"Fun" pretty much sums up what I love about EVH's playing. While being very technically amazing it's also always soaked with personality and a tongue-in-cheek whimsy about it, which is way harder to achieve than simply shredding...letting yourself come through in the music is something few musicians really pull off.
@shakebabyhitler2 жыл бұрын
i agree. I think a lot of Dimebag's earlier stuff had that "whimsy" too. Sounds killer yet fun.

For some VH1 tone stick the phaser in front of the overdrive, add an EP booster and use some plate reverb at the end of the chain instead of delay. Also, be sure to keep phaser and flanger out of the effects loop and in front of your amp 🤘🏻🎸

Bolt Lil Wayne's playing is so unique, full of feel, and extremely technically challenging. Nobody even knows what his habits really are, because when he plays his playing has the ability to wipe all memory from your brain, so you can't even remember what you just heard or saw. Incredible, if you ask me.

Pedals are a must if you want to capture the attitude of a player. If you use Overdrive and bend a note ,it gives much more feel and opens your emotions up.I use a few.A Boss EQ,A EVH phase 90,A Boss Super OD,most of the time. Occasionally some chorus,flange and a wah,seldom however. Most of my tone comes out of my MarshallJVM210 100 watt and a 4x12 slant front cabinet. The tonal varieties of the 9 channel settings are unreal!! Marshall ,in my opinion still is King!! For a Meaty sound David you need SPEAKERS!!!. Pedals are a matter of taste ,as far as what sound you want.

It's important to note that Eddie's attitude was born out of necessity. He has said that, when young, he couldn't afford effects pedals and so he had to invent "neat noises" to be interesting. (See the Smithsonian interview for more). Also, the over-the-top aspect matched David Lee Roth with echoes of an old-time Vaudeville act. So, I don't think it was ever "I'm Eddie Van Halen" but rather an all-out effort to win over the crowd.

This is a good video, it has good tricks !!! But there is one thing that catches my eye, in a exactly EVH tone, the MXR pedal and flanger are set before the distortion, in essential in the LP VH1 is this one of the settings wich him uses. It is a plexus tone with these pedals on the face of the amplifier and an Echophlex delay in the return transport It is good to remember, Eddie van Halen uses a "Dummy load" inserted into the amplifier, making it possible, to also have more distortion with low volume with the Marshall plexy (eddie don't use a overdrive pedal to make more gain on the Long play of the VH1). Hugs!!!
@hadjeecovero35164 жыл бұрын
vai also did that tapping technique sir! "building the church"

Then theres other habits like the use of symmetrical "scales"(like in i'm the one, jump, icecream man) and those classic van halen triad chords (unchained, panama). Also the palm muted riffs and of course the amazing rhythmic swing he had.

I call what Eddie Van Halen did was pulling things out of the neck, anyone that picks up a guitar and tries to play is actually trying to pull sounds out of the neck of the guitar, most people back before Eddie were still working to pull music out of the neck in the conventional way but Eddie pulled things out that peaked everyone's intrest, the things he did were always on the neck but most guitar players never thought to use them, but I believe Eddie was constantly searching for what ever was possibly a useable sound, things other people might have run across and just thought nah that's not how you play guitar, but Eddie along with searching for different sounds out of his amps combined it all and pushed everything to the limits that he could think of, this gave others the idea to experiment with their guitar's to see what they could come up with, I remember before Eddie came out guitar was kind of getting boring and nothing really new sense Hendrix, then all of a sudden out if nowhere Bam along comes Eddie like Steve Via said Eddie not only knocked the door down he crashed through it and splintered it.
