What I love about this soundtrack, is that it sticks to a theme that fits in the context of the Calamity lore... the feeling of melancholic determination. It even says it on the title of the first song you listen to "Tale of a cruel world", giving a sense of wonder. It just beckons anyone to adventure, but has hints of something grander underneath by use of the church bells, and with the slow strings also tells you that you might not like what you discover; of not only the horrors you fight, but also yourself. Every bit of the songs just keep to the same theme of melancholy, danger, mystery, and adventure into one package. Not only that, it also gives a psychological effect of wearing you down until you feel lethargic during the lulls of the soundtrack. And all of it tells of a story, of the "Hero", the Witch, and the Tyrant King, on a never-ending war that sends Terraria to its knees. Doubts are grieved, pain is expected, and death is not an escape, because everyone knows that the "Hero" cannot die, including their enemies. All the "Hero" has to do is give up, to leave Terraria to the Tyrant and live a normal life, but are *you* one to give up? The music shows great strife, but also motivates you to keep going despite being an impossible goal... and this is why when I play this mod, I listen to the music, because without it's just not the same, Calamity wouldn't be this great without the soundtrack period. And I hope this mod gets the attention it deserves despite some flaws.

What I really love about the Calamity OST is how it not only sounds incredible, but it tells a genuine story without the aid of the game. It's a shame it's arranged the way it is on spotify, as there are songs that appear after Yharons themes that really shouldn't be there, like the Astral Infection/upper abyssal themes. Even despite this, you can hear how the music progresses, hinting at things to come. Storms before the Catastrophes is brilliant, as it not only brilliantly caps off Open Frenzy, but gives the listener a roadmap of what they can expect next, with a little of Providence's theme, followed by DoG and then finally Yharon. And Catastrophes before the Calamity follows suit, giving us a little taste of what would eventually become Draedons theme, followed by a reminder of what is about to come. It's brilliant.

@@Junistheog There's a certain level of beauty in this theme. It marks the point when Yharim's war is starting to turn against him, because while Providence was a thorn in his side and The Devourer of Gods was essentially his temporary pet killer that he didn't fully trust, Yharon was different. Calamitas was an angry and ambitious killer that Yharim turned into a monster with her own anger. Draedon wasn't exactly disloyal, but he was reclusive, secretive, and mysterious, and that's a big no no for a paranoid conquerer, especially when they're building the weapons that can easily be turned against you. However, Yharon was Yharim's loyal companion who saved his life when he was a boy, and that dragon was his closest friend, and the only being within his inner circle that he fully trusted. It's highly likely that Yharim was consumed by sadness, anger, and grief after he learned that Yharon fell. No doubt, that's when the rivalry between him and the player became personal, and Yharim was ready to throw everything he had at you, even if it meant losing everything.

To me, the entire Astral Infection themed songs are just perfect. Heaven's Hell-sent Abomination and all the themes derived from it alone just sets a mood for a beautiful alien-like environment that is holding a sinister yet apathetic secret. A perfect piece for the Astral Infecrion itself, but also for any type of otherworldly entity that isn't immediately terrifying; like if Cthulhu hid his true form.

My favorite part of the calamity ost is that each boss theme fits the boss absolutely perfectly. Desert Scourge is most likely going to be the first boss you fight, so he has an almost hopeful feel to his song, as you’re just starting out on your journey. Crabulon is kinda a joke boss, so he has kinda a joke theme. Also crab so crab snappies. The perforators are bloody abominations of flesh and sinew, so give them a super evil, super dark death metal theme. The Hive Mind is a dark, evil being, in control of a creeping corruption set to take over everything. He has an equally evil theme to accompany him. Slime god is literally the god of slimes, which do a lot of jumping, so give him a heavy hitting beat to accompany those massive impacts. Cryogen is essentially an ice elemental but turned up to 10, so he gets a fittingly icy sounding theme. He also moves extremely unpredictably, so the drums stutter like there’s no tomorrow. The brimstone elemental’s theme is as sad as it is because of her lore, where she lost everything she once had. The aquatic scourge is canonically very closely related to the desert scourge, so he gets a remix of the desert scourge’s theme. The genre is liquid DnB because, well, I don’t think I need to explain why. Calamitas’s theme is so dramatic because she acts as a teaser for the final boss, which is also why their themes sound remarkably similar. The leviathan trilogy is the theme of two different entities: the Leviathan (obviously) and Anihita (which I probably spelled wrong). Their lore lies in the fact that they were two different creatures from the sea who were in need of help. The leviathan was aging, and couldn’t feed itself, while Anihita was is a situation similar to the brimstone elemental: losing everything she once had. That’s also why songs one and two sound somewhat sad. (Also, that synth is supposed to be Anihita singing). Then the big mama jamba comes in as the leviathan and starts doing her thing (aka ripping the player twelve simultaneous new ones) which is why that guitar starts up there. Astrum Aureus is a robot corrupted by an otherworldly virus. That super aggressive synth at the beginning is the robot part, and the fact that it sounds like doom music is from the alien virus part. Astrum Deus is the god of the aforementioned cosmic virus. That’s why he shares similarities with Astrum Aureus. The Plaugebringer Goliath is a giant mechanized honeybee equipped with bioweapons, nuclear bombs, and the hatred of about a thousand angry wasps. That’s the reason for the super synthetic sound of the song, and also for that buzzyness. Ravager is a construct of bone and death designed to kill, maim, and murder the forces of whatever is thrown at it. That hint at a major key comes from the fact that it’s technically supposed to be on your side, but that hatred has made it completely indifferent about who it kills. Providence is a giant fire moth that wants to set the world on fire and watch it burn, potentially at the same time. She is disgusted by both good and evil, and wants the world to become nothing but indifferent ash. That celestial feel at the beginning of the song is due to her divine nature. The profaned guardians are essentially her underlings, and they do whatever she wants them to. Their theme is essentially a more synthetic version of providence’s theme. Polterghast is a conglomeration of souls furious at a tyrant who tormented them when they were alive, driving them to seething madness and unrelenting hatred. That ghostly arpeggio at the beginning is because, well, *ghost.* The old duke is old. Okay there is more to him than that. He’s supposedly very wise and very, very angery. So, like any grumpy old man, he’s gonna give you a whoopin’ for steppin’ on his lawn. Therefore: VERY ANGRY GUITAR. The Sentinels are the personal minions of the Devourer of Gods (aka DoG), which is why they share major parts of his theme. The Devourer of Gods, a giant worm capable of ripping holes in the fabric of space time and ripping apart deities with the intent of eating them. The grandiose theme fits him not only because of his personality, but also because he was the first boss ever added to the mod. Dragonfolly actually used to be another joke boss, but was changed to be at least a little more serious. He has one of the weirdest, most unpredictable AIs in the game, so the fast paced and rapidly changing feel of its theme fits it to a tee. Yharon is the faithful companion of the big bad of the mod, Yharim. He is loyal to a fault and will lay down his life in service of his master. The first song gets across the dragon part, while the second gets across the loyal companion part. Supreme Calamitas. The as-of-now final boss of the mod. A witch with mastery over the forces of brimstone and necromancy, forced into the servitude of Yharim against her will. She is incredibly powerful, but her backstory is incredibly tragic. All these aspects come through in her theme, the power comes through the metal parts, the final boss aspect comes through in that insane choir, and the ending is sad due to the pain she has endured throughout her life, only finding peace after you defeat her in combat. DM Dokuro is an incredibly talented composer who I look up to for so many reasons. He may have left the community, but his memory lives on in the themes of each and every boss to hold one of his songs. o7 Also this was way longer than I ever intended Jesus Christ Edit: I forgot the adult Eidolon worm. It’s a remix of the lower abyss theme, made extra intense because your chances of beating this thing are about zero.

For anyone who may be curious, here's a list of every theme in the video (which is not every theme in the mod) and where it comes from. Most of these are boss themes, but they're somewhat out of order. Some are biome themes, and a handful are unused. I've kept the themes in the order in which they appear in the video. Hopefully I got them all, let me know if I missed any. Minor spoiler warning: the names of bosses will be given, and the fact their fights have phases will be mentioned if relevant. Also, some locations will be named. The first is the title screen theme: Tale of a Cruel World - Title Screen The following are enemy themes. All are bosses unless otherwise specified: Guardian of the Former Seas - Desert Scourge 1NF3S+@+!0N - Crabulon Blood coagulant - The Perforators The Filthy Mind - The Hive Mind Return to Slime - The Slime God Antarctic Reinforcement - Cryogen Left Alone - Brimstone Elemental Outcast of the Sulphurous Sea - Aquatic Scourge Raw, Unfiltered Calamity - Calamitas Silence before the storms - {unused} Siren's Call - when ??? is nearby (a particular enemy that acts as a boss summon) Siren's War Cry - Anahita (before the Leviathan appears) Forbidden Lullaby - Anahita and Leviathan (after the Leviathan appears) Cosmic Disgust - Astralgeldon Slime (a removed boss) Interstellar Stomper - Astrum Aureus Pest of the Cosmos - Astrum Deus Fly of Beelzebub - The Plaguebringer Goliath Open Frenzy - Ravager Storms before the Catastrophes - {unused} Unholy Ambush - The Profaned Guardians Unholy Insurgency - Providence, the Profaned Goddess Feral Amalgamation - Polterghast Toxic Wisdom - The Old Duke Servants of the Scourge - Sentinels of the Devourer (kinda. There's 3 of them, and 3 variants of this theme actually play in game) Scourge of the Universe - The Devourer of Gods (phase 1) UNIVERSAL COLLAPSE - The Devourer of Gods (phase 2. And yes, it's all uppercase) Murderswarm - The Dragonfolly Infernal Catharsis - Jungle Dragon, Yharon (phase 1) Roar of the Jungle Dragon - Jungle Dragon, Yharon (phase 2) These play when you're in a certain biome: The Step Below Hell - Brimstone Crag Heaven's Hell-Sent Gift - Astral Infection (surface) (this theme has been replaced in-game) The Heaven-Sent Abomination - Astral Infection (surface) (replaced Heaven's Hell-Sent Gift) Treasures Within the Abomination - Astral Infection (underground) sanctuary - Sunken Sea Hadopelagic Pressure - Abyss (upper 2 layers) void - Abyss (4th, the lowest, layer) More enemy themes follow: Threats of the Ocean Floor - Adult Eidolon Wyrm Catastrophes before the Calamity - {unused} Stained, Brutal Calamity - Supreme Calamitas Eulogy for the Ego - {unused, as far as I can tell. The wiki doesn't even list it. On DM DOKURO's channel, it seems to be a variant of Scourge of the Universe) Finally, the trio of themes involving storms, catastrophe, and calamity, are "interludes", meant to be listened to at certain points in the game, but unused in-game

The ending of Stained, Brutal Calamity always gives me the feeling of victory, but at a significant loss. Like ashes coming down as the protagonist sits there all bloodied up and his greatest foe lying lifeless in front of him. The world around him is burning, the sky is red with fire, buildings are destroyed, and the protagonist can't even stand because of how exhausted he is. But he has won, and he is taking in the burning world around him. The major key piano and the bells ringing give off the sound of triumph, but that measure of dissonance tells you that he has suffered greatly to get to this point, raising the question of if it was all worth it in the end.

What I absolutely love about DM DOKURO is his theming. I'll reel off a few. First, with Guardian of the Former Seas and Outcast of the Sulphurous Sea. I like to call Outcast the rehydrated version of Guardian (and, if you play the game, the names relate to the lore :) ) Second, with Wasteland and Toxic Wisdom. Toxic is just Wasteland revamped; made into a rock track (idk genres, but you get the gist). Listen very closely to the trumpet solo in Toxic. On that note, the Acid Rain theme is another revamp of Wasteland, more on the EDM side (again, idk genres). Once again, the song names relate to actual places and bosses in the game. Third, with Raw, Unfiltered Calamity. It is a combination of previous songs in the OST (all from bosses), whether in actual notes that were transposed, or just the style. Here are a few to listen to: Guardian and Outcast in the beginning (melody?), Blood Coagulant in the background (guitar rhythms), Antarctic Reinforcement (style of drums), and Left Alone flute solo (style). I left out a few, see what you can find :) At the end, it introduces Calamitas' theme, which we see again in Stained, Brutal Calamity. Fourth, with Interlude #2 (Storms before the Catastrophe), it reflects Ravager's theme a lot (Open Frenzy). With Interlude #3 (Catastrophes before the Calamity) again we see Calamitas' theme, hinting at what is to come. Finally, with Pest of the Cosmos and The Heaven-Sent Abomination, Pest is a revamp of Abomination, and seeing how it is the biome's biggest boss, it makes sense. I skipped quite a few, so see what you can find on your own. :)

It makes you feel a curiousity to investigate, with the echo making it feel like its coming from somewhere distant and hidden behind a heavy fog. This gives it the chance to pounce. Siren’s Warcry. It opens with a drum like a punch straight to the face. It makes you realize that this beauty was a real threat with intense power behind it. However, it stops itself from truly going over the top. With quite a constant and consistent tempo. Much like how there is still something far more dangerous further below. FORBIDDEN LULLABY. The section has an intense in-your-face opening. Much like how the leviathan lunges out of the water to join its comrade in battle. The immense size of it makes you feel like you are up against something grand. Something mighty and ancient. This is a battle that will give you an adrenaline rush like never before. The addition of the electric guitar in this section amplifies this feeling. The creature is slow, but packs a punch and is constantly on the offensive. And then the climax. The leviathan, who had arrived to save its comrade, is in need of help. The only way to defeat this enemy is to work together. Giving it their all and putting both of their lives in danger. All to save each other due to the bond they had formed.

You should check out the Risk of Rain OSTs. They are really good and there's even a video by the composer that goes through all the little intricacies in each track.

Dokuro has truly made something that is beyond its purpose but was greeted with pressure by the Terraria community frequently asking for more. Some people didn't see how lucky they were to have such an awesome person that dedicated real hours into these songs and how they fit the Calamity's purpose almost perfectly. One day I want to make songs as incredible as these.

2:17:18 makes me almost cry every single time, especially with the context of the mod's story At the end of the song, "I feel like we just won something"... gameplay wise yes, story wise no Also fun fact: the choir actually has lyrics here! They're almost unintelligible to me, but there's a few youtube videos with subtitles for it and they add a lot to the song I'd also like to see you check out terraria's ost itself

@@averageuraniumconsumer4856 I am not, and especially wasn't at the time of writing that comment, old enough to have any major life events to feel accomplished over. Like, literally the only thing at that stage of my life would be difficult accomplishments in either games/competitions or personal goals. I don't like almost every form of competition, nor have I had anything I really felt like I needed to work towards personally. I don't see how doing the most difficult skill based thing I had done in my life up to that point by far being the most accomplished I felt is sad.

A note while on a hour and 2 mins in If I recall, the bells referred to by the calamity mod community as the 'calamity bells' are used mostly in the post moonlord bosses so it's fitting that they'd be put in the interlude that would happen after moonlord. They make each theme more grand and powerful, a warning of the danger to come.

Fantastic reaction, Dan. Watching you react to the really meaty sections of the guitars made me chuckle at how much you were enjoying them. While it isn't exactly a video game soundtrack, if you're looking for something to chill to, I'd recommend Fathoms by Autumn Orange. It's western lofi based on a character from a live d&d campaign, with a unique twist in that there are vocals, but they are taken directly from the character in the Live-streams and edited together to form a somewhat cohesive story. Really fun stuff! I *highly* recommend.

I'd recommend listening to the extra songs for the mod, notably the ones for vanilla bosses. Particularly, the ones by ENNWAY! (Previously known as Turquoise) and PinpinNeon. They're both INCREDIBLY good, and the latter actually has one of their themes as a temporary track in the actual mod- Inferior Fabrications, that is. I should also mention I found your channel through this video, and it's great to see someone who knows nothing about Calamity listen to the soundtrack and just enjoy it. Especially interesting to see someone dissect them in a music sense- I just hoped you'd pick up on more leitmotifs from other songs, because they are absolutely everywhere. Can't complain too much though, I got an excuse to listen to Fly of Beelzebub again!
