Welcome to this episode of 'Guitar Villains', my podcast that features some of the world's greatest guitar players in a way you've never heard before. Why Guitar "Villains", you ask? Because villains are cooler than heroes, it's just a fact. Today’s guitar villain is Tommy Emmanuel. One of the most musical guitar players you’ll ever hear, Tommy has been dropping the jaws of audiences for decades with this impeccable acoustic guitar playing that sounds more like an entire band than just one person. With flawless rhythm, unreal technique and a way of playing that just makes you laugh, Tommy’s musicianship is captivating in a way that will inspire you to pick up your guitar, or, maybe, just set it down and watch. Tommy Emmanuel is such an inspiration. The most beautiful thing about our instruments is the certainty you will improve with dedication and a focused practice routine. He is a shining example of this. Not many things in this world are so free from the whims of luck and circumstance.

Wow! Tommy has always impressed me with his playing and songs but I never knew he was so smart. He genuinely felt like a super smart guy and an adorable grandpa at the same time. I also love the fact that most of these "guitar gods", as we call them, are so humble in nature. These people are so down to earth and feel like normal people who you might bump into on a sidewalk. Mainstream popstars, rappers and DJs, take notes!

The most inspirational guitar gigs for me was seeing Tommy and Phil play at the Armadale Hotel in Victoria Australia throughout the 1980’s. Everything from Vangelis Chariots of Fire to ZZ Top to their original music… full band and bawdy jokes that can’t be repeated here. As a young guitarist I was floored completely and they made me work hard on my craft for the next 35+ years. They were and are to this day the most entertaining and talented musicians I’ve ever seen live. Terra Firma is a masterpiece of interplay between the brothers and funny as hell too. Check out the first solo on Terra Firma by another Aussie legend, Jack Jones aka Irwin Thomas, I believe a Bogner ecstasy was used in that session? I was lucky enough to play at Tommy’s world record attempt with a few hundred other guitarists in Melbourne Victoria back in the nineties too. He was also shredding on his Tele as well as his acoustic back then. Long live the Emmanuel family legacy.
