George was a no-nonsense individual. He recognized the talent Steve Luthaker has and he also was gracious enough to not disappoint his child-like desire for a Beatle to participate in that gig. George was such a wonderful man!

Mark Hamill told a story of how he and George happened to be on the same plane. Once Mark realized this asked if he could meet him. He was trying to not be too much of a Fan Boy but thanked George for his work and inspiration. George told him he liked his work too and was a Star Wars fan. It was brief but Mark took away to always be kind to his fans like George was to him. Love this story. ❤️🕉️

What I love about these guys is that they have recorded and played with many big names, yet, even they are the first to acknowledge that as soon as a Beatle walks in the room there is a entirely different level of unparalleled reverence.

I remember seeing an interview with Eric Clapton back in the early 90's. He was saying that when you're a rock star you come to expect all eyes on you when you walk into a room. But when you walk in with a Beatle, nobody sees you.

Funny this came around… When George’s son Dhani graduated from Brown university, a writer from the Providence Journal saw him at a local cafe. When she asked if it was really him he invited her to sit and he agreed to an interview. George was in late stage cancer by this time. The reporter described him as genuine and gracious, ready for the future. This always stood out to me. Glad to see it confirmed by Steve Lukather!!!

Lukather is a brilliant musician. He once visited my friend's recording studio to lay down some guitar tracks for a friend or relative, and my friend said that he was amazing. He whipped out several brilliant tracks in no time flat, all keepworthy. Just an amazing musician.

did your sister tell you about the neighbors(probably the house between hers and steve's) who decided to have their landscaping done at like 6am on a sunday with leaf blowers etc? Steve was pissed so the day after that, he rolled his amp outside and at the crack of dawn he plugged in his guitar, dimed the amp and gave the neighbors a shredfest alarm clock including a "good morning" shouted as louad as possible. Brilliant player. Musician’s musician. I have seen the “All-Starr’s” with Mr Lukather twice and he excelled amongst all the excellent musicians with whom he shared the stage! Ringo put his arm around him after “Hold the Line” and they enjoyed an off-mic moment of whispers. Then, Ringo let us in on the chat: “That was about the one millionth time he has played that song, and I just had to tell him that this was THE best he’s Ever played!” His solos/outro was absolutely phenomenal - on Ringo’s birthday at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville! Brilliant. Did not know about the friendship then, but Ringo was sincere … And I was seated across the aisle from Mrs Starr and her sister, Mrs (Joe) Walsh. Not a bad night.❤❤❤ Great interview!😊

Such a great interviewer, Joe let's his guests speak uninterrupted. I was fortunate to see Ringo and The All Star Band last year (2022) and Greg and Steve were part of the great line up. Well, the show was way better than I ever expected. Edgar Winter did an 8+ minute version of Frankenstein, among so many other great tunes. Everybody was spot on that night. I have my wife to thank (which I did) for that surprise.

George Harrison had a fondness for the ukulele. He also gave them out as parting gifts after a little uku jam sessions. Tom Petty was a receipent of one and george left four more ukuleles at Tom's house because you can never have enough. Good times.

On a much, much smaller scale... I used to be in a club band with Derrek Van Eaton as our lead vocalist. He and his brother, Lon were signed to Apple records and had their album produced by George Harrison. Lon was on several of Ringo's solo albums. (The Van Eaton album was just recently re-released.) One night, Lon and the famous Beatle friend, artist and bass player... Klaus Voorman stepped into the club we were playing at in Glendale, Ca.. We had the great local guitarist, Carlos De La Paz in the band also. So anyway, when I found out they were both in the club (particularly Klaus) I played my heart on bass that night and walked over and said hello. Klaus liked my bass playing and asked me if I could give him bass lessons! (I was so shocked by that) I mentioned to Lon that Carlos and I were going to Donte's jazz club in L.A. to watch Larry Carlton play with Greg Mathison and one of the Porcaro brothers playing bass in a few days. So we invited Lon to go to Donte's with us and he actually went! That was a great little night of music. Larry was personable and the club was intimate, but we did not meet him. Anyway, afterward we went to Lon's pad in Hollywood and jammed with Lon. Bob Welch's drummer also was there at the jam. (Bob Welch from the version of Fleetwood Mac and solo artist with the hit, "Ebony Eyes"). A few nights later, Lon's friend "Ritchie" jammed with Lon and Carlos. Ritchie turned out to be RINGO STARR! I was invited to jam, but I didn't go and I did not know that Ringo would be there. Man, to this day I regret not going. LOL Carlos told me Ringo was a very cool, down to Earth guy. Ringo was kind of a family man and showed Carlos a photo of his young son, Zach. A few days later, I was at Lon and Derrek's pad and Klaus Voorman was there. I told Klaus I was honored to meet such a famous celebrity and he made me laugh, because he said, "Yeah, I am famous because I know those guys, but I have NONE of their money." LOL What was even cooler was for some reason, Klaus had the ORIGINAL piece of artwork with him that he created for the Beatle's album, "REVOLVER" and I actually got to hold it in my hands! What a trip... So these are my little true stories about the Beatles. That was a long time ago! It all happened in 1977. Those were the days, my friends.

I think my favorite incarnation of Bob Welch is the short-lived band that came after Mac, Paris. That song "Black Book" just blows me away, it was my introduction to Welch and while French Kiss was interesting pop I'll never forget that jazzy power-pop/funk in the 2 Paris albums.

@12:30 if Steve Lukather can’t get other people’s music down - no one - and I mean NO ONE can. Being a fan of Toto and of Steve’s playing for a long time I’m STILL finding things that he played on that blew me away! If Lukather could dance he’d be the complete package: he can play like nobody’s business. He writes songs (that are not total shredfests!) that become MASSIVE HITS! He’s funny. And by all accounts a good guy…. Get that man to Arthur Murray so we can tick that box!

Clayton: George was GREAT. I freaked when I saw the photo from 'Magical Mystery Tour' of him holding his psychedelic Strat. The clouds parted and a sunbeam shone down illuminating George and that awesome guitar. I knew I needed to play the guitar. That was forty years ago and I'm still partial to Strats.

LesPaulDisciple, I know that Mystery Tour picture well. My walk with George and the lads started before the psych stuff even. Beginning with hearing them on the BBC when I lived in France. Love those Richenbachers still, But I did finally get myself a Strat to add to my stable. In fact I will be playing in a couple hours. It is mana for me and so I gather it is for you. I was 5 from Boston USA when the Beatles landed in America, it was on tv and even the adults were talking about it, one of my elementary teachers in 1968, 3rd grade playing Beatles records at lunch, very cool because society was very conservative in my area, the Beatles started a music revolution, literally, great memories, great show, thank you. Steve's amazing contribution to music. 🙏

Steve says about his relationship with Ringo “If he were Bob Smith he would still be my friend” - love that. Was how I felt about Walter Becker. He would give me rides home and we would sit in the back together having a laugh and talking about whatever.The fact that he was Walter Becker was incidental. Miss him

I love Steve - I’ve seen this interview before but it’s always nice to revisit. I find him very humble and kind and extremely interesting. Love his stories & think he’d be fun to hang out with too. Very talented musician - I wonder how many took up guitar after listening & watching him? Totally recommend his book - fascinating, informative, sad & also laugh out loud funny. Thanks for posting -

I don't think many people realize just how much that "session musicians" like Steve Lukather made the songs of songwriters "come to life". That you couldn't have these amazing songs without such talented people playing them. In all honesty, I think one of the reasons modern songs seem so "dead" or "mechanical" these days - manufactured, really - is because the role of the "session musician" has largely disappeared from the industry. These guys put the color and magic into songs. It's like now we just hear computer simulations of them rather than their original and spontaneous interpretations.

Steve seems like such a real decent guy.And it’s not like he isn’t a major talent himself,he has created some of the best music of our times.But he comes across so humble and thankful , like to his friend Gregg Bissonette.. I’m sure Gregg feels the same,he’s another decent person with phenomenal talent.. I hope to always have Steve Lukather music in my life. Thanks for the great interview with such a talent
