@kmccoy1
@kmccoy1 7 жыл бұрын
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that Phrygian Dominant and Harmonic Minor are modally related. To get the Phrygian Dominant, start with the Phrygian, and simply raise the third from a minor third to a major third. Or start with the Natural Minor, flatten the second, and raise the third one fret. Phrygian Dominant is absolutely one of the coolest neo-classical scales/modes!

In case anyone was wondering why it's called the Harmonic Minor: With the natural minor scale, you lose the great resolution when you go from the V chord to the I, which is created in major-scale harmony by the 3rd of the major V chord being a major 7th (aka the leading tone). The harmonic minor scale was thus designed to regain this harmonic effect, although it has its own drawback--a 3-semitone interval between the 6th and 7th--which yet another scale will solve...
@prinznevsky

Thank you for the comment. Too many cheesy guitar shredders are all about "exotic" scales, but don't want to actually understand the actual harmonic theory behind them. This guy probably doesn't realize that the actual pattern is a descending-only (ala melodic minor) due to the V-i "Baroque" change

Cool video! I'm a big fan of Trevor Rabin and he often ascends with the harmonic minor, pauses momentarily and descends with the minor pentatonic as fast as he can throw it out. He picks everything as well so it really snaps. A good example of this is at the end of "Hold On" on Yes' 90125 album. Keep up the good work!

go to udemy and buy his course ( they go on sale often for $15 Cad ) so super system 1 and 2 costs $30 remember them by this acronym. I D.ont P.articularily L.ike M.odes A L.ot Ionian ( major scale ) , Dorian ( a minor mode ), Phrygian ( also a minor mode ), Lydian ( Major mode ), Mixolydian ( also major ) , Aeolian ( the natural minor of Ionian ), and locrian ( diminished ) 7 notes, 7 modes.. IF you know the major scale then you already know all the modes... If you play G maj.. ( which is also Ionian.. same exact thing ) scale you have the notes G,A,B,C,D,E, and F# ( note that a g major cord is G,B,D The root, 3rd and 5th notes of the major scale ) So, G A B C D E F# Ionian A B C D E F# G is G dorian B C D E F# G A is G phrygian C D E F# G A B is G Lydian ETC ETC.. note that if you do NOT have a G cord ringing out as you play you will hear the mode as a SCALE and NOT a mode. this is the common effect that you hear when a lead player is playing modally as the Rythim guitar player is usually playing accompanying cords. Remember this sequence also ( its uber important...seriously ) Major, Min, Min, Major, Major, Minor, Diminished. Ionian mode ALWAYS follows this recipe. hence why the MODES are same MAj,min min maj maj min Diminished. this is to say that any root note you play ( in ionian ) the 4th ( directly below it ) is a major sound....

Awesome video. The phrygian dominant is the V mode of the harmonic minor scale. He showed the A harmonic minor scale in the 1st mode (a-maj7), after contrasting it against the natural minor scale. Then he showed it in the 5th mode (E7b9 or Fdim7/E). It's mostly used as phryg dominant in rock/metal/pop as it's other harmonic uses tend to be less friendly to delicate ears. The A harmonic scale can be used as a dominant scale over E7, G7, Bb7 and Db7 (from least to most dissonant), or over any of it's corresponding modal chords (A-maj7, B-7b5, Cmaj7+, D-7#11, E7b9, Fmaj7#9, G#dim7)

I wasn't liking what I was doing, so I had a friend come in and play on it for a bit. He started playing natural minor, and for me that was the ticket.. I knew/know one position of a pretty cool harmonic minor arpeggio, and applied it, and I captured some of that vibe, but I need to take it further to make it truly happening.

The Hungarian Dorian (I'm pretty sure its the 4th mode of the harmonic minor, I could be wrong), but it just sounds so sexy. That flat 5th and major 6th over a minor chords is just... so cool. #MartyFriedman

I'd say harmonic minor is in second place. Diminished minor 7th is my personal favorite for its "rootless feel" and neoclassical fugue FURY! Like you said, though, it's all subjective. Still my second favorite. Keep up the great videos.
