I think the reasons many people drop out of berklee is the opportunities that come by, you said it yourself, you dont NEED a degree to get in the music industry. I went to one of berklee's summer programs and my teacher there dropped out of berklee after about 3 and a half years, since he had the opportunity to tour and another semester cost a lot of money. I'm pretty sure John Mayer dropped out too, for a similar reason.

I'm fourteen so i know i shouldn't be too worked up about college, but my mom recently told me that my dad would eventually ask me what i wanted to do in life and what college i would love to go to. my mom told me to do my research and my dad would understand. I've been looking at berklee's courses and classes, even events that they have. I know many might say that I am too young to know what college I want to go to, but I Truly believe that if I want to pursue music, Berklee is the best school. The only thought that has worried me the most was what you talked about in your video. Music is a very fragile subject, it's more free and you can't just find the job that easily, it's kind of like a very thin rope. I'm afraid that even if I do get in, I wont find anything out there that will help me do what I want to, and the last thing I want is an"I warned you about this happening" speech. the one thing I know for sure is that I want to be able to help people the same way music helped me, using music. But not necessarily music therapy. I really liked this video, thank you for making it.

I'm the same age and I've been thinking about this since I was 12 so I understand. I would love to go to Berklees for Vocal and also an instrument (most likely piano or guitar). I'm actually working up on going for their Five week summer programmed when I'm 16 instead of getting a Sweet 16 party. I would really love to get to know you as you seem to be really interested in it and it would be great to be able to peruse such a dream and know someone cause two heads are better than one 👍🏾👍🏾
@michelle-yt2uo8 жыл бұрын
+sarah nottingham that would be amazing! I want to go to their five week program as well, but I live a bit far from Boston, and I'm not sure my parents would allow me to. I want to go mostly for vocals, but possibly more in songwriting/composing, and maybe guitar. I've been thinking about this mostly this year, but ive been constantly wondering and searching how to get in, and the different courses offered. I would love to get to know you as well. not a lot of people in my area talk about colleges or share the same interests.

The main takeaway is that if you're serious about music and work hard, you will find a career in music in one way or another! I'd recommend the 5-week program... Show this message to your parents and tell them it will be the best decision they ever made to send you to Berklee for the 5-week experience. Good luck! :)

I'm 23 and I started playing guitar 5 years ago. I think I'm a intermediate level player but feels like i'm stuck right know. For me it have been very difficult to practice guitar since I started playing at the same time I started college so I didn't had a lot of time to practice as much as I wanted. I'm a self taught guitarist and I learned a lot all this time but know I feel like I need a teacher to get to the next level. I always going to regret the fact that I didn't start playing guitar earlier, now i'm getting my degree on engineering but my passion is music. At least I can have the guitar as a hobby. Thanks for the video man, now i'm motivated to get a teacher and improve my skills, and who knows, maybe in the future I can live from music.

After years of trying to fit elsewhere, being afraid, I have come to the conclusion that above all else, taking care of myself needs to be priority. While I am still on that journey, I have fallen in love once again with music, and I have felt the same tug towards going to Berklee. I think it may take a couple years, but I want to try. I never went to Berkeley, but I've live about 20 minutes from the school my entire life. My favorite gear-buying seasons have always been December before Christmas break and late spring when people are graduating. Every year I'd buy an amp and to a lesser degree guitars and countless pedals and various equipment. Unlike the typical State schools like University of Massachusetts-Boston, a large chunk of students are from other states. There's always people graduating then moving back to their home or some other state. The need for money, space and to lighten their travel has always worked in my favor. I can always find things that I can pick up for a few hundred$ less than you can buy them used anywhere else.

It's not just Berklee. I study Music Ed. at Western Illinois University, and the music department's drop rate of freshmen alone is over 50% in the first semester. Many people do not realize the hard work that goes into studying music. It's admirable that so many people want to pursue music, but I feel many underestimate the hours that are really required. I don't know how rough it was for you at Berklee, but I know many kids at Western who only study music who end up very sleep deprived throughout the semesters.

I had a very very different experience. There were two guys that were there. The guy that was the main judge played piano rather than the guitar which made it very different imo. They were not as warm and welcoming as other experiences I have read about including this video. They even stopped halfway through my prepared piece (Lenny by SRV) for some reason. I didn’t even get to complete it, very strange, they did compliment that it was very good and that I played it well though. The one judge even said “Oh that’s a great tune!” When they asked what piece I had prepared. I did play it perfectly mind you and they definitely gave me positive feedback with most aspects except sight reading. The sight reading I totally bombed however I was able to identify the notes as I know how to read music. Even played some of the chords that were on the paper. Was able to play all of the 7 chords just fine. They asked how I learned Lenny and told them the main motif was taught by my teacher , but leaned the rest by ear which is the truth. Very very different experience. The improv went very well and they told me I was able to adapt to the random key changes well etc. During ear training the guy played phrases on the piano and I had to play them back, couldn’t get every note 100% and was then asked if I could sing them which I was able to do perfectly. The whole audition seemed very very rushed and almost as if the musicians were bothering them being there. This might have been because I auditioned in Philly as I don’t live close to Boston. If I don’t get accepted I will try again in Boston no doubt. I in no way expected this to be easy by any means whatsoever but from what I’ve gathered from other people I had a very different experience. They complimented my influences and said it was cool to see a guitarist mention Eddie hazel as they’ve never heard a guitarist mention his name. Also said I had a very good passionate bluesy sound/style and that the whole ear training thing can definitely be developed and taught to me no problem so I don’t know what to make of the whole thing. The interview was amazing and definitely felt like more of a conversation than interrogation, very nice experience. They also had a fender frontman as an amp which was strange because I play through a SF super reverb but that was no problem to play through. Have heard of people having the option of a few different amps that are close to what they own.

I'm on the path to experiencing similar struggles as I'm in a little music school with personal aims of entering a conservatory later, even after only starting piano at 18 last year. Also correct me if I'm wrong but in my head, guitar is an instrument capable of being mastered even as a latestarter. Anyway I hope you well.

Martini Henry Thank you brother much appreciated. Good luck to you and your journey as well. I actually used to play piano myself about 10 years ago but stupidly quit for the guitar. Played for years and studied classical music with a really great old Russian teacher. I still might get back into I miss it a ton. Personally for me guitar was way harder to learn because your fingers have to press down/fret the note to make the sound, it’s completely foreign at first. Piano you can simply press your finger and the key and the note desired is crystal clear, it’s much less tactile than the guitar. Both are equally as difficult to play proficiently though. Cheers!

I think why ppl generally go to college (especially creative field) is for networking. Its much easier then to look for job and collaborations and opportunities when u have already social bubble of needed field. When you on your own its way harder to find opportunities. I'm wanting to go to music school very much. I live in the midwest. There aren't a lot of music schools around me, and the one that is close by, isn't the greatest. I looked at Berklee kinda as a joke, but then saw what the audition actually entailed, and I was like, "Holy shit, I could actually do that." So now I'm actually considering at the very least trying to get in (cause why not). Unfortunately for you, I would not be going for guitar, but for piano (cause I'm going on ten years of piano playing). I'm really sure I wouldn't get in, but it'd be cool if I did. The thought of doing anything else but music with my life is terrifying.

First of all, I think you're NOT Nobody At All if you want to make a living out of music. That's a very passionate thing to think, living through music, so I recommen you definitely try that out, if you've been playing for that long you will totally get in my friend. Cheers! :)

During my audition which was actually about 1 month ago I was brought to the warm up room before the audition and my "guide" I guess you could say forgot that I was in there and came back about 40 minutes after so instead of a guitar instructor during my audition I was put in a room with a piano instructor and a gentleman taking notes. It was verrrry nerve racking being in the practice room for almost an hour. I thought I was done for ;-;

I'm hoping to audition to that school after this coming year of high school. I'm hoping to get an associate's degree in performance or anything jazz or blues related. I do understand that there are maybe hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people better than me, and it will be great to meet them. The one thing that scares me is the cost. I'll be paying off loans for the rest of my life for this school or filling out scholarships for a year. I hope I get accepted into that college or at least get the opportunity to audition and even if I don't get accepted, maybe they can lead me to a different music college

I'm in my final semester of college, so this unfortunately doesn't apply to me, but I appreciate the video. I remember in high school, I really wanted to go to Berklee (the audition would be on drums, not guitar since that was my main instrument at the time before guitar sort of took over), but after I visited there, I decided against it since a) I really didn't like the way the campus was set up, and b) I thought I would be making a generic "rocker" decision. In hindsight, based on what you're saying in here, getting in would have been pretty easy, since at the time in my senior year of high school, I was taking AP Music Theory (which is one of the best decisions I've ever made in my musical life). Would it have been worth it? It's hard to say, since that question of "Do you love [instrument] or the idea?" To be honest, I love both. But I'm feeling pretty comfortable (more or less) at the moment, and that's what matters.

So I’m 15 and I just started playing guitar and piano and I would like to pursue music in anyway possible. I’m not the best at piano or guitar but I’m falling in love with both of them and I want to further my music education. I just need any types of tips you all can give me. Anything that you can give me tips about will help. Thanks.

Hi I'm 15 years old right now and I play guitar and drums and piano and I realllly want to go to berklee to pursue my love for music on guitar but my father is concerned I won't be able to find a job after getting the music degree. Does anyone have any tips please?
@swaggboy1428 жыл бұрын
I'm 16 and guitar is my life I'm considering going to college for music I think you should follow your dreams but make you have a backup plan if it doesn't work out like getting a "minor degree"(not sure what the word is) in something else so you have more options
@jamesoconnor13688 жыл бұрын
It all depends on what you want to do after studying. Session work/ songwriting would be a good option. For example, you play more than one instrument, so composing would be something you could get into. Ads, Video game music etc. is worth decent money. There is a career in music, and don't let anyone (including your parents) tell you otherwise. Yes you may have to hold down a second job to support your career, but it'll be worth it if you work hard at it. However (shot in the dark), if you write music, have you considered taking a songwriting course? I don't know what country your from but where i live (UK) many unis offer this course, and for those who want to write music (which if your successful, can result in big royalties) can be good. so in short, tell your dad he's wrong lmao. At the end of the day, wouldn't it be worth talking to the tutors at the unis with your dad there (at their open days) about this sort of thing?
@pathaleyguitar97635 жыл бұрын
That's not remotely true. You can totally get a job. You now have a 4-year degree, and that just opened plenty of doors. 1. (4 year degree not required) Honestly, the most stable gig you could possibly get is to join a military band. This is what I did, and it's not at all what you would think it is. You play real book tunes, bruno mars, and freakin metallica. It's an awesome experience and you get to go to south korea, japan, and all around the US. And if you're hot shit, (which, graduating from berklee, you would be) they'll let you go to Europe. 2. Cruise line musician(4 year degree not required). This is something I really want to do. Travel the world while playing music for 3 hours a day with almost all of your costs of living paid for, with an additional 2500 a month to pocket and do whatever you want with. This one is also great for networking and getting connected with people in LA that are doing the session work. I have a few friends that got their foot in the door in LA by meeting cruise line musicians. 3. Wild card: ESL teacher(4 year degree IS required). Now hold on here...we had a degree in music but now we're doing ESL. WTF? This is actually a pretty good way to go, for 2 reasons. 1: the hours are usually only about 32 hours a week, which leaves a bunch of time for music. 2: You can go to a country and immerse yourself in their music culture. Wanna go to brazil and study with Brazilian percussionist? Teach english. Wanna go to china and learn the er hua? Teach English. Wanna go to Japan and learn that cool 3-string guitar instrument? Teach English 4. Well let's say you have your degree and realize music sucks dick and you don't want to be a musician. Well then fuck it, P.O.S.T! Police officer school! Anyone with a four year degree can go to post, and sure, it's not music, but it's a decent paying job, and beggers can't be choosers, or in this case, musicians. Note: All of the options I gave you above are only the ones that are the stable, guaranteed jobs, but they are not the only jobs you can get. Before I even had a degree, I was playing in a variety of bands and making pretty good money playing a variety of gigs. Additionally, if you're hot shit with social media, you can probably find a way to get a good amount of people wanting to take lessons with you. And finally, if you spend enough years playing on cruise lines, military bands, and gigging for people, you'll probably end up in LA or Nashville if that's really what you wanna do, which would probably be the dream job, or at least it's mine. Hope this long-winded message helped. Just don't wanna see somewhere not pursuing music because they're discouraged by people that have no idea what the opportunities in this industry are and therefore assume there are none.

Man how do I pay for this.That’s the ONLY problem I have. My commitment and love for drumming is there and will never be questionable, it’s just THE PAY
