I love watching this. It not only makes me smile and warms my heart, but it makes me chuckle. On the day Jeff was scheduled to do this he was really nervous and sorry he had agreed to do it. He was happy to answer people's questions about his playing, but he absolutely hated talking about himself. He wanted me to go with him, but we had a 2-year old and a newborn at home. Anyway, in this great video his incredible, warm, entertaining, and just plain cool personality comes through...as does his nervousness, which is apparent by his classic fidgeting. I am blessed to still see those fidgeting mannerisms, because Nico inherited them. By the way, when Jeff got home he told me all about the class. He had a wonderful time and was glad to do it for his Dad. He is desperately missed and always in our hearts...

+Susan Porcaro Goings Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful personal insight. Jeff is my greatest teacher and inspiration, he's the reason I became a drummer. I think his down to earth and humble personality comes through in his playing. There is such a warmth to his tracks and thats what spoke to me as a kid listening to him in the 70's with Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs and of course Toto. No-one had his groove, feel and warmth and as you said he seemed like such a cool dude! He is still my all-time favorite drummer, no-one compares, the man made the drums sing. I wish you and your family the best, thanks again!

Becker and Fagan would audition 14 of the best session guitarists in the world to record one part of one track on an album. Then they hear Jeff playing songs he never heard before with a couple guys he never played with in a club one night and immediately ask him to be the drummer for their whole tour. That’s a whole new level of greatness.

This is fantastic. I've known about Porcaro, studied some of his music - but I'd never heard/seen him do a clinic. I had no idea he was this humble, common-sense and even a little self-conscious. He sounds like the kind of guy I would want to buy a beer and hang around with, even if he'd never played an instrument. Great drumming wisdom. I can relate to so much of this...

My wife and I watched the debut of TV's "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour" in August 1971, and noticed that their drummer looked young enough to be a member of The Partridge Family. We became fans of the show and bought tickets to a Sonny & Cher concert on March 19, 1972 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where the duo introduced their 17 year-old drummer Jeff Porcaro to a packed Memorial Coliseum audience. Fast-forward 2 years and we're attending our first Steely Dan concert at the U. of Toledo on April 21, 1974, where we're surprised as hell to recognize Jeff as a second drummer alongside Jim Hodder. I still remember them playing the rest of the band off the stage following the final encore. I've yet to hear from another Jeff Porcaro fan who saw him in concert with both Sonny & Cher and Steely Dan.

@@alphonsoeffendy4184 Just dumb luck those first two times we saw Jeff in the early '70s. He was so good on Steely Dan's "Pretzel Logic" album tour that Becker & Fagen made him the featured drummer on their next album, 1975's "Katy Lied," and that got him the gig as studio and touring drummer on Boz Scaggs' Grammy-winning album, "Silk Degrees" (and all of this before he turned 22). The last time my wife and I saw Jeff in concert he was with his brothers Mike and Steve, when Toto played Salem, Oregon in 1985.

It was as if a lightning bolt of his genius had struck me with all its force. I'd conveyed these sentiments to his sponsors Pearl and Paiste back in the day hoping they'd be kind enough to send me out the 2 famous posters he was photographed for and they were happy to do so. I remember receiving them and feeling ecstatic. Miss you Jeff!

Gone 30 years ago today….blows my mind. I was in awe of his playing but then met him at the 88 NAMM Show. He was just the nicest coolest person. He was performing at the Paiste booth and me and my buddy were jammed in right next to his hi hat sitting on the floor. A Paiste rep came over and told us we would have to move, which meant leaving because the place was packed….we started to get up and Jeff said “it’s ok they can stay won’t bother me” he performed with bass and keys. ( Mike Porcaro and David Garfield I think). Great experience

Rare to hear a musical genius talk with such honesty and intelligence about life, people and with such humility. Sadly missed, but his special feel for music will live on forever.

I watched Rick Beato's interview with Steve Lukather and the way Steve talks about Jeff you KNOW that he's one of the all time greats. Guys like this don't come around often, enjoy them while you can

Jeff's humility is so freaking awesome. I never heard him speak before; only play. His humility and being real and not trying to act like he's galaxies beyond... It is very inspiring, and now from even a few minutes of this - I am definitely a fan... Hell Yeah, brother... and you're so friggin' good!!! 🔥💙

I love this guy! I think about him often, as I am a drummer too. His groove and feel is like no other. He lives on in our memories and through his wonderful music. His playing was very human and his personality came across clearly through his music. Jeff`s insights still inform us drummers today and he is still teaching us valuable lessons.

Ou man, there´s some big words of wisdom! Jeff is perhaps the greatest drummer of all time. He is funny and humble and he must have been a great guy to hangout with. I truly miss his playing. And now hear him talking, the tracks he played on are even more great!

He was just a born Prodigy, Bottom Line. No School/Teacher can teach you how to play or approach drums like he did. amazing. Tons & Tons of feel.

"born with it" and "natural" can only get you so far. You have to practice it, you have to play and learn, and having an instructor or schooling can be very important. Jim Gordon, maybe the top feel and groove drummer ever, had loads of natural talent *more than Jeff Porcaro??) and was a schooled percussionist and drummer, but he also spent his entire childhood PLAYING and developing. No substituting that, even Buddy Rich.

Jeff Porcaro a total legend, an inspiration for anyone wanting to play drums. R.I.P. He left behind a huge musical legacy. So many great songs he played on especially through the 80s.

I would love to hear his take on modern music and what has happened to live recorded rhythm sections. I still believe that you cannot imitate the feel, no matter how good the machines get.

Man, this is so great. What a gem of clip. This video shows what a great drummer Jeff was, but it also shows what an incredibly great guy he was. Bittersweet. This amazing reminder of how incredible Jeff was also serves to underscore how much it sucks that he's gone. Hard not to think about how much more music he should have made. We were all robbed, but none more than his family.
