Tone does make a big difference even if you are a good picker, and Tony MacAlpine is the perfect example.

Bottom line is that Eric Johnson is a damn good picker...All the effects stuff is bullshit...If you can transmit the notes from your heart and brain and through your fingers, you got it...Doesn't matter about 'hand wired' Marshalls, Fender suitcase amps vs. blah blah, Echoplex pre-amp sound vs. Memory Man w/Fuzz Face...All extraneous...If you can't play beautiful guitar with just an acoustic guitar in your hands, forget it...Johnson is pulling your chain...He's a good picker.

Frank Dialogue he certainly is, but you should consider his and many others perspective. When playing the electric guitar, amplifying, distorting, modulating and manipulating the signal is very much a huge part of what it means to take full advantage of your instrument in order to get the sound that’s in your head out into the air. In other words, in the case of the electric guitar, the effects are part of the instrument. When you get to be as good as he is, THEN you get to worry about the hand wired Marshall’s and which fuzz face is best.
