He loved guitar playing enough to become one of the best guitar players of all time, but was more considerate about his father and how hard he works for the money. What an unbelievably mature teenager. No wonder how he turned out to be such a great guy.

OH Boy...that one got me. My dad and I are also very close, and he bought my first two guitars and amps. Lord knows my folks were so broke at that time - they did much better later - but getting me music equipment was a priority for my dad. It wasn't great stuff - nothing like a LP Deluxe - but it sufficed, and got me on the path to becoming a player. That was over 40 years ago, and I'm still at it. Thanks Dad!

The best part was just a Father asking his son to hang out as soon as the Father came home from work. Steve picked Guitar Center and his Father could've said " Let's do something we both like to do!" but he said , ok son let's go to G.C.. The purchase of the amp and guitar was just a bonus. Today, the Les Paul and amp may be worth tens of thousands of dollars, but the Father and son hang will forever be Priceless.

Biggest take away from this story is? WE NEED MUSIC IN SCHOOL ! I moved to a little oil town in Texas, third grade. Music teachers in grade school usually just make you sing from a song book. Mrs Jackson 1964 music teacher in Olney, Tx had a different approach. We learned MUSIC. Reading notes and everything that goes with it. I still remember my one and a half years of lessons. Even if you don't have a music career, music can be a very rewarding part of a life.

Key is you gotta respect your kid’s passions. I’m a guitarist and love this story. My son tried guitar and bass and it didn’t catch. His passion turned out to be a mechanic. I saw the same passion in him for working on his trucks that I had for guitar. He could spend hours under his trucks in the garage same as I’d spent hours in my bedroom with my guitars. Bought him the best set of tools money could buy and two years of automotive trade school. 🤘❤️

My father got me a '73 Gibson Les Paul Standard when I was 13. This was shortly after my 'disturbed' next door neighbor broke into our house and smashed my prized triple pickup '67 Rickenbacker I had purchased from a kid at school. The Les Paul is still my #1when I perform. New Les Paul in 1973--$400. Time with my father driving 1+ hours to 'Ye Old Music Shoppe' in Marissa, Illinois, picking out my new guitar and then him taking me to lunch post-purchase (hamburger, onion rings and a Coke) ... priceless.

She looks like like it as well many scars from falling off guitar stands and lots of road wear but you never forget your first love. Still my favorite bass for me and thanks DAD I would not be the man or musician with out you

Lukather playing guitar is a great guitar player. Lukather playing a classic Gibson Les Paul is a guitar playing Great! Every Guitar Great has an Iconic playing moment. Lukather's is his lead solo on "Hold The Line". And that was with a Les Paul. It is such a great shame his collaboration with Ibanez didn't work out. His original vision for what eventually became the Ibanez RS1010SL must have been some special guitar. Pity it never panned out. And a pity he never went back to Gibson. And we should all love our Dads.

Hi Teaching... that’s so true...it’s so sad that so many kids these days are from a fatherless home. Not knocking the mothers at all... they do their best I’m sure but two parent homes ( when the parents are loving and supportive) are obviously the best. Thanks for watching... Joe (Just in case it comes up.... I know there are plenty of stories where one parent did a great job and all was great.)

When I was 12 years old, I had two best friends, we were a little trio, and they had gotten motorcycles, and I was odd man out. I wanted a little dirt bike soooo bad. That whole summer went almost by, with me clinging onto one or the other of my friend’s bikes as a passenger. That September, my Dad (yes, I capitalized Dad) came home with a brand new Honda dirt bike that he could not afford. I’m in my ‘60’s now, and still can’t reflect on it without welling up.
