I grew up in NYC and it was known by singers that if they couldnt bring their own musicians, then they had to bring their own sheet music! Most of the young church musicians in the 1950s could also read, so we were seldom embarrassed. But this video makes good suggestions for the problems today's musicians may face!

Excellent presentation, in my years I'd alway ask the singer I didn't know to start the song so I could hear their melodic path. If they give me key I have to assume they might start in upper range of song if they are not semi-professional. I was the young musician asked of the organ or slid off when the soloist saw their favorite musician in audience (usually hiding in rear). I alway suggest musicians to practice home chords (1-4-5-6) and only substitute once you hear the pattern. Like C-Dub said all songs have a pattern or cycle around for the next verse. As a result of my experiences I became that musician tapped on to play for visiting soloists after hearing me play for someone else.

Excellent video. Lord knows how many times I've been in that situation - original song or a song I simply didn't know...but I always figured out a way to work through it. VERY important point is to wait for one cycle if you feel pressured or led to play...at least get a feel for the melodic content of at least a verse. I agree to NOT play otherwise. Thank you!!

I totally agree with what you are saying when a musician doesn't know how to play a song the best thing you can do for the singer is not to play. It has happened to me to many times. Sometimes I, on purpose, will sing something I know they can't play. You have to announce to them that you will sing accopella. And sometimes they just ignore you and still try to play just to annoy you.

C-Dub this is so on point. I remember years ago when I was learning how to play at my dad's church, playing behind a singer who did this and I tried to back her on the organ. I was fumbling and struggling and another seasoned musician was sitting in the congregation walked up and asked if he could help me out. I was so embarrassed but I thought to myself sure go ahead but she just made this song up lets see how you do it. I slid over and he absolutely killed it!. He told me later after service the exact same thing you pointed out. People won't remember that you didn't play the song, but they will remember if you tried and struggled, so if you are not sure how to follow or fake follow (scales modes etc) then don't play. Just sit there and clap, rock and smile. When they are done then pick it back up.

Our Director of Music doesn't let anyone get up and sing without him reviewing the song first. No telling what kind of mess people might think to sing. So our musicians always know what music is coming up. I run FOH mostly these days, but I also write and play keys. If I want people to play with me, I'm going to give them a lead sheet or something to go by and hopefully rehearse first so the worship isn't being killed by musicians trying to struggle with working out music on the spot.

I have been in the same situation so often, and I agree ☝🏾 with your moves. You’re correct. Don’t play straight away, listen and then play obvious cords, and don’t bring in complex moves as you could throw the singer out. This has happened to me so often. You have to think on your feet and respond as quickly as you can. If the song sounds like it’s impossible to follow don’t play at all and leave it a Capella.

After that service, I never went back to that church. And the worse part is they didn't have a drum guy to play drum and she expect me to add drums from the piano at the same time whiles learning the song. Like! Who does that? I was so frustrated I nearly left during the service but kept cool. Even though I couldn't wait for the service to end so that I may leave. Was really embarrassed. Never went back to that church.

Excellent advice. I have been through it as a musician and mind y’all I’m not advanced yet, still learning. What I usually do is that I put on warm pads very low and no piano and I stay on the 1 until I figure the pattern out then I add on the piano. This requires high ear training to my opinion. Advanced musicians easily pick up any song on the spot 🤦🏾♂️. And pastors and singers stop embarrassing musicians like that in front of the congregation 😒😒😒

I've been there. Happens a lot actually lol. It is okay singers to communicate verbally before starting. Not playing is definitely the play but your fellow musicians might try and pressure you into playing, just ignore them. Just voice can be nice sometimes. With that said, being able to hear functional harmony when the singer starts singing like in this video is a must and I think learning that one skill is more valuable than anything else. The best way to learn it though is through these types of situations sadly in my opinion. Getting a good singer friend to sing random songs while you practice playing what you hear might be a good idea.

I typically do the first thing you said... NOT PLAY. If it were the case that this singer had asked me just before entering stage to help him/her out, then I'd faithfully stick to all the unrudimentary, involuntary and abstract key variations til the end, regardless of output (it's amusing). It's good especially for originals to obtain a phone recorded voice note of the song even a few minutes before. When they follow a steady time signature the melody is much more predictable. The first rule is of course, dont play... and let people know that your preferred approach is to have a rehearsal first.

It all depends on your skill level. I agree with finding the key and not playing unless you are directed to. From there if you are good with melody I think listening then playing what was just sung then wait for the next line. Then repeat until a pattern is established. Some musicians are afraid someone will take over and they won't be able to play again in that service. 😀
