hide behind it when you (don't) sing (much easier than grow your self confidence ^^" )

Maybe controversial opinion, but art (of any kind) is highly subjective. YES, there is technical skill involved. HOWEVER, in terms of intent and connection; I think it is important to let the consumer just have their own perception (first at least). Regardless of the artists intent, everyone has their own life experiences that feed into it equally, if not more.

I think you got the definition wrong. Talent is about how easy it is to pick up and progress in a skill. Though over time, progress will start slowing down as you get to more advanced lessons. That’s when you actually need to work hard to practice in order to progress in skill.

personally i think sedo got number 1 because he played the only piece that people recognised and people are naturally going to enjoy something more if they already know it. it was a beautiful piece but i think the main reason he was ranked so high was purely because of recognisability (but his fingers were so flat it made me squirm ahaha my piano teacher would cry)- my ranking wouldve probably been: (1) singer girl (i thought her voice was beautiful and her guitar playing was really nice as well, it was a great combination) (2) summer (her dynamics were amazing and she was so confident and smooth) (3) sedo (still an amazing performance, i really enjoyed it (4) multiple instrument guy (very impressive skills over many instruments) (5) drummer (awesome performance, so much energy, i think it would sound better as part of a band tho) (6) blue hair guy (he has the basics to be really great but needs a lot of practice, good songwriting tho)

I wouldn’t want to be at the place of any of those musicians because it just feels awkward and cringe. Plus I really don’t like today’s world where everything should be labeled ( more talented or less) or based on the competition.
