This is brilliant - I'm really glad I found your channel. So many tutorials on youtube are difficult to follow, and don't seem to give answers to the obvious questions (e..g how to record midi and audio simultaneously). Plus audio recording is notoriously opaque for those without help or a natural knack. I wanted to use my digital piano as a DX7, so now I can do that with a VST synth, and also have the piano audio to double up with....perfect

YOU ARE MY HEROINE! I have a Yamaha DTX 2.0 connected to a Roland TD-30 via MIDI. I also have a Zildjian Gen16 module that only outputs analog audio. My MIDI signals are going into a laptop with ToonTrack Superior Drummer 3 for voicing. Until now, I was using the headphone output of the laptop going into an analog mixer along with the Gen16 audio. The headphone jack was NOISY - it would pick up electrical interference from the laptop and sound horrible. Now, with a USB audio interface (and this video), I can get clean audio into Reaper. I'm not sure if my laptop will be able to handle Reaper and Superior Drummer simultaneously, but I think getting a USB interface will definitely help with eliminating the electrical interference plaguing me. Thank you SO MUCH!

Hi Jane - just wanted to say thank you for this brilliant solution to a longstanding problem / question I've had about the best way to get a MIDI version of my piano takes. I had been trying to convert keyboard recordings in Reaper and always wound up with unsatisfactory results. This approach really solves it! I just tried it with my Roland RD-700NX and it worked perfectly - just brilliant! I appreciate your help so much... John from Seattle

AAAAAARGH !!! Another DAW session ending in frustrated misery. I’m determined tho. I’m going to read your guide linked in the description. I recorded a keyboard track, then opened a new track for the MIDI, then set the routing window on the midi track to receive the input from the keyboard track. No info showing up on the midi track. I saw a wordless video demonstrating this, but I can’t get it working. Btw, THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDS ! You are so generous with your time !

Thank you for this tutorial! Let me know if I’m right on these questions, please: 1) The Scarlett 2i2 inputs are each balanced but mono, so I could not use a Y type cable (from the 2 TS outputs of my DP to a single TRS input) to get stereo sound, and that would be even wrong because I would send 2 positive signals at once, getting a phase conflict at my 2i2 jack and (in the best case) just a very distorted mono sound. If I’m right, I should choose: mono recording (using a single TS cable connected from my DP L/mono output), in case I wanted to record my singing at once (using the other input with XRL cable), then panning tracks, or just a DP stereo recording (using 2 single TS cables) so that for my singing I should record it separately (before or after). 2) On the midi track of the piano, I could edit velocities, lengths, etc., but the audio piano track rest obviously the same. So, if I’m interested in getting the sound from my DP through that midi edition (on Reaper), provided that I can monitor what I do (sending midi signals to the DP and the outputs of this DP to the 2i2, as described above), a simultaneously audio recording would not make sense: I should first record just a midi track and the audio one only after editing, right? Thank you very much in advance, and greetings from Argentina!

It should be pointed out that in this scenario we are actually recording the built-in factory ROM sound of the Roland using its analog OUT to interface IN on Track 2. The VSTi piano (on Track 1) is providing its sound to "monitor", which is similar to the Roland ROM, but that is not being printed as WAV audio only as MIDI notes. The downside is we've tied up all the analog INs of the interface which could be used for vocal and or a real instrument(s). I would propose getting rid of the analog cable completely. Choose your VSTi instrument for Track 1 as a grand piano (the one you have or there or are many good free ones like PianoOne or B3 Organs or Wurlitzers or what have you). Now create Track 2 and switch its recording to STEREO AUDIO (by right clicking ARM button), BUT THEN, and this is important and why Reaper is so great, just drag the SEND from Track 1 to Track 2 in the mixer. You will have effectively "routed" the analog sound which your ears are hearing from your chosen VSTi piano "in the box" as an audio signal to Track 2 and both record together when you hit record. Look Ma, no audio cables.
Wonderful content! Thank you. How would I record piano and voice separately and then later join them into one file that I could share with someone?

I was surprised to see that the DAW used the Roland sound for the MIDI track even before the audio track was created. I'm trying to figure out how my setup will work and that is a great detail to know. I'm also curious if you were to record just the MIDI, do you also get the Roland sound as well as the data?

I have just found out my Yamaha Genos does not have an Audio Interface, which I find rather surprising considering this is Yamaha's Flagship Workstation, but rather than buy more equipment ie the audio interface, and bearing in mind my Genos can record audio from a MIDI file onboard, does that mean I can first record my tracks in MIDI through the USB host on my Ipad into my DAW software which is FL Studio, then save once I am happy it sounds the way I want it to sound, then transfer that MIDI back to the Genos for converting into Audio (long winded way of going about it I know, but sounds feasibly to me) As the Genos itself records both MIDI and AUDIO some would argue, why then would I want the external software, the answer of course would be because I want to be able to mess with the MIDI once created eg either taking out or inserting sections or maybe copying a section to insert elsewhere to make the track longer etc, which I cannot do on the keyboard itself. I hope you can answer this for me. Many thanks.

Thanks Jane. I really appreciate this guide. I just started using Reaper, but I don't know who to ask about working with MIDI on long songs with many synthesizers, and I am not sure Reaper can do what I have in mind. Does anyone have experience working on long MIDI files? I often improvise symphonic or progressive rock pieces that could last 45 minutes or longer on my own keyboard synthesizers, but I would like to correct mistakes without having to learn the whole piece. Time is not easily available for me, so recording both audio and MIDI seems ideal. If I connect my synthesizers to my computer with the Reaper DAW, can I edit synthesizer settings besides basic note and velocity data? Can I edit other data like cutoff frequency or envelope data, or do I need a plug in? I'll probably use the audio recordings for the most part, and use MIDI only to correct problems that I cannot fix in the audio tracks. Tempo management would be another issue, since I often change tempo, and often do not use a drum machine. I frequently discover very interesting music while just improvising with synthesizers, and it would be nice to make corrected recordings from that. Music is just a hobby for me, and I don't have much time to work on long pieces. I'm curious if anyone has found an easy routine for working with external synthesizer MIDI editing. -Mark

But I am stumped. How do I connect the USB to my Scarlett (18i8 2nd gen.) when it just has the 5-pin midi in and out ports on the back??
@MusicRepo5 жыл бұрын
Hi, you will have to connect the P71 directly to a USB port on your computer if you want to use it as a MIDI device and run it alongside your Scarlett. If you want to record the SOUND on the P71 then you will have to take the audio output from the headphone port on the keyboard and use a TRS to twin TS Y cable to connect it to left and right inputs on the Scarlett. So you will be able to record audio and MIDI at the same time if that is what you want to do. Just not all through the Scarlett interface.

I don't think there is ... as soon as you plug anything into headphone socket it silences speakers. If I want to record my Go:Piano then I take the audio out from the headphone out to line inputs on interface, then direct monitor though the interface. Your other option is to use a headphone splitter and then connect headphones to one of the outputs, while taking line out through the other ... but that is not going to play through the speakers.

MIDI editing is much easier than audio editing. You may want a recording of yourself, but also the MIDI data so you can use it for a different voicing, or add to the arrangement in different ways. Plus a lot of people asked if you could do this so I said yes you can here is how 😀

Will an audio interface solve the problem or do I need anything else? also I have a Usb to host connection via my keyboard and imac - do I need to change this? p.s. atm I can see notes being played and recorded however I can't hear the sound of it.
@MusicRepo5 жыл бұрын
Hi, an audio interface will solve the problem of recording the sound of your keyboard, but if your software is only MIDI, then it won't record the sound, you'll need software that records both audio and MIDI. on a mac you could use Garageband, Logic but the full version (I am assuming MIDI version only records MIDI?) or Reaper, which is the software I use in this demo. If you buy an audio interface such as the Focusrite I use, then it comes with Lite free versions of recording software that would do the job. You can continue to use the USB to host connection to do the MIDI recording. You can read more about Focusrite 4i4 3rd Gen, which is the newest version of the interface I've got, here on Amazon (affiliate link) amzn.to/2SyOiND

@@MusicRepo thanks for replying, yes I have the full version logic. Which cable do I need to record the soundx just a standard jack? Because I see you use a jack to double jack...? I don't know the name of that cable. Sorry i am very beginner with this.

How can you hear your piano even when the headphone jack is in use? Is there a way you can still hear your piano when you're playing it from the piano's speaker itself?
@enocvt5 жыл бұрын
Not from the piano speakers, but from the interface (headphones or speakers)

Hi, yes, you need to direct monitor ... I am about to make an updated video on recording your keyboard. Look out for it!

Just getting started. Using a Dell intel i3 running windows 10. Will I be able to run Reaper on this computer?
@MusicRepo5 жыл бұрын
Hi, I have had a quick scout around the Reaper site, but cannot seem to find detailed System Requirements... a few threads on Reddit etc seem to suggest that Reaper is very well optimised and will run efficiently on most computers. The thing that will take up more processing power is any plugins you want to use. So anyway you can download the software for an extended 60 day evaluation and really give it a good testing on your computer.

can you imput MIDI with, lets say, a tablet or the mere computers keyboard?
@MusicRepo5 жыл бұрын
You can definitely input MIDI from your QWERTY computer keyboard, sometimes you have to enable this in the DAW software. I don't know if you can use a tablet as a controller ... it's not something I've tried!

Madam could you please tell me how to record music with midi controller in audacity a free online software.
@MusicRepo5 жыл бұрын
Hi, if you only have a MIDI controller, you cannot use it to record in Audacity. You will need some kind of MIDI software. You could try something like Pro Tools First (free) www.avid.com/pro-tools-first or Studio One Prime (also free) shop.presonus.com/Studio-One-4-Prime If you need to know more about the difference between MIDI and Audio: www.musicrepo.com/what-is-midi/

Do you mean for the audio recording or the MIDI? To record piano: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHunZ4WClJesd8U and to make MIDI connection: kzbin.info/www/bejne/enOof2qPadp8i5I

@@MusicRepo Yeah so the chord plugs from the piano to Focusrite , then what chord is from focusrite to the computer. Just the USB? - Love the videos! thanks

How can i do this on FL studio 20?
@MusicRepo4 жыл бұрын
I don't use FL Studio, but I am sure that assuming you have the version that records audio, you could have two tracks recording, one MIDI and one audio ... you'll have to check out FL Studio videos for how to do this though

What if I can’t hear my piano playing
@markw61364 жыл бұрын
Mike, I had to check my cables, if they're alright. Then go Reaper\Options\Preferences\Audio\Devices. Check your Audio system is pointed to ASIO or the driver Focusrite (or your audio interface) is using. ASIO driver drop down will point to Focusrite USB 2.0 audio driver. Then check your Midi Device settings. Make sure your keyboard is enabled under Midi inputs and outputs.

Thank you, very clear. Can you remind me how I record a voice on my Yamaha piano while listening to my logic recording. I want to add a 'live' viola to an existing project, but can't remember how!
