Oh please do a complete set-up of XR18 to Reaper then demonstrate how to: record, play back, and playback while doing overdub in Reaper. A segment on routing matrices in both is much needed as well. Thank you for what you have posted to date. Subbed and liked!

I just spent a day working this out and then found this video. Good video. Could you update this regarding the later versions of X-AIR PC app. The in/outs on the X-Air PC 1.3 app needs some serious explaining. AUX channels, Buses, Fx buses. There is a real need for videos for home recording with DAWS for the X18 XR18. I find it very difficult to understand why Behringer has not addressed the home recording market with good tutorials. This is where the sales are gonna come from now. Not the live mixing market.

this is cool but when the x-air is setup for channel inserts using USB input, what happens if your computer crashes do you loose input signal on each channel ? it would suck at a live gig for signal to drop completely in the event your computer had issues... would be good if it could fall back to analog ins if it lost USB signal.. if you havent tested it you could run up some inserts and pull the USB cable to simulate a crash and see what happens..

Yes, you would use signal but your example is just one of many, many things that could go wrong within a system that could cuase interruption. A good engineer would flip to analog quickly AND would have tested the setup to make sure it was stable.

This is my first digital mixer.. It all makes sense when i use the analog mixer with patch cables for all this signal routing, but for some reason I am just getting confused as hell trying to figure out how to get what I want. It seems that the USB I/O is not making sense to me.. I suppose I don't have an actual question other than, how long is the learning curve for this kind of thing. Does it typically take ppl years to get solid understanding, because my music is seriously suffering as I'm lost in technical-frustration-ville... :-\

if you had the waves plugins couldn't you just use a daw to rout the plugins for live use or is there something special in the 600 dollar digigrid software.

+isaiah bernal MultiRack is specialized software made to be used as an FX rack. Not a bloated DAW with potential routing and latency issues. Digigrid is a hardware solution for running Waves and very expensive.

i'm hearing phase problems on the mic insert. looks like both signals are together. it's that normal?

Not at all. Try to track down where the original unprocessed signal is coming from. When you insert, you should not be hearing the original signal, that will certainly cause a phase sound.

I agree this is the 2nd or 3rd video I noticed something very strange, the last tutorial i.e. the combinator I also felt when you activated the multiband compressor your mic sounded much worse, im monitoring on very decent headphones also. phase issues or something, I can hear your breath between sentences breaking up also as I think it's gated and sounds un-natural, almost like breathing into a coke can, something very odd going on in the audio in the videos. I couldn't quite put my finger on it till Douglas mentioned "phase" issues.

Yes there are phase issues because he is monitoring the direct sound of the mic through the desk summed with the usb return through multirack. The second signal must have few miliseconds offset. we can hear it when he put the high pass all the way up.

Waves MultiRack works on Mac and PC. The XR18 will work with any ASIO or Core Audio compliant software DAW.

Whats the latency like for the performers and/or listeners when going through USB to the Waves software back into the desk?

You typically do not want to use USB inserted plugins on a channel if you are monitoring with that channel. It works fine for FOH, but not for monitors. Latency is determined by your computers cpu, host software, drivers, latency setting, and each plugin.

MusiciansPro I have a PC running Windows 7 which has impressively low latency in Pro Tools 9 running through a Digi 002, (the reason it's impressive is because before that I had a Mac running Logic and a PreSonus interface and was expecting Win to be worse).. I also have MixRack, is it true that USB isn't as good as firewire when it comes to latency? Also what do you mean by "do not want to use USB inserted plugins on a channel if you are monitoring with that channel"? Does that mean I can't use a Waves plugin on a vox mic, that is also being sent to a foldback wedge for the singer? I don't understand :-)

If you are doing live sound, and you have performers getting their monitor mix from your console - adding plugins will add too much latency for the performers in their monitors.

Is there a way I can PM you with my email so I can send you on my setup... Its quite simple... I need a vocal setup for two vocals with fx that give a lot of presence/power/punch... So far Im only getting a very distant vocal sound lacking presence... If I could achieve the sound I get from my analogue mixer on the xr18

Buffer sizes in most DAW software is measured in samples 1/48000 sec. So latency is set to as low as 128/48000 = 0.0026 seconds = 2.6ms

Yes - WAVES is a 3rd party plugin system. Any other system that uses the USB I/O to create inserts will also work. You just need to be sure the system is tuned for live/low latency performance.

tano gea You can, but it uses a lot of resources for just one computer. It is better to use two devices to do this. Latency is almost completely dependent on the power/speed of your computer.
